[Genkwa / Gelsemium]
Pungent, warm. Primarily treats metal wounds and breast swelling/pain. Treats sudden contraction of evil wind. Treats cough with rebellious qi. Treats edema. Kills ghost-related diseases (Guizhu) and gu poison. Also known as Yege (Wild Ginger). Grows in mountains and valleys.

Chen Cangqi stated: Water spinach crushed into juice resolves the toxicity of Wild Ginger. Li Shizhen stated: People in Yunnan call it Fire Torch Flower, indicating its nature is hot like fire. Quoting Dongfang Shuo's text: "Blowing the scorching heat of heavenly fire." Wu Pu stated: The stem is red like an arrow. Su Gong stated: It grows as a vine, similar to white-flowered vines. Quoting Su Shunqin's poem: "Barbarian workers have dry, split lips." Quoting *Strategies of the Warring States*: "Nie Zheng gouged out his eyes and slaughtered his intestines." Tao Hongjing stated: It hooks the throat and lips, pulling at the intestines. *Wufu Jing* states: Birds cannot gather/perch on it. Su Gong stated: Sheep eat its seedlings and become very fat. Things restrain each other in this manner. *Baowu Zhi* states: People believe Genkwa kills humans but do not believe Polygonatum benefits longevity; is this not confusing? Li Shizhen stated: This refers to the contrast between the beauty and ugliness of these two herbs. Tao Hongjing, Lei Xiao, and Han Baosheng were mistaken in saying they are similar.
