[Shu] (Lycium chinense, Chinese Boxthorn): Pungent and cold in nature. It primarily treats heat within the skin and flesh of the body. It expels pathogenic factors and stops enuresis. It can be prepared as a decoction for bathing. It grows in valleys and fields; hence its location is referred to as "Gu Qiu Xu" (Old Ruins).
Also known as "Ju Gu" (Giant Bone). It attaches itself to grow in desolate ruins. Its fruits always appear in pairs, and its stem nodes are hollow and sparse. It contrasts with the thorny Lycium and the pod-bearing Euonymus. After three fumigations and three baths, the skin becomes white and delicate like ice and snow.
Famous physicians state: Another name is "Ju Gu". Zhang Wang's poem reads: "Few human traces in the desolate ruins." Su Gong states: Its fruits ripen in the eighth and ninth lunar months and must appear in pairs. Zhang Xian's poem reads: "For eternity, morning and dusk, they stand in pairs." Li Dangzhi states: Another name is "Kong Shu" (Hollow Sparse). The bark is white and hollow inside, with frequent nodes. Ma Zhi states: It resembles Lycium but has thorns, whereas Lycium does not. Su Gong states: Euonymus is also called "Kong Shu," and its fruits have pods. Famous physicians state: It removes heat from the stomach and can be used as a bathing decoction. *Guoyu* records: "Three fumigations and three baths." *Zhuangzi* describes: "The skin is like ice and snow."
[Shu Li] (Rhamnus davurica, Daurian Buckthorn): Treats alternating chills and fever, scrofula, and sores. It grows in fields.
It constructs crow's nests; rats climb the trees to swallow its fruits. Branches hang down at the angles; irregular branches cling to one another. The purple pulp is rich; the green juice coagulates like dyed silk. It shares the name with Catalpa, but the North Mountain excels in it. Su Song states: This is the same as "Wu Chao Zi" (Crow Nest Seed). Gao Qi's poem says: "Forests startled by rats climbing trees." Kou Zongshi states: The fruits grow on all four sides of the branches; they are green when raw and purple when ripe. Even after leaves fall in autumn, the fruits remain on the branches. Li Shizhen states: Its fruits attach to the branches like ears of grain. People pick the tender leaves, extract the juice, and use it to dye things green. Famous physicians state: Another name is "Shu Zi". *Shuowen Jiezi* mentions "Shu Zi". *Shijing* mentions "There is a Shu in the North Mountain". Li Shizhen states: Qingchun (Euonymus alatus) is also called Shu Zi, which is different from this plant.
[Yao Shi Gen] (Root of Dioscorea or similar tuberous root, contextually likely referring to a specific medicinal root described here, often associated with *Dioscorea* species or similar vines in ancient texts, literally "Medicine Real Root"): Pungent and warm in nature. It treats pathogenic factors, various bi syndromes causing pain and soreness. It reconnects severed tendons and bones, and tonifies the marrow. Another name is "Lian Mu" (Connected Tree). It grows in valleys.
Among various medicinal seeds, this tree is named "Lian" (Connected). Flowers bloom in spring, while fruits mature uniquely in autumn. What was severed is reconnected; what was deficient is made full. It eliminates gu toxicity and zhu diseases, and also resolves snake venom entanglement.
*Han Shu · Yi Wen Zhi* mentions: "The words of the hundred schools are chaotic and confused." Su Song states: Huang Yao Zi (Yellow Medicine Root) comes from Lingnan; those from Qinzhou are called Hong Yao Zi (Red Medicine Root); those from Shizhou are Chi Yao Zi (Red Medicine Root). They bloom white flowers in July. Su Gong states: Ku Yao Zi (Bitter Medicine Root) comes from Kaizhou, and they are all similar. Li Shizhen states: Although Yao Shi Zi resembles Huang Yao Zi and Ku Yao Zi, there are slight differences. These two medicines do not produce fruit; this one is the fruit of a tree. *Liji Shu* states: "What is broken cannot be renewed." *Lunheng* states: "One does not mind deficiency to seek fullness." Su Gong states: It removes gu toxicity and snake venom.
