Shen Lizhai, Grand Secretary of Rites, suffered a lumbar sprain with pain in early winter, accompanied by obstructed phlegm and Qi in the chest. He was treated with Zhiqiao (Fructus Aurantii), Qingpi (Exocarpium Citri Grandis), Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri), Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae), Huixiang (Fructus Foeniculi), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Chishao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata), and Honghua (Flos Carthami). After four doses, he recovered. However, he had poor appetite and slight tidal fever. He was then prescribed Renshen (Radix Ginseng), [Character missing in original text], Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), and Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) each at 1 qian; Danggui shen (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, root part) at 2 qian; Chuanxiong at 8 qian; Ruan Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri, soft variety), Digupi (Cortex Lycii), and Zhigancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) each at 5 fen. After more than ten doses, he was fully recovered.
Liu Shangbao suffered a sprain in his arm and body causing pain. After taking Tougudan (Bone-Penetrating Pill), his pain worsened to involve all joints, especially in the lower body. He was treated with Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction), Nanting (Rhizoma Arisaematis), Qianghuo (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae), Mugua (Fructus Chaenomelis), Cangzhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Lanceae), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), and Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri). His body pain subsided. Subsequently, Guiwei (Tail of Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Chishao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), and Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis) were added to the previous prescription, leading to a complete cure.
Zheng Libu had chronic damp-phlegm. In early winter, he fell from a horse and took acrid-hot blood-breaking herbs, resulting in generalized pain, fever, dry mouth, and a large, slippery pulse. This was due to hot herbs agitating phlegm-fire. He was treated with Qingzao Tang (Clear-Dryness Decoction), removing Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), and Huangqi (Radix Astragali), and adding Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Shanzhi (Fructus Gardeniae), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae), and Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri). The heat and pain disappeared immediately, and the affected area improved slightly. He was then cured using Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction), Qianghuo (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii), Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis), Cangzhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Lanceae), Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri), Jiangzhi Shengdi (Ginger-processed Rhizoma Rehmanniae Recens), and Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis).
Yang Sitian’s bone had been reduced (HT), but pain persisted despite medication. His Liver pulse was surging and rapid, indicating excessive Liver Fire causing pain. Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) was administered with added Shanzhi (Fructus Gardeniae) and Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis). After two doses, the pain ceased. He was then regulated with Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction), Shanzhi (Fructus Gardeniae), Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae), and Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri), leading to recovery.
A woman suffered an arm contusion with bleeding, bone pain, fever, thirst, irritability, dizziness, and worsening symptoms in the late afternoon. This was a syndrome of Yin deficiency with internal heat. She was treated with Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasure Decoction) plus Danpi (Cortex Moutan), Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis), Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae), Gusuibu (Os Dinosauri), Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi), and Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill). All symptoms resolved. Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi) was removed, and Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae) and Xuduan (Radix Dipsaci) were added. After more than twenty doses, the wound healed.
(Attached: Qi Deficiency with Blood Stasis, Qi Deficiency preventing suppuration.)
A young boy injured his foot, causing pain without discoloration of the flesh, indicating bone injury. He was frequently fumigated with stir-fried scallions. At the fifth watch (3-5 AM), Hexue Dingtong Wan (Blood-Nourishing and Pain-Calming Pill) was given. Intermittently, formulas strengthening the stomach and generating Qi and Blood were used. After several days, Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) was administered, and he recovered after over three months.
A young boy dislocated and reduced his arm bone, experiencing swelling, pain, and fever. Taking Liqi (Qi-Circulating) medicines worsened the condition, reducing his appetite. Fumigation with scallions stopped the pain immediately. He was treated with Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction), Huangqi (Radix Astragali), Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri), Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis), Xuduan (Radix Dipsaci), and Gusuibu (Os Dinosauri). His appetite improved, and swelling/pain subsided. Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) with Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis) and Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae) was then used. As Qi and Blood harmonized, the fever receded and he recovered.
Dai Jishi fell from a horse, resulting in swollen, painful legs with dark discoloration, poor appetite, and fatigue. This was due to deficient Yuan Qi failing to transform and dissipate blood stasis. Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) was used, removing Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) and Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri), and adding Mugua (Fructus Chaenomelis), Fuling (Sclerotium Poriae), Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), and Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae). He was cured.
Liu Wuqing, Vice Minister of Rites, sustained a bruise with mild pain and poor appetite. Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) was prescribed with doubled Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) and Huangqi (Radix Astragali). The pain gradually ceased. After a month, blood stasis consolidated internally without suppuration. He believed he was cured, but this was actually extreme Yang Qi deficiency requiring tonification. He refused treatment. By spring, he experienced dizziness and phlegm-saliva obstruction. Taking Qingqi Hua Tan (Clear Qi and Transform Phlegm) medicines worsened the condition, resulting in a surging yet faint pulse upon deep pressure. (This may refer to differences between light and heavy palpation.) It was proposed to treat with Renshen (Radix Ginseng), [Character missing], Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), and Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata) for tonification. He did not believe it. In early autumn, following anger, he fainted and collapsed. (Xiong's Note: Internal consolidation of blood stasis may well have resulted from the initial treatment lacking circulating agents.)
