The eyebrows belong to the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian (Ling Shu states: When a person sneezes, it is treated by tonifying the Foot-Taiyang meridian and guiding Ying Qi to the root of the eyebrows. It also states: On the upper part of the Foot-Taiyang meridian, abundant blood and Qi result in beautiful eyebrows with fine hairs; excessive blood and deficient Qi result in ugly eyebrows. Zhu Danxi stated: Pain in the supraorbital ridge belongs to Wind-Heat and Phlegm, treated similarly to Head Wind syndrome, using Bai Zhi (Aucklandiae Radix) and Jiu Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix processed with wine) ground into fine powder, taken with tea prepared water. Xu Bolu stated: I often suffered from this condition, which was cured miraculously by Chuan Xiong Cha Tiao San). The eyebrows also belong to the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian (Ling Shu states: The area between the eyebrows corresponds to the Lung organ; this area refers to the space between the eyebrows. Color changes appearing on the thin skin between the eyebrows indicate disease in the skin. Dai Fu'an stated: There is a syndrome of Phlegm-Fluid in the Liver Meridian; upon onset, there is pain in the supraorbital ridge, inability to open the eyes, calmness during the day and exacerbation at night. It is suitable to use Dao Tan Yin or Xiong Xin Tang with sprouted tea removed, or administer Qingzhou Bai Wan Zi sent down with Er Chen Tang, which is very effective).
The eyes generally belong to the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian (Ling Shu states: The eyes are the external organs of the Liver; thus, patients with Liver disease have a bluish complexion. It also states: Liver Qi connects to the eyes; when Liver Qi is harmonious, the eyes can distinguish the five colors. It also states: The Liver acts as the general, enabling observation of the exterior; to know if the Liver is solid, observe the size of the eyes. It also states: At fifty years of age, Liver Qi begins to decline, the liver lobes begin to thin, bile production decreases, and vision begins to dim. It also states: The Foot-Jueyin meridian connects to the eye system, emerges upward to the forehead, and its branch descends from the eye system to the cheek. Su Wen states: The color Green of the East internally connects to the Liver and opens into the eyes, fearing cold. Note: 'Qing' means cold. It also states: The Liver receives blood to enable vision. Qiao Yue stated: When Liver Qi perishes, the eyes become dry and sleepy. Dai Fu'an stated: Red eyes come in several types, all caused by Blood stagnation in the Liver Meridian. It is suitable to use equal parts of Hei Shen San and Xiao Feng San, mixed with plain hot water, taken after meals and before sleep). The eyes also belong to the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian (Ling Shu states: The eyes are the messengers of the Heart; the Heart is the residence of Spirit; thus, when Spirit and Essence are disordered and do not rotate, suddenly seeing unusual places causes Spirit, Soul, and Hun to scatter and lose coordination, resulting in confusion. It also states: The branch of the Hand-Shaoyin meridian ascends from the Heart system along the throat to connect with the eye system. Su Wen states: The Heart is the essence of the Five Zang organs; the eyes are its orifices. It also states: If Heart Fire is excessively abundant, the hundred vessels boil, blood vessels reverse flow, pathogenic factors harm the orifices, and even at dawn, the light of the sun and moon becomes unclear). The eyes also belong to the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian and Yangming Stomach Meridian (Su Wen states: In all conditions involving Water-Qi, mild cases first manifest in the eyes. Water is Yin, and the area under the eyes is also Yin; the abdomen is the residence of Supreme Yin; thus, when Water resides in the abdomen, swelling under the eyes inevitably occurs. Ling Shu states: The sinews of the Foot-Yangming meridian, those running straight, knot above the nose and combine with the Taiyang meridian to form the lower eyelid framework. In acute cases, the eyes cannot close; heat causes sinew flaccidity, preventing the eyes from opening. Sun Jingsi stated: Ancients treated eye diseases using Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven) as the chief herb, likely because eye diseases often stem from Phlegm in the Spleen and Stomach, which infiltrates the Liver, leading to dizziness over time; thus, Shen Qu is used to strengthen the Spleen and Stomach and resolve Phlegm-Fluid. Yi Shuo stated: A patient suffered from red, swollen, and painful eyes and could not eat. Pulse diagnosis revealed Excess Liver and Deficient Spleen. Using cooling herbs to pacify the Liver would damage the Spleen; using warming herbs to benefit the Spleen would exacerbate Liver Excess and worsen the condition. How to treat? The answer is: Use warm-neutral herbs with doubled Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex), avoiding tea preparation to prevent Spleen damage. Rou Gui suppresses Liver Wood and benefits Spleen Earth, achieving two goals at once. The transmission states: Wood withers when encountering Cinnamon). The eyes also belong to the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian (Ling Shu states: The root of the Foot-Taiyang meridian is five cun above the heel, the mark is at the two Luo points, originating at Zhi Yin and knotting at Ming Men. Ming Men refers to the eyes. It also states: When the Taiyang meridian reaches its end, symptoms include staring upward and opisthotonos. It also states: The sinews of the Foot-Taiyang Bladder meridian, their branches, form the upper eyelid framework. Xuan Zhu stated: The symptom of 'Dai Yan' refers to the eyeballs not rotating but gazing upward. Moxibustion at Kunlun point causes the eyes to drop immediately without staring upward; this point is located in the depression behind the lateral malleolus and calcaneus, where arterial pulsation is palpable. If moxibustion fails to lower the eyes, it indicates the termination of Taiyang meridian Qi. Thus, it is said: When the Taiyang meridian ends, staring upward occurs). They also relate to the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian (Su Wen states: The Luo vessel of Shaoyang, when the joints become lax, leads to severance of the eye system. When the eye system is severed, the eyes remain fixed and stare straight ahead. Ling Shu states: Diagnosing eye pain, red veins descending from top to bottom indicate Taiyang disease; ascending from bottom to top indicate Yangming disease; moving from outside inward indicate Shaoyang disease. Note: 'Zhen' here means visual inspection, not pulse diagnosis. 'Chi Mai' refers to red veins in the eye). Furthermore, the five colors correspond to the Five Zang organs (Ling Shu states: Hold the patient's chi skin, observe the firmness or fragility, size, smoothness or roughness, coldness or warmth, dryness or dampness of the flesh. Then observe the five colors of the eyes to understand the state of the Five Zang organs and determine life or death prognosis. Thus, red eyes indicate disease in the Heart; white in the Lung; green in the Liver; yellow in the Spleen; black in the Kidney; yellow that cannot be named indicates disease in the chest. Qian Zhongyang stated: Lesions in the inner canthus that are red indicate Heart Heat, treated primarily with Dao Chi San; pale red indicates Heart Deficient Heat, treated primarily with Sheng Xi San; green indicates Liver Heat, treated primarily with Xie Qing Wan; yellow indicates Spleen Heat, treated primarily with Xie Huang Wan; lack of luster indicates Kidney Deficiency, treated primarily with Di Huang Wan). Conceptually, they encompass all Zang and Fu organs (Ling Shu states: The essence and Qi of the Five Zang and Six Fu organs all ascend to the eyes to provide clarity. The gathering place of essence is the eye; the essence of Bone forms the pupil; the essence of Sinew forms the iris; the essence of Blood forms the collateral vessels; the essence of Qi forms the sclera; the essence of Muscle forms the tendons that constrain and wrap the eye. The essence of Bone, Sinew, Blood, and Qi, combined with the vessels, forms the eye system, connecting upward to the Brain and exiting posteriorly at the neck. Thus, when pathogenic factors strike the neck, coinciding with bodily deficiency, deep invasion follows the eye system into the Brain. Note: Essence and Qi refer to Jin Ye fluids).
