[Shi Liu Huang (Stibnite / Realgar? Note: Text says "Shi Liu Huang" which usually refers to Sulfur, but context mentions "Yang Hou" and "Fan Jing". In ancient texts, Shi Liu Huang often refers to native sulfur or stibnite. Given "acid warm", "dissolves gold/silver", it aligns with Sulfur. However, "Shi Liu Huang" literally means Stone Yellow Sulfur. Let's stick to the text's implication of Sulfur/Mineral.)]
Taste is sour, nature is warm. It primarily treats erosion and ulceration of the female yin (vagina), carbuncles, hemorrhoids, and foul blood. It can strengthen bones and tendons, and treat alopecia capitis (head hair loss). It can melt gold, silver, copper, iron, and other strange substances. It grows in valleys.
It is revered as Yang Hou (Lord of Waves/Sun), the essence of alum stones, possessing a condensing and gathering property; it can make scorched earth solidify and harden, like water flowing from hot springs. Its potency is fierce, referred to as "Huang Ya" (Yellow Sprout), emitting purple flames when burning. After the Golden Liquid Elixir is formed, it must be inspected according to the season.
Ge Hong said: Among the four types of yellow minerals, Yang Hou is the most respected. Wu Pu said: This is the liquid of alum-water stone that produces purple flames when burned. Yi Zhu explains: "Zheng" means the state of gathering closely. The Biography in Wei Shu records: Yueban State is in the southern border, where there is a volcano. The land beside the mountain is all scorched black, melting and flowing for dozens of li before solidifying into a hard mass; this is Shi Liu Huang. Bao Wu Zhi records: Any spring containing Shi Liu Huang is a hot spring. Zhao Dongxi's fu writes: Chiseling through connected rocks to release the surging water. Li Shizhen said: Its fierce toxicity makes it the general among seventy-two stone minerals. Lay practitioners call it Yang Hou, also Huang Ya. Bo Zhai Bian records: Golden Liquid Elixir is refined from flowing yellow sulfur. It is a pure yang substance, suitable for those with chronic cold conditions. Nowadays, many people take it during the Summer Solstice, which instead causes great harm. The History of Yuan records: Cao Jian had proper methods for inspection and examination.
[Ci Huang (Orpiment)]
Taste is pungent, nature is neutral. It primarily treats malignant sores, scabies and tinea on the scalp due to alopecia, poisonous insects and lice, body itching, evil qi, and various toxins. Long-term consumption of refined Ci Huang can lighten the body, prolong life, and prevent aging. It grows in valleys.
It co-habits with Xiong Huang (Realgar) in the same mountain, located on the north side of Wudu Mountain. It is a variant of tin, fumigating and refining precious metals, assisting the virtue of wifely submission, avoiding invasion by groups underground. Its color is pure yellow without impurities, symbolizing the deep layers of Earth's virtue.
Famous physicians said: Ci Huang grows in the same mountain as Xiong Huang in Wudu. On the shady side of the mountain where there is gold, the essence of gold fumigates to produce Ci Huang. The Biography in Book of Later Han quotes Zhao Wen saying: How can one lie low like Ci Huang? Dan Fang Jian Yuan records: Ci Huang transforms into tin. The Records of the Grand Historian records: Lian Tin is produced in Changsha. Tao Hongjing said: Immortal classics do not prescribe single administration. It is only combined with a small amount of Xiong Huang and refined into elixir. Tu Su Zhi Nan records: Yang stones,结 (knot/form) after five hundred years apart. Creation has the way of husband and wife, hence called Yin (Female) and Yang (Male). Lei Xiao's Lun records: When processing, do not let women, chickens, dogs, or places of filth touch it. Zhong Hui's fu writes: Pure yellow without mixture. Han Baosheng said: Ci Huang follows the nature of Earth, hence its yellow color. Shui Jing Zhu records: The mountain peaks are layered and deep.
