Snow-like whiteness pours into the zhi (wine vessel); warm winds blow across. Round brains contain buds; straight ridges are distinct. Yellow brilliance resembles soft gold; red vibrancy dyes white silk. Branches hook like wooden halberds; similar formulas attach to each other.
Jiang Meibian's poem says: "The pure and clear dharmakaya is like snow whiteness." Li Shizhen states: "Zhi is a wine vessel; Zhi Zi resembles it." Shen Zhou's poem says: "Warm winds blow to form seeds." The *Lei Gong Pao Zhi Lun* indicates that when using this herb, those resembling bird brains are superior. Su Song says: Thin-skinned, round, and small, with seven to nine distinct ridges are best. Sima Xiangru's fu says: "Xianzhi is yellow and bright." Li Gao states: The *Dan Shu* says Zhi Zi is like soft gold. Li Shangyin's poem says: "Nearby vibrant red accompanies soft green." The *Qun Fang Pu* records: The fruit resembles Che Zi (Terminalia chebula), with deep red kernels inside, which can be used to dye fabric. The *Ming Yi Bie Lu* calls it "Mu Ji" (Wooden Halberd), growing in mountains, with leaves like Zhi Zi, named but not yet widely used. The *Xin Lun* mentions coiled roots and hooked branches. Lu Ji's commentary discusses how similar formulas attach by category.
