When the eye disease first occurs, there may be redness and ulceration. Gradually, a nebula (corneal opacity) forms and invades the cornea. Once it covers the pupil, vision is lost. The physician examines carefully; if the center of the nebula is not red or yellow, some light perception remains. It is appropriate to employ hook-cutting, moxibustion/cauterization, and cauterizing techniques. Subsequently, apply Lan Yi San (Rotten Nebula Powder) topically and administer Xi Xin San (Asarum Powder) orally.
The poem states:
After other illnesses affect the eyes, brightness gradually fades.
Initially, a thin membrane seems to appear; after a year, the nebula thickens and forms.
It spreads across the black part of the eye; over time, redness and yellowness arise.
Burn copper chopsticks for cauterization; apply with gentle intent and light hands.
Lan Yi San (Rotten Nebula Powder)
Cinnabar (Zhusha), Concha Argo (Shijueming), Pearl Powder (Zhenzhu Mo) (each 0.5 liang); Azurite (Cengqing), Borax (Sha), Borneolum Syntheticum (Longnao) (each 1 fen).
Pulverize these ingredients finely. Apply a small amount dry into the eye for immediate effect.
Xi Xin San (Asarum Powder)
Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin), Semen Ecliptae (Chongweizi) (each 2 liang); Panax Notoginseng Radix (Heishen), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang) (each 1 liang); Plantaginis Semen (Cheqianzi) (1.5 liang).
Grind into powder. Take one qian of powder with one cup of water, decoct until reduced to half a cup. Strain and take warm after meals.
When this eye condition first arises, it is due to deficiency and exhaustion of the five zang organs, allowing wind-heat pathogens to rush into the liver and diaphragm region, gradually forming a nebula. The nebula may grow from above downwards or from below upwards, termed "Shun Zhang" (Smooth Obstruction) or "Ni Zhang" (Reverse Obstruction). Hook-cutting, cauterization, and cauterizing techniques are also employed to remove the membrane and its halo. Thereafter, it is appropriate to administer Bu Lao Ren Shen Wan (Tonify Deficiency Ginseng Pill) and Zhi Mu Yin Zi (Anemarrhena Decoction) for immediate effect.
The poem states:
Nebulae in the eyes require distinguishing between smooth and reverse growth.
Growth from below upwards is reverse; even famous doctors find treatment slow.
Delaying through days and months, medicines cure but recurrence happens.
Cauterization combined with hook-cutting makes topical powders suitable.
Growth from below is smooth; treatment methods should follow suit.
Recovery is rapid unlike reverse cases; do not neglect precautions.
Bu Lao Ren Shen Wan (Tonify Deficiency Ginseng Pill)
Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Poria (Fuling), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Shengdihuang - *Note: Text says Gan Dihuang, usually implies Prepared Rehmannia in tonics, but literal is Dried Rehmannia*), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang), Cinnamon Twig (Guixin), Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shanyao), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin) (each 1 liang).
Grind into powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take ten pills on an empty stomach with tea.
Zhi Mu Yin Zi (Anemarrhena Decoction)
Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu), Semen Ecliptae (Chongweizi), Plantaginis Semen (Cheqianzi) (each 2 liang); Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang), Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi) (each 1 liang).
Grind into powder. Take one qian of powder with one cup of water, decoct until reduced to half a cup. Strain and take warm after meals.
