Tinea (ringworm) presents in five types: namely, damp tinea, stubborn tinea, wind tinea, horse tinea, and cow tinea. All these conditions arise from dryness-heat in the blood level, leading to wind-toxin attacking the skin. The lesions are superficial, even more so than scabies, and are often complicated by wind-dampness-heat-toxin. In some cases, parasites may develop over a long period, resulting in chronic non-healing wounds. Treatment should involve both internal and external medications. One effective approach is to use Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Windproof Unblocking Supreme Powder), reducing the dosage of Mangxiao (Mirabilite) and Dahuang (Rhubarb), and adding Pingtong (Floating Duckweed) and Zaojiaoci (Gleditsia Spine). This should be taken internally, accompanied by external application.
Main Formula: Pingtong (Duckweed), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong), Chishao (Red Peony Root), Mahuang (Ephedra) [reduce dosage by half in hot weather], Jingjie (Schizonepeta), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia), Gancao (Licorice) [each 2 qian], Danshichixu (Fermented Soybean) [60 grains]. Add two stalks of Congbai (Scallion White) to the above ingredients, decoct with water, and take orally to induce sweating.
External Application Formula: Xionghuang (Realgar), Banmao (Mylabris) [10 insects], Chuangzi (Cnidium Seed) [powdered], Hanshuishi (Calcitum), Jinmaogouji (Cibotium Barometz), Qingfen (Calomel), Liuhuang (Sulfur), Puxiao (Natrii Sulfas) [each 5 fen]. Grind each ingredient into a fine powder, mix uniformly, and apply with sesame oil. If there is excessive exudate, apply the dry powder directly.
Another Prescription: Bailian (Ampelopsis Radix), Chuanjinpi (Hibiscus Tiliaceus Bark), Xionghuang (Realgar) [3 qian]. Grind into a fine powder, mix with Wugen Water (rainwater or dew), and steam over rice until it turns red. Do not scratch the tinea before applying medication, and avoid washing the area for seven days.
Another Prescription: Kufan (Alumen Exsiccatum), Zhangnao (Borneolum Syntheticum) [4 qian and 2 qian respectively]. Grind into a fine powder, mix with vinegar, and rub on scratched areas.
Simple Method: Mash one black date (Heizao) and three kernels of Badou (Croton Seed) evenly, then rub onto the affected area.
Another Method: Crush garlic and boil in water. After bathing and drying the body, apply raw Tung Oil (Tung Tree Fruit Oil) to the affected area and dry with heat until healed.
Recently, contact with newly lacquered vessels or getting lacquer on the body, and inhaling its fumes, can cause swelling, heat, pain, and itching of the face and body. Some attribute this to individuals with a Wood constitution being susceptible to lacquer toxicity.
Main Formula: Gancao (Licorice), Huashi (Talcum) [each 3 qian], Lianqiao (Forsythia Fruit) [1.5 qian]. Decoct with water, and mix in Xionghuang (Realgar) and Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis) before taking.
Simple Methods: Apply water used for sharpening knives at iron shops, or... [Note: The phrase "pen di gou jiao" appears to be a textual error in the original text, likely meaning "affected area"; translated as such for medical accuracy] ...apply. Alternatively, wash with a decoction of Shanmu (Chinese Fir) wood shavings, which is effective. Or, roast crab shells, grind into powder, mix with water, and apply. If the face and whole body are affected, bathe in a decoction of Gancao (Licorice) to find relief.
