(The Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine belongs to the Fu organs)
The Small Intestine is the Official of Reception and Transformation, responsible for processing food and separating clear from turbid. Its upper orifice connects to the lower orifice of the Stomach, through which food and drink enter. Its lower orifice connects to the upper orifice of the Large Intestine. Here, clear and turbid substances are separated, allowing fluids to flow into the Bladder and waste matter to flow into the Large Intestine. It is the only Fu organ that possesses this function of discrimination. Therefore, it has an exterior-interior relationship with the Heart. Its pulse is associated with the Bladder and located at the left Chi position. The Small Intestine has no Exterior syndromes; all its conditions belong to the Interior.
Small Intestine Deficiency: The left Chi pulse must be fine and soft. Symptoms include dark and scanty urination and lower back pain.
Dark and scanty urination indicates that Water fails to control Fire. The primary formula is Shengdi Huang Tang (Rehmannia Root Decoction).
Lower back pain indicates insufficiency of Kidney Water. The primary formula is Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill).
Small Intestine Excess: The left Chi pulse must be surging and wiry. Symptoms include Xiao Chang Qi (Small Intestine Qi stagnation) and Jiao Chang (Crossed Intestines syndrome).
"Xiao Chang Qi" refers to Qi stagnation in the Lower Jiao, causing twisting pain below the umbilicus, which feels relieved after passing gas. The primary formula is Juhe Wan (Tangerine Seed Pill).
"Jiao Chang" refers to the reversal of Yin and Yang, resulting in the confusion of functions between the Large and Small Intestines. The primary formula is Wu Ling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria).
Small Intestine Cold: The left Chi pulse must be slow. Symptoms include cough and passing gas.
Cough accompanied by passing gas is considered "Small Intestine Cough." The primary formula is Zhisou San (Stop Cough Powder) added with Radix Paeoniae Alba (Shaoyao).
Small Intestine Heat: The left Chi pulse must be rapid. Symptoms include dysuria and scanty urine.
Dysuria and scanty urine indicate damp-heat congestion. The primary formula is Daochi San (Guide Out Redness Powder).
