Generally, when bone-like foreign bodies are lodged in the throat and cannot descend, if they can be expelled upwards through vomiting, this is considered a favorable outcome (Shun). Among treatment methods, none is more effective than inducing emesis (Yong Tu), either by stimulating the pharynx with fingers, or by using goose feathers dipped in tung oil, or by stirring a lamp wick in lamp oil to induce vomiting, causing the lodged object to be expelled. This should be done urgently; otherwise, delay will lead to pharyngeal swelling and digestion of the food, making emesis impossible. Some patients, due to procrastination and fasting for days, reach an incurable state. For example: the saliva of cormorants (Lu E), jackals (Chai), and otters (Ta) can dissolve fish bones; comb ash can dissolve hair obstructions; magnetite (Cishi) attracts iron; fox, tiger, and dog saliva can dissolve various bones (principles should be inferred analogously).
Prepare a small cup filled with water or hot water. Hold up the thumb, index finger, and little finger of the left hand, while bending the middle and ring fingers to support the cup horizontally facing east. Place the left foot sideways facing east and stand the right foot vertically in a "Ding" character shape. Hold up the index finger of the right hand, bending the other four fingers. Write nine characters above the water surface, then cover them with seal script characters. Inhale deeply towards the east, blow into the water, and have the patient drink it; the obstruction will dissolve. If a young child cannot drink, white malt sugar (Bai Yi Tang) can be used to stick to the bone, which will then pass down or be vomited out.
Fish bone obstruction: Chew the white part of leeks (Jiu Bai) until soft, tie it with a thin thread, swallow it into the mouth until it reaches the obstruction site, and pull the thread to extract the bone.
Alternatively: Take one cup of water, silently visualize writing the character "Dragon" (Long) in the water with the left eye. Drink no more than two cups; for children, write the character for them to drink.
Alternatively: Powderize Sandoren (Sha Ren) and Licorice Root (Gan Cao), wrap in cotton, hold in the mouth, and slowly swallow saliva; after a long time, it will be expectorated with phlegm. Alternatively, crush Daylily Root (Xuan Cao Gen) and extract juice to swallow.
Alternatively: Scratch the throat downwards with otter claws (Ta Zhua). Or hold otter bone in the mouth to facilitate downward movement. Alternatively, crush Golden Phoenix Flower seeds or roots, extract juice, and ingest.
Alternatively: Blowing Saponin Fruit powder (Zao Jia Mo) into the nasal cavity induces sneezing, expelling the lodged object. Alternatively, recite "Cormorant" seven times and swallow with water.
Alternatively: Place the fish bone on the vertex (Baihui area), upon coughing, or repeatedly strike the back of the bone with both hands, and it will be expelled immediately.
Alternatively: For fish bone piercing flesh causing stabbing pain, decoct Evodia Fruit (Wu Zhu Yu) soup to drink. Or drink half a cup of good rice vinegar.
Various bone obstructions: Decoct Peony Root Bark (Wei Ling Xian) juice, add rock sugar, and ingest. Alternatively, crush Wild Ramie Root (Ye Zhu Gen) and make pills. For chicken bones, take with chicken broth; for fish bones, take with fish broth.
Alternatively: Lift the hind leg of a dog to induce salivation, and drink a small amount. Alternatively, slightly crush Coriander (Hu Sui), mix with vinegar, and swallow with the residue.
Alternatively: Crush frost plum meat, wrap in cotton like a finger size, take with cold tea, pull the thread to induce vomiting.
Wheat awn obstruction: Hang a goose upside down to collect saliva, and drink to eliminate.
Bamboo splinter: Boil rotten bamboo fence sticks in fast-flowing water and drink.
Coin obstruction: Extract juice from fresh Caltrop (Ci Gu) and drink. Or juice from Water Chestnut (Bi Qi), Mugwort juice (Ai Ye), or decoct 4 liang of Stemona Root (Bai Bu) and take with wine for efficacy.
Coins, gold/silver objects: Use Lead White (Hu Fen, 1 liang), mix with a small amount of Niter (Xiao Shi), divide into two doses. If in the abdomen, this medication can also dissolve them.
Alternatively: Take Scallion bulbs (Xie Huang), sun-dry until yellow and withered, cook thoroughly without cutting, eat a large bundle to expel.
Alternatively: Accidental swallowing of needles. Take a piece of porcelain, breathe onto it, and the needle will be expelled.
Alternatively: Consuming excessive amounts of pork or mutton fat juice will cause self-expulsion via diarrhea.
A child accidentally swallowed a fishing hook, piercing the throat, but the line remained outside. Thread several beads onto the line, insert them into the throat one by one, use the beads to push against the hook, disengage the barb, and pull sharply to extract the hook. This is a clever method.
Another case of coin obstruction in the throat: Roll white paper tightly like a chopstick, cut the end transversely to create a hook-like shape. Bind a hooked needle to the end of another chopstick so it cannot detach. Gently swallow, lifting and pressing lightly. Once the hook engages the coin hole, insert the paper roll into the throat, press against the hook tip, and pull sharply to extract.
