Cold at the tips of the five fingers indicates *Jing Feng* (Wind-Convulsion), which is difficult to withstand.
If the middle finger is hot, it is definitely *Shang Han* (Cold Damage).
If only the middle finger is cold alone, one must refer to the syndromes of *Ma Dou* (Smallpox and Measles) for reference.
Observe the left hand for males and the right hand for females clearly and carefully.
For children over three years old, the physician uses the middle finger to roll and press at the *Cun*, *Guan*, and *Chi* pulse positions, examining the three sections. Six or seven beats per respiration is the normal pulse. An increase in beats indicates Heat; a decrease indicates Cold.
Floating (*Fu*) pulse indicates Wind pathogen; Surging (*Hong*) pulse indicates Excess Heat; Rapid (*Shu*) pulse indicates frequent fright; Slow (*Chi*) pulse indicates Deficiency; Floating and Surging indicate Wind-Heat; Deep and Solid indicate Food Stagnation.
Floating and Tight with no sweat indicates *Shang Han*; Floating and Relaxed with sweat indicates *Shang Feng* (Wind Strike).
Deep and Tight indicates abdominal pain; Wiry and Tight indicates rapid breathing; Tight and Urgent indicates *Dou Zhen* (Pox/Rash); Firm and Solid indicates Wind Epilepsy; Empty and Soft indicates Slow Convulsion; Soft and Fine indicates *Gan Chong* (Malnutrition due to parasites); Deep, Firm and Solid indicates constipation; Large and Hollow indicates blood in stool; Unequal pulse size is an ominous sign. Two or three beats per respiration indicates collapse of vital energy; ten-plus beats indicates a death pulse.
Keep the back warm: The classics state that on both sides below the third thoracic vertebra are the *Fei Shu* (Lung Shu acupoints). If Wind-Cold damages this area, it causes fever, cough, phlegm-wheezing, vomiting, etc.
Keep the abdomen warm: The abdomen is the Stomach. If cold, it cannot rot and ripen grain and food, leading to borborygmus, abdominal pain, diarrhea, etc.
Keep the feet warm: The classics state that the feet are governed by the Yangming Stomach Meridian, moreover, cold rises from the ground. This leads to *Shang Han* fever, cold accumulation, etc.
Keep the head cool: The classics state that the head is the convergence of the six Yang meridians; the head and face are the essence of the five zang organs. The head is the sea of marrow; if too hot, marrow overflows and sweat leaks, causing swelling of the cranial fontanelle, head sores, and eye diseases.
Keep the heart and chest cool: The Heart belongs to Bing Fire. If externally affected by guest heat, both interior and exterior become hot. Mild cases cause dry mouth and red face; severe cases cause night crying and startle/jumping.
Spirit not fully formed: Suddenly seeing unusual objects, unfamiliar people, animals like chickens, dogs, cattle, horses, or playing and shouting can easily lead to Fright disorders. It is suitable to take medicines that calm the heart and spirit and nourish the body. Stop medication when the illness resolves. Do not overuse Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis), Zhusha (Cinnabar), Jin Yin (Gold/Silver), Bingpian (Borneol), and Shexiang (Musk), lest they cause Cold disorders.
Vomiting, diarrhea, and slow convulsion: When the Spleen and Stomach are solid, Qi and Blood flow smoothly, and the body is healthy. In infants' *Bian Zheng* (physiological growth changes), if mistakenly treated as external pathogens and given diaphoretic medicines; or due to food stagnation, overusing purgatives; or due to imbalance of cold and heat damaging the Spleen and Stomach, causing prolonged vomiting and diarrhea. Once the Spleen Earth is deficient, Liver Wood overacts upon it, resulting in tendon spasms and convulsions.
Vomiting milk and clear feces: During gestation, if the mother excessively seeks coolness, cold qi enters the fetal sac. Later, if milk and food are given while the infant is still unsettled from crying, Qi and food knot together and do not disperse for a long time, damaging the Spleen and Stomach. Mild cases cause vomiting and diarrhea; severe cases cause borborygmus, rebellious Qi, overflowing saliva, making it difficult to treat.
Do not lightly administer sedative/heavy-settling medicines: Shuiyin (Mercurius), Qingfen (Calomel), Zhusha (Cinnabar), Zhu Po (Pearl and Amber), although said to resolve phlegm and settle the heart, should not be used casually. All children fear taking medicine. If the disease source is not thoroughly investigated and accurate, and the medicine does not hit the pathology accurately, do not administer it.
Dan Du caused by bathing: Within the first week, the skin and muscles are fragile and tender, and the interstices (*Cou Li*) are not dense. Washing may cause damp-heat to stagnate and steam, transforming into Chi You Dan Du (Red Roaming Erysipelas). Severe fever appears on the body; if the toxin enters the abdomen, death occurs. Some, due to bathing, catch wind leading to cough and rebellious Qi, gradually becoming critically ill, starting from here.
