[Qinglang]

Precious treasures originate from the northwest. Its qi responds to yin and yang. Red hues float like an iron net; blue brilliance shines like the Kunlun Mountains. Pearls are not merely the charm of rivers and streams; jade is admired for its concealment in abysses. Offered as a treasure of Chu, it holds weight in the etiquette of the East.
The *Erya* records: Among the beauties of the northwest are the Linlang of the Kunlun Ruins. The *Gengxin Yuce* states that it grows within the cliffs of the South Sea, formed naturally by responding to the qi of yin and yang. Su Song stated: To harvest coral, one first sinks an iron net into the water bottom, through which Lang grows. It is bright and clear like the color of pearls, with a shape resembling densely planted vegetation. The *Liezi* records: Trees bearing pearls grow in clusters. Li Shizhen stated: Those growing in water are corals; those growing on mountains are Lang, which can be ground into beads, hence the name "Pearl." Lu Ji's fu says: Rivers possess charm because they harbor pearls. Zhuangzi said: Hide pearls in the abyss. Sprouting laterally from the mother root, accumulating during severe winter. The shape sits squarely; milk-like protrusions hang down, facilitating selection and harvesting. When medicinal power is weak, it shrinks into a fist-like form, growing sideways connected by veins. Many taboos and aversions exist; prayer to deities is often sought for acquisition.
Han Baosheng stated: Those growing laterally from Aconitum carmichaelii (Wutou) like scattered taro are called Fuzi. Tao Hongjing stated: Harvested in winter. Yang Tianhui recorded: The shape of Fuzi, with a squatting posture, regular nodes, and few angles, is superior; those with many nodes and mouse-milk-like protrusions are inferior. Harvested in the seventh month, called "Dry Water," shriveled and small, indicating immaturity.
