The child is like a flower bud and calyx, with vitality not yet fully unfolded; just becoming a boy or girl, the Tian Gui (physiological phenomenon referring to menstruation in women or seminal emission in men) has not yet become abundant. Have you ever seen an immature seed serving as good stock, or an underdeveloped silkworm spinning a cocoon? To forcibly expend effort saying "let us wait for another day," but can those whose years are declining wait that long? This is merely sitting idle and losing the opportunity.
When men and women engage in intercourse, ancient methods dictate avoiding Bing-Ding days (Fire days in the Heavenly Stems), as well as the days of the first quarter (Chuxi/Qiba), last day of the month (Hui), and full moon (Wang). However, for those struggling with infertility, it seems one need not be strictly bound by these rules. But if encountering strong winds, heavy rain, thunder, fog, extreme cold or heat, dark skies, solar or lunar eclipses, rainbows, or earthquakes—these are times when Heaven and Earth rage and the Qi of the four seasons is irregular. Violating these causes harm to the male a hundredfold and causes disease in the female. Even if a child is conceived, they will likely be manic, foolish, stupid, mute, deaf, contracted, lame, blind, or squint-eyed, prone to illness and short-lived, unfilial and unkind. This is the first category of things to avoid. Furthermore, under the light of the sun, moon, or stars; within temples or shrines; beside wells, stoves, or latrines; near tombs or coffins; and in places that are deeply yin or dangerous—intercourse should not take place. This is the second category of things to avoid. If one knows to avoid these during intercourse, then virtuous, blessed, wise, and good spirits will descend into the home to conceive, resulting in children with gentle and compliant natures, leading to a flourishing family lineage. They will suffer fewer illnesses and be smart, handsome, and long-lived. If one does not avoid these, then foolish, deceitful, and evil spirits will enter the home to conceive, resulting in children with violent natures, leading to a declining family. They will have physical disabilities and suffer sudden disasters, dying prematurely. The verification of fortune and misfortune is as immediate as an echo or shadow; how can one not be cautious?
When the fetal origin (Tai Yuan) is first formed, it resembles a drop of dew. At this stage, its Qi bag (Tuoyue) lacks foundation, and its root lacks ground. Consolidating it makes it firm; rupturing it causes flow. Therefore, after conception, one must strictly restrain sexual desire to prevent the overflow and loss of fetal Qi. Yet youths indulge their passions, knowing no fear, often relying on strength to avoid exhaustion, or fighting again after ejaculation. At such times, while the hostess wishes for rest, the guest refuses to stop, acting like a madman banging on doors and windows. Looking at her water-like passion and warm heart, would she not open the door and follow the flow? At this moment, falling flowers fly together with pink butterflies, fire dates and cross-pear fruits escape together. Having merged in filth and flowed together, no one knows that pregnancy occurred yesterday and miscarriage today, or conception on the first day of the month and miscarriage on the fifteenth. This type of spontaneous abortion occurring alongside pregnancy leaves no trace. Because obvious childbirth involves a formed fetus, and minor miscarriage is felt, but hidden miscarriage (An Chan) allows the fetus to slip away like water, how would one know? Thus, midwives often lack experience with major deliveries because there are so many minor miscarriages. Those who marry prostitutes often have no offspring because their uteruses are slippery and accustomed to minor miscarriages. I have seen people in the world struggling with infertility; when asked about their sexual function, they say they can fight; when asked about their technique, they say they are proficient; when asked about their state of mind, they complain and sigh, "Everyone else has children, why do I alone have no husband?" Little do they know that what others experience as obvious childbirth, they experience as hidden miscarriage. Additionally, for those who miscarry frequently in the third, fifth, or seventh months of pregnancy, although this is common among weak women, it is most often caused by unrestrained sexual desire damaging the mother's Qi. Therefore, those who rely on excessive strength and bravery often have no children, due to mutual destruction between strength and weakness; those who indulge without restraint often remain infertile, due to stealing and damaging the Qi of the fetal origin. Is this entirely the fault of women? Those seeking heirs should contemplate potential disasters and prevent them in advance, and then perhaps success can be achieved.
