Due to epidemic pathogenic factors invading the three Yang meridians, swelling occurs in both the head and eyes. Invasion of the Taiyang meridian manifests as redness and swelling of the vertex, occiput, and neck; Jingfang Baidu San (Astragalus and Saposhnikovia Decoction) with Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) and Bencao (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) is appropriate. Invasion of the Yangming meridian manifests as swelling of the nose, forehead, and face, inability to open the eyes, panting, and dry mouth; Puji Xiaodu Yin (Great Relief Detoxification Decoction) is appropriate. If there is internal excess heat, Fengtang Tongsheng San (Saposhnikovia and Gardenia Powder for Unblocking the Interior) may be taken alternately. Invasion of the Shaoyang meridian manifests as redness and swelling above, below, before, and behind the ears, as well as at the temporal angles, accompanied by alternating chills and fever and hypochondriac pain; Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) with heat-clearing and detoxifying herbs is appropriate. If there is severe head and facial swelling, fever, and bone pain, Chonghe Tang or Dongmayang Tang may be used; once sweating occurs, the swelling subsides.
Epidemic pathogenic factors invading the Shaoyang meridian cause simultaneous swelling of the neck, nape, and parotid regions, resembling a frog (Xiamu), hence the name. It is appropriate to use wind-dispelling and heat-clearing herbs. Baiku San is preferred, with doubled Qianghuo, plus Jiu Chao Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix fried with wine) and Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma). Dosages should be adjusted according to the condition; drastic purgative drugs should not be used vigorously. Although Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) and Dahuang are used for internal excess, they must be sipped slowly. If high fever and maniacal symptoms occur, Chengqi Tang (Gastrointestinal Draining Decoction) or Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) may be used, or the Shuizi Fa (Water Immersion Method) may be applied depending on severity.
Puji Xiaodu Yinzi: Suitable for the initial stage of plague, characterized by aversion to cold and high fever, gradual swelling of the head and face, and throat obstruction. Taking this formula leads to recovery.
Huanglian (Scutellariae Radix, wine-fried) and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, wine-fried), each 5 qian; Renshen (Ginseng Radix), 3 qian (optional); Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, pith removed); Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma); Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), each 2 qian; Mabo (Stemonitis Rhizoma); Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus); Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus); Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix); Banlangen (Isatidis Radix), each 1 qian; Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), 8 fen; Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma); Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus), each 7 fen.
Grind into powder. Half is mixed with water and taken slowly while lying down; the other half is made into honey pills for sucking. Alternatively, Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) may be added and decocted in water. If constipation occurs, Jiuzhu Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma boiled with wine), 1-2 qian, is added to promote bowel movement. For headache, bone pain, and fever, diaphoresis should be induced first.
Erhuang Tang: Treats Datouwen (Big Head Plague).
Huanglian (Scutellariae Radix) and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), both wine-fried; Sheng Gancao (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), equal parts.
Grind into powder. Take 5 qian per dose, decoct in water, and sip slowly. If heat persists, add Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus) and Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas). Add guiding herbs: Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) and Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) for Taiyang; Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) for Yangming; Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) for Shaoyang. For thirst, add Gualougen (Trichosanthis Radix); for dry mouth, Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix); for body ache, Qianghuo, Fangfeng, and Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix).
Shuizi Fa (Water Immersion Method): Treats extreme internal and external heat (method described in Shanghan Lun).
Jianbian Fang (Simple Formula): Treats plague heat. For those with intense thirst desiring water, grind earthworm mud and mix with fresh well water for drinking.
Another formula: Grind Wancansa (Bombyx Batryticatus residue), filter the juice with water, and drink.
Another formula: Bath in decoction of peach branches and leaves growing towards the east, then sit wrapped in mats to induce sweating.
Another formula: Burn Zhen Jiangxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum) to dispel evil; children may wear it.
Another formula: Place Chi Xiaodou (Vigna Angularis Seed) in a bag and put it in a well for three days. Take it out, stand facing east, and swallow with water. Men take 30 grains, women take 20 grains. The whole family takes it to avoid plague infection.
Plague Mantra (also treats evil diseases; abstain from sexual activity, meat, and alcohol):
Take one jujube and chant: "Huabiao Zhu" (Ornamental Pillar of Hua), seven times. Inhale air facing the Tiangang star and blow onto the jujube. Let the patient chew and swallow with water. These three characters are the ancestral names of ghosts.
Xuansheng Piwen Dan (Confucius's Plague-Dispelling Pill, used by Confucius's descendants for over sixty generations): On the morning of the 24th day of the twelfth lunar month, collect the first draw of well water ("Jinghua Shui"). Soak Rushen (Frankincense) in it until the early morning of New Year's Day, keeping it warm. Everyone drinks the Rushen-infused water, swallowing a small bean-sized piece of frankincense, ensuring immunity from seasonal epidemics for one year.
Wuwen Dan (Five Plagues Pill): Huanglian (Scutellariae Radix), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Zisu (Perillae Folium), Gancao Shao (Tip of Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
Grind these seven ingredients into powder. Prepare a paste by boiling three times the amount of Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) in water. Mix the powder with the paste to form pills the size of chicken eggs. Coat with Zhusha (Cinnabar) and Xionghuang (Realgar), and apply gold leaf. One pill is dissolved in seven bowls of spring water, sufficient for seven people. In different years, the sovereign herb changes: Huangqin in Yi-Geng years; Shanzhi in Ding-Ren years; Huangbai in Bing-Xin years; Huanglian in Wu-Gui years. In Jia-Ji years, Gancao is the sovereign herb, doubled in quantity, while others are halved.
Jizi Qing Yin (Chicken Egg White Drink): Treats febrile disease. Used when high fever peaks around the fifth or sixth day, accompanied by delirium and restlessness.
Two chicken eggs (take the white); Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas), finely ground; Ruan Shigao (Soft Gypsum Fibrosum), finely ground, each 2 qian.
First, dissolve Mangxiao powder in fresh well water, then add the egg white, stir well, and divide into two doses.
