This text describes the etiology, symptoms, and treatment methods for three types of external eye obstructions.
First Condition:
When this eye disease first occurs, it is all due to accumulated heat in the Spleen and Stomach, combined with wind pathogens from the brain rushing into the eyelids. Flesh-like growths appear in the eyelids, initially small as hemp seeds, and gradually enlarge over years to resemble plums or peaches. If it obscures the pupil, it forms a nebula (Yi).
Treatment involves pricking the interior to release blood, then using a scalpel to wash away stagnant blood. Taking Xixin Tang (Asarum Decoction) and Moyi San (Nebula-Grinding Powder) yields effective results.
Poem says:
Eyelid skin and flesh夹杂 gelatinous form, gradually growing like plum and peach shapes.
After pricking open the interior and pus flowing out, one must still take medicine to restore brightness.
Or if wind-heat aggravates the condition, tearing should occur with nebula formation.
Cutting with a Pi needle (Bichuan) treats it like wind-toxic eye; thorough grinding and dissolving will naturally correspond.
Xixin Tang (Asarum Decoction):
Asari Radix (Xixin), Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Poria (Fuling), Plantaginis Semen (Cheqianzi), Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi), Black Ginseng (Heishen), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Lycii Cortex (Digupi) (each 1.5 liang).
The above are ground into powder. Use one cup of water, one qian of powder, decoct until half a cup remains. Strain and take warm after meals.
Moyi San (Nebula-Grinding Powder):
Borneolum Syntheticum (Longnao), Azurite (Zengqing), Rock Crystal (Shuijing) (each 1 liang), Pearl Powder (Zhenzhu Mo), Amber (Hupo) (each 1 fen).
The above are pounded and sifted into fine powder. Apply into the eyes at night for immediate effect.
Second Condition:
When this eye disease first occurs, there is slight dizziness and mental cloudiness, limbs feel fatigued, and the Five Zang organs accumulate wind qi and toxic stagnation, causing sores to emerge in the eyes. Some flow clear saliva, all resulting from brain dysfunction. Although painless, darkness gradually increases; timely tonification and treatment are essential. Taking Zhifeng Huangtang (Wind-Treating Yellow Decoction) leads to recovery.
Poem says:
Why do eyes suffer fullness? Heat and wind linger in the eyelids.
Head accumulation becomes pus, or flows saliva sticky and green.
Though painless and without nebula, progressive sore enlargement causes anxiety.
Huangxiang Dan Wan and powders, Aloe vera paste steamed for eye peace.
If conditions persist over years, the black pearl gradually falls, causing alarm.
Zhifeng Huangtang (Wind-Treating Yellow Decoction):
Astragali Radix (Huangqi) (1.5 liang), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Polygalae Radix (Yuanzhi), Lycii Cortex (Digupi), Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Poria (Fuling), Rheismi Radix (Dahuang) (each 1 liang), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu) (2 liang).
The above are ground into powder. Use one cup of water, one qian of powder, decoct until half a cup remains. Strain and take warm.
Third Condition:
When this eye disease first occurs, sudden pain arises, making sitting and lying uncomfortable, eyes are red, dry, and tearing, sensitive to light and bright environments. This is all due to latent heat in the Liver and insufficient Gallbladder qi in the diaphragm, causing the pupil to protrude like a black bead, resembling a plum or peach. This is Crab Eye Syndrome (Xiejing). Urgent medication is required; acupuncture, hooking, cutting, moxibustion, and cauterization are contraindicated to avoid damaging the eye. It is suitable to take Xiegan Tang (Liver-Draining Decoction), Budan Wan (Gallbladder-Tonifying Pill), and Zhenshen Jueming Wan (Kidney-Supplementing Clear-Eye Pill) for immediate recovery.
Poem says:
Suddenly a bean-sized mass emerges from the black pearl, Crab Eye cries out because of this.
This state must be due to extreme pain, clarity lost, nebula hardest to remove.
Hooks, membranes, needles, and scalpels must not be used; applying to painful eyes ruins them instantly.
Only cool medicines and tonics are suitable; Jueming pills and powders are highly appropriate.
Heat in the Liver returns and dissipates; acupuncture, topical application, and massage are altogether unnecessary.
Xiegan Tang (Liver-Draining Decoction):
Black Ginseng (Heishen), Lycii Cortex (Digupi), Plantaginis Semen (Cheqianzi), Mirabilitum (Mangxiao) (each 1 liang), Rheismi Radix (Dahuang), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu) (each 1.5 liang), Leonuri Fructus (Chongweizi) (2 liang).
The above are ground into powder. Use one cup of water, one qian of powder, decoct until half a cup remains. Strain and take warm on an empty stomach.
Budan Wan (Gallbladder-Tonifying Pill):
Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Asari Radix (Xixin) (each 1.5 liang), Polygalae Radix (Yuanzhi), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Poria (Fuling), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao) (each 1 liang).
The above are ground into powder, mixed with refined honey to make pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take ten pills with tea on an empty stomach.
Zhenshen Jueming Wan (Kidney-Supplementing Clear-Eye Pill):
Haliotidis Concha (Shijueming), Cuscutae Semen (Tusizi), Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi) (each 1 liang), Asari Radix (Xixin), Dioscoreae Rhizoma Dryum (Ganshan Yao), Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Gandihuang), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu) (each 1.5 liang).
The above are ground into powder, mixed with refined honey to make pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take ten pills with tea on an empty stomach.
