In all cases of measles (Rash Disease), it is advisable to clear the Lung Metal and descend Fire, so as to prevent the Lung from being controlled by Heart Fire; otherwise, the Spleen, which is the Mother of the Lung, will also be affected, inevitably leading to various complications. The following prescriptions can be used to descend Fire.
Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Ju Hong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix), Gua Lou Ren (Trichosanthis Semen), Shan Zhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Su Zi (Perillae Fructus), Zhu Ye (Bambusae Folium).
If sweating is present, add Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma); if the tongue coating is thick and greasy, increase the dosage of Huang Qin; for bone-steaming fever, add Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex); for joint pain, add Shi Chang Pu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma); for hemoptysis, add stir-fried Shan Zhi and Huang Qin.
Measles are essentially toxins of the Spleen and Lung. If Shan Zhi alone is insufficient, Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) must be used. The dosage of Shi Gao should not be rigidly fixed but determined according to the severity of the condition.
For measles that fail to erupt fully accompanied by wheezing, add Ting Li Zi (Lepidii Semen), Bai Bu (Stemonae Radix), Bai Guo (Ginkgo Semen), and Fu Ling (Poria).
When measles are obscured by wind and fail to emerge clearly, a harmonizing method combined with ascending and dispersing herbs should be employed. Even if they do not reappear, recovery is possible. (Use He Jie San or Qing Du Yin.)
If measles have not emerged significantly after three days, indicating internal attack of toxins, hoarseness, cough with phlegm, and constipation, this prescription yields miraculous results: Gua Lou Ren (2 liang), Chao Huang Qin (4 qian).
If heat is severe, add Zhi Ke (1 liang), Zhi Mu, Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex), Hua Fen, Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Shan Zhi, Xing Ren, Chai Hu, Gou Teng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis), Shi Chang Pu, Tian Ma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma), Zhu Ye, and Deng Cao (Junci Medulla). Decoct in water and take orally. Such conditions will surely resolve within two days.
For diarrhea following measles accompanied by irritability and thirst, use Bai Hu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) added with Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Zhi Mu, Shi Gao, and Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
For dry retching after measles, use Jie Du Tang (Detoxification Decoction) containing Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huang Qin, Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex), and Shan Zhi, all prepared with wine frying.
For persistent vomiting after measles, use Chen Pi, Zhu Ru (Bambusae Caulis in Materia Medica), and Shi Gao.
In summary, the color of measles differs from smallpox. Smallpox fears excessive redness to prevent ulceration, whereas measles prefer uniform redness and must not turn purple or black. The concern lies in incomplete eruption; if erupted fully, toxins disperse. Therefore, when treating measles, one must observe climatic changes (cold or warm) and use herbs to induce dispersion.
Dispersion Prescription: Once the exterior is resolved, health returns. Ingredients include: Fu Hua (Kalanchoes Flos / Sonchus Flos - note: context implies warming/dispersing herb, likely Ku Dong Hua or similar local variant, here transliterated as Fu Hua), Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Chang Pu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Tian Ma, Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba), Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), and Zhi Ke.
For continuous bleeding from stool, vomit, or nosebleeds during measles, separately use Xi Jiao Di Huang Tang (Rhino Horn and Rehmannia Decoction - ingredients: Sheng Di Huang, Xi Jiao, Mu Dan Pi, Chi Shao Yao) combined with Jie Du San.
For pregnant women contracting measles, use Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Huang Qin, Su Ye (Perillae Folium), and Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus).
For patients refusing food during measles, if the complexion shows a pale red luster, it is harmless. This indicates unresolved toxins and internal excess heat causing anorexia.
For severe cold-wind invasion presenting with millet-like pores, blue forehead, cold feet, fever without sweat, and no rash appearing after 6-7 or more than 10 days, accompanied by cough, clear nasal discharge, and slightly swollen eyelids, it is definitely measles. Do not treat recklessly. First use Ma Huang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) to disperse the exterior, allowing the rash to emerge naturally.
Da Wu Bi San (Great Incomparable Powder):
Fen Cao (Licorice Root, 1 liang), Fei Hua Shi (Prepared Talcum, 6 liang), Fei Chen Sha (Prepared Cinnabar, 3 qian), Fei Xiong Huang (Prepared Realgar, 1 qian).
Xiao Wu Bi San (Small Incomparable Powder):
Fen Cao (5 qian), Fei Hua Shi (6 qian), Han Shui Shi (Calcitum, 5 qian), Fei Shi Gao (1 liang), Guang Yu Jin (Curcumae Radix, 7 fen).
Grind the above two powders and take orally. For measles with wheezing, cough, rapid breathing, and flushed face, use these powders: 1 qian of Da Wu Bi San or 6 fen of Xiao Wu Bi San per dose. This promotes toxin excretion via urine and stops fever.
Experience Formula for Mild Measles:
Take one loofah sponge, air-dry it, place it on a new tile surface on New Year's Eve, bury it in ash, spread on the ground to remove fire qi, grind into powder, and take with boiling water. Repeat annually. After 3-4 courses, children will never contract measles. (Note: With the advent of cowpox vaccination preventing smallpox, this excellent formula prevents mild measles, making it a precious treasure for parents.)
