When Yang essence is discharged, Yin blood can retain it; the essence forms the offspring, and the blood forms the uterine sac, thus conception is achieved. Currently, women's infertility is all due to insufficient blood failing to retain the essence. Although the causes of blood deficiency are manifold, one must regulate and tonify Yin blood to ensure no deficiency exists before conception can occur. Quack doctors fail to investigate, uniformly attributing the condition to cold deficiency of the uterus, and administer acrid-hot medicines that cause boiling of Zang-Fu Qi and Blood. Consequently, menstruation turns purple-black, gradually becoming scanty. Initially, appetite increases abruptly, but later bitter taste and dryness in the mouth arise, with various symptoms emerging like swarms of insects; how can conception be achieved? Even if a child is born, they often do not live long.
In men, insufficiency of True Yin fails to nourish Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi), leading to gradual weakness. Symptoms may include alternating deficiency heat, spontaneous sweating, or night sweats; spirit failing to reside within its abode and blood failing to return to its origin; deficiency damaging Yin; spermatorrhea or involuntary urination; fainting due to Qi deficiency; blurred vision and deafness; dry mouth and tongue; or soreness and weakness of the waist and legs. For all such syndromes as internal depletion of essence and marrow, and withering of body fluids, it is appropriate to rapidly tonify the True Yin of the Left Kidney. Zuogui Wan (Left Restoring Pill) is indicated.
Zuogui Wan (Left Restoring Pill)
Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, eight liang, pounded into paste) Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, stir-fried with ginger juice) Gou Qi Zi (Lycii Fructus) Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus, pitted) Lu Jiao Jiao (Cervi Cornu Colla, stir-fried until bubbling) Gui Ban Jiao (Testudinis et Chelonis Carapax et Plastrum Colla, stir-fried until bubbling) Tu Si Zi (Cuscutae Semen, processed, each four liang) Chuan Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, steamed with wine, 90 grams)
Grind the above into powder, form pills with honey the size of paulownia seeds, and take one hundred pills before meals, washed down with light salt water.
If True Yin is lost and deficient fire flares upward, pure Yin and tranquil substances should be used: remove Gou Qi Zi and Lu Jiao Jiao, add Nu Zhen Zi (Ligustri Lucidi Fructus) and Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix), three liang each. If fire scorches Lung Metal causing dryness and frequent coughing, add Bai He (Lilii Bulbus), three liang. For night fever and bone-steaming heat, add Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex), three liang. For difficult and unclear urination, add Fu Ling (Poria), three liang. For dry and hard stools, remove Tu Si Zi and add Rou Cong Rong (Cistanches Herba), three liang. For Qi deficiency, add Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), four liang. For blood deficiency with slight stagnation, add Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), four liang. For soreness and pain of the waist and knees, add Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex, stir-fried with salt water), three liang. For cases where the Zang organs are balanced without fire but Kidney Qi is insufficient, remove Gui Ban Jiao and add Po Gu Zhi (Psoraleae Fructus), three liang, along with Lian Rou (Nelumbinis Semen, heart removed) and Hu Tao Rou (Juglandis Semen, four liang each).
