Yin-chord (Chord-like pulse at the Chi position) with abdominal pain, or a fine and tight pulse, both indicate abdominal pain. A soggy and slippery pulse indicates phlegm-fluid retention; a short and slippery pulse indicates retained food stagnation. A knotted and choppy pulse indicates dead blood (blood stasis); a deep and hidden pulse indicates Qi stagnation. A tight pulse at the Chi position corresponds to pain below the umbilicus.
If the pulse is chord-like and urgent, with pain in the lower abdomen, severe pain will necessarily present with a hidden (Fu) pulse. A large pulse indicates a long-standing disease; a fine, small, and slow pulse is easy to treat; however, if the pulse is solid, large, firm, rapid, floating, and long, it is difficult to treat. Severe pain accompanied by panting, and blackening of the area between the nose and upper lip (Ren Zhong), indicates a fatal condition. If the Yin-chord or tight pulse is present, warming methods are appropriate; if the pulse is deep, chord-like, slippery, and solid, purgative methods may be used.
