Zhang Taiqing once suffered from dim vision (Mu An). Physicians in the capital advised him to moxa the Liver meridian points, which resulted in complete blindness. He then obtained this prescription, took it, and his vision cleared. A man suffering from internal cataracts (Nei Zhang) found medical treatment ineffective, so I gave him the remaining dosage. One night, he told his family by lamplight: "I happened to see something just now, as if seeing fire through a crack in a door." At dawn, upon examination, the opacity membrane in his eye had cracked like a thread. Zhang stated that this medicine is most effective and should not be given away casually. If neglected, it will be ineffective. I felt my understanding was limited and wished to disseminate this formula widely.
Another Prescription
Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Inulae Flos (Xuanjinhua), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng) (each 0.5 liang), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Broussonetiae Folium (Zhuye), Chrysanthemi Flos (Ganjuhua), Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu - soaked in rice wash water and peeled), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhishi), Bombyx Batryticatus (Chantui), Equiseti Herba (Muzei), Mori Folium (Sangye) (harvested in August, dried in shade, each 1 liang).
Pound the above herbs in a wooden mortar into powder. Mix with clear tea liquor and take 2 qian. Take once after breakfast, once after dinner, and once before bed. Also treats red eye (Chi Yan). Avoid wet noodles and alcohol. Zhuye must be from non-fruiting branches (young leaves); others are unusable. Otherwise, all medicines will be ineffective. During preparation, do not use fire roasting or contact iron vessels. Observing this prescription, the selection of non-fruiting Zhuye is crucial because Yin and Yang must match. Fruit-bearing plants represent Yang, while leaf-picking from non-fruiting plants represents Yin. Therefore, if the true non-fruiting leaves are not used, all medicines will fail.
Juhua San (Chrysanthemum Powder) Treats eye pain caused by wind-toxic heat rising from the Kidney and Liver.
Chrysanthemi Flos (Ganjuhua), Arctii Fructus (Niubangzi - stir-fried until ripe, each 8 liang), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng) (3 liang), Tribuli Fructus (Bajili - thorns removed, 1 liang), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) (1 liang).
Grind into fine powder. Take 2 qian each time, mixed with boiled water. Take after meals and before bed.
The *Suwen* states: Prolonged viewing damages Blood. Blood is governed by the Liver. Thus, diligent writing damages the Liver, leading to blurred vision. When the Liver is damaged, it generates internal wind-heat, which rises to the eyes, worsening the blurriness. One cannot solely rely on tonifying medicines; instead, one must use medicines that nourish blood, calm the Liver, and brighten the eyes.
Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill)
Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Cassiae Semen (Juemingzi) (each 1 liang), Myrrha (Moyao), Chrysanthemi Flos (Ganjuhua), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guixin), Guangming Cinnabar (Guangming Zhusha) (each 0.5 liang), Dried Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Ganshudihuang) (1.5 liang).
Grind into fine powder. Form pills with refined honey, sized like paulownia seeds. Take 30 pills each time with boiled water. Take after meals, three times daily.
The hardship of reading indeed damages the Liver and eyes. Fan Ning of the Jin Dynasty suffered from severe eye pain and sought a prescription from Zhang Zhan. Zhang Zhan joked: "In ancient times, Song Yangzi Shao acquired this technique and taught it to Lu Dongmen Bo, who passed it to Zuo Qiuming, and it was transmitted generation to generation, reaching Du Zixia of the Han Dynasty and Zuo Taichong of the Jin Dynasty. All these sages suffered from eye diseases and received this prescription." The usage involves: 1. Reducing reading, 2. Reducing mental exertion, 3. Focusing on inner vision, 4. Simplifying external observation, 5. Rising early and sleeping late (referring to regular作息), 6. Sleeping early at night. These six practices are 'cooked' by divine fire and steamed by qi, stored in the chest, and after seven days, applied to the 'square inch' (heart/mind). Practicing for a shichen (two hours) allows one to count eyelashes up close and see beyond a chi stick from afar. Long-term continuous use enables seeing beyond walls. This not only brightens the eyes but also prolongs life. If practiced sincerely, it is not mockery but a miraculous prescription.

Grind into fine powder. Form wax pills sized like millet grains. Insert one pill into the eye before sleep. Replace with a new pill every shichen (two hours).
Xun Muzhong recently told me: There was a patient who saw one object as two (diplopia). Physicians attributed it to excess Liver Qi causing double vision and prescribed Liver-tonifying medicines, but they were ineffective. What disease is this? I said: Sun Simiao stated: The optic nerve connects upward to the brain and exits posteriorly from the neck. Pathogenic factors strike the neck. If the body is deficient, the pathogen penetrates deeply, following the optic nerve into the brain. Once in the brain, it causes rotation, leading to tension in the optic nerve. Tension causes vertigo and dizziness. If pathogens strike the eyeball directly, misalignment occurs, causing the eyeball to scatter. Scattering leads to diplopia, hence seeing two objects. Prescribe medicines that expel wind and enter the brain, and the condition will heal.
