Diagram of the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian
Diagram of the Kidneys
When parents unite their essence, before any specific form appears, the "Heche" (River Cart, referring to primordial Qi) first forms. A single stalk emerges from the center, resembling a nascent lotus stamen; this is the umbilical cord. The single point within the stamen is the origin of generating the body and establishing life, which is the Mingmen (Gate of Life). From this point, Heaven generates Water in its first phase, forming the two kidneys initially.
The Mingmen resides in the center, while the two kidneys open and close on the left and right, much like the threshold of a door. Hence it is called Mingmen. Generally, one Yang line exists between two Yin lines, thereby forming the Kan trigram (☵). The *Jia Yi Jing* states: "Kidney means to draw or guide; it can guide Qi to penetrate into the bone marrow." The *Zhi Yan* states: "Kidney relates to Spirit; it wondrously transforms all things and is named accordingly."
There are two kidneys, shaped like kidney beans (cowpeas), weighing one jin and one liang. They attach to the 14th thoracic vertebra of the spine, located on both sides below the stomach, aligned anteriorly and posteriorly with the umbilicus.
Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian
The Kidney is the official of strength and vigor, from whom skills and techniques arise. It is the root of hibernation and storage, and the residence of Essence. All five Zang organs possess Essence, but the Kidney is where they gather. Therefore, the Kidney is said to be the house of Essence, with the Bladder as its paired Fu organ. Its mother element is Lung Metal, and its child element is Liver Wood. It controls Heart Fire and is controlled by Spleen Earth (Note: Original text says "its thief is Spleen Earth", implying mutual overcoming or specific pathological interaction). Its brilliance manifests in the hair, and it nourishes the bones. Its position is in the North, it stores Will (Zhi), prospers in Winter, corresponds to the color Black, has a deep and slippery pulse, musical note Yu, number Six, odor putrid, dislikes Dryness, and vocalization groaning. In the Seven Emotions, it corresponds to Fear; in the Six Qi, to Cold; in the Five Flavors, to Salty; in the Heavenly Stems, to Gui; in the Earthly Branches, to Zi; in the Eight Trigrams, to Kan; and in the Five Elements, to Water. Its external manifestation is the ears. Its shape is like a kidney bean, purple-black in color, two in number, merging into the spinal muscles, attaching to the 14th thoracic vertebra, one and a half cun on either side. Externally wrapped in yellow fat, internally pale white. The two kidneys communicate via a horizontal tube with a central acupoint, which is the Mingmen, level with the umbilicus anteriorly. This meridian has abundant Qi and little Blood; Qi and Blood flow into it during the You hour (5-7 PM). Insufficiency leads to Jue (cold extremities/reversal); excess leads to intestinal diarrhea. The normal pulse is Deep; the pathological "Thief" pulse is Slow. It faces death on Wu and Ji days. Its associated animal is the pig, grain is soybean, and celestial body is Chen Xing (Mercury).
Clinical manifestations include: face like lacquer, clear corners of the eyes, face black as charcoal, thirst with dry tongue, swollen and painful dry throat, coughing up blood, chest fullness, pain in the abdomen and lower abdomen, difficult defecation, pain at the umbilicus, left hypochondrium, back, shoulder, and thigh region, hunger without desire to eat, heart feeling empty as if hungry, abdominal distension with leg swelling, cough, pain in the spine, buttocks, and posterior thigh, rebellious Qi below the umbilicus, acute pain and diarrhea in the lower abdomen, flaccidity and coldness of the feet, edema below, cold and reversed coldness of the feet, intestinal dysentery, dampness in the genital area, blackening of the fourth toe, cyanosis and coldness of fingers, heat in the soles of the feet, drowsiness, desire to rise when sitting, frostbite with diarrhea, excessive thinking and fear, inability to control or lift the limbs. Sitting long in damp places or forcing entry into water after strenuous exertion will injure the Kidney. Excess patterns manifest as dreams of waist and spine loosening; deficiency patterns manifest as dreams of wading through water in fear. Fear injures the Kidney; Thought overcomes Fear; Cold injures Blood; Dryness overcomes Cold; Salty flavor injures Blood; Sweet flavor overcomes Salty. Salty flavor enters the Bones. In bone diseases, do not consume too much salty food; excessive salty intake causes bone pain and tooth loss.
The pathway of this meridian receives connection from the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian. It originates below the little toe, slanting towards the Yongquan (Spring under Foot) acupoint in the center of the sole. From Yongquan, it turns forward to the medial malleolus, arising below Ran Gu beneath the large bone. It follows behind the medial malleolus to Tai Xi, branches into the heel to Da Zhong, Zhao Hai, and Shui Quan. Following the medial malleolus, it runs posterior to the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian and Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian, passing through Fuliu and Jiaoxin of this meridian, crossing San Yin Jiao of the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian, ascending to the medial aspect of the popliteal fossa, following Zhu Bin, emerging from the medial margin of the popliteal fossa, reaching Yin Gu. From Yin Gu, it ascends along the posterior medial aspect of the thigh, penetrates the spine to meet Chang Qiang of the Du Meridian, circles out anteriorly, following Heng Gu, Da He, Qi Xue, Si Man, Zhong Zhu, and Mang Shu. At the location of Huang Shu, on the left and right of the umbilicus, it belongs to the Kidney, descends below the umbilicus, passes Guan Yuan and Zhong Ji of the Ren Meridian, and connects to the Bladder. The straight branch ascends from the point where it belongs to the Kidney at Huang Shu, following Shang Qu, Shi Guan (text says Shi Fu, likely error for Shi Guan), Yin Du, Tong Gu, etc., penetrating the Liver, ascending along You Men, piercing the diaphragm, passing Bu Lang, entering the Lungs. Following Shen Feng, Ling Xu, Shen Zang, Huo Zhong, and Yu Fu, it ascends along the throat, running parallel to Ren Ying of the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian, flanking the root of the tongue to terminate. The branch diverges from Shen Zang, winds around the Heart, pours into the Chest, meets Dan Zhong of the Ren Meridian, and intersects with the Hand-Jueyin Pericardium Meridian, descending from Tian Chi and Tian Quan.
