[Lu Huo]
Taste is bitter, nature is neutral. It governs gu poison (parasitic disease). It treats lower abdominal and lumbar pain in women accompanied by depression and dissatisfaction. It treats intestinal abscesses, scrofula, and qi-related ulcers. It grows in mountain valleys.
It grows in the fields where grain is cultivated. Its name is associated with Puerariae Radix (Ge Gen). The vines spread messily like vetches. The pods are textured like Sichuan pepper. The flowers are yellow with a moist fragrance, and the purple pollen drifts with the wind. It attracts deer to feed on it and can be widely used for cooking and seasoning.
(The character "Wan" is pronounced as "Wan".)
Tao Hongjing stated: One name for Puerariae Radix (Ge Gen) seedling is Lu Huo. Su Gong stated: The seedlings resemble vetches but have long trailing vines. Agricultural books record: Larger vetches are called Huai Dou. The commentary of Erya states: The leaves resemble soybean leaves, spreading and rooting, with yellow roots that have an aroma. Li Shizhen stated: It grows mostly in wheat fields, blooming pale pink-purple flowers in March, bearing small pods. Its seeds are as large as peppercorns, black in color, and edible both raw and cooked. Bean leaves are called "Huo"; because deer like to eat them, it got this name. Lu You's poem: "The fragrance of fermented bean paste and white salt allows for self-seasoning."
