消障救睛散:石斛钱半,生研,羚羊角一钱,草决明一钱,连翘钱半,白蒺藜一钱,龙胆草五分酒炒灰,甘菊八分,木贼草五分,汉防己一钱,茺蔚子一钱,水二盅,煎八分,食远服。王晋三说:白睛 肉,状若鱼胞,世人咸用外点钩割,殊非正治。余因制此方,以石蟹为君,性大寒而燥,去湿恝,消 肉,如鼓应桴,堪称仙品。佐以羚羊角之向导,熄肝风散恶血;草决明疗青盲,去白膜;连翘泻客热,散结气,专泄大小 之热;
Not limited to eye diseases.) The discussion is very detailed. Based on my verification, this theory is indeed correct. However, looking at it from the present perspective, eye diseases can be attributed to blood deficiency or qi deficiency. My blood was originally insufficient, and my qi was even more deficient. Xue Lizhai treated a case of tightness and dryness in both eyes with inability to gaze, attributing it to sinking of primordial qi, and used Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) with doubled doses of Renshen (Ginseng Radix) and Huangqi (Astragali Radix), resulting in a cure. I regret not having taken the aforementioned decoction more frequently in the past, but instead focusing solely on tonifying the kidneys and nourishing blood, which led to prolonged non-recovery. Only after reaching forty, due to frequent numbness in the fingers, did I take the aforementioned decoction extensively; although I had no intention of treating my eyes, my vision gradually improved, leading me to believe that my previous approach was erroneous.
In my childhood, I suffered from Fengxian Lanyan (inflammatory blepharitis with ulceration of the eyelid margins), causing great distress, to which various medicines were ineffective. I met a physician surnamed Chen at an inn in Chang'an, who gave me a white powder medicine to apply to the affected area of the eyes. It healed immediately upon application, proving extremely effective, yet he refused to pass on the prescription. Upon inquiry, he mentioned: "There are expelled roundworms inside." Expelled roundworms refer to Ascaris lumbricoides expelled from children's mouths, dried for use. It likely also contains prepared Lu Ganshi (Calamina). Truly a miraculous prescription.
Zhang Sanxi treated a patient with chronic eye disease that had resisted treatment; cooling herbs had all been tried without success. Pulse diagnosis revealed weak pulses in both hands. He prescribed Bazhen Jia Maidong (Eight-Treasure Decoction plus Ophiopogonis Radix). After one month, symptoms remained unchanged. It was then understood that poor digestion led to dryness and roughness in the intestines and stomach. Symptoms such as hair loss, wrinkled skin, dysphagia, stranguria, and retention, along with blurred vision and deafness, were all caused by the decline of qi, fluids, blood vessels, Ying and Wei (nutritive and defensive qi), leading to impaired ascending and descending movements, and obstruction by deficient fire. Thus, when Yuanfu (pores/orifices) are blocked, urine becomes turbid; when fire flares upward, vision becomes blurred, resembling looking through a curtain. Danxi and Dongyuan treated blurred vision using Renshen (Ginseng Radix) and Huangqi (Astragali Radix) to tonify qi and blood. Over time, efficacy was invariably achieved because abundant qi and blood ensure patent Yuanfu and clear ascending-descending dynamics.
A patient presented with red eyes and dark red ulcers beside the black pupil, accompanied by itchy ears. Treated as Kidney Wind using Sisheng San (Four Living Powder), relief occurred after two or three doses per episode. It was widely known as the "Holy Powder." According to *Shenghui Fang*, Sisheng San consists of Baifuzi (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), and Shayuan Jili (Astragali Complanati Semen).
A patient with trichiasis (in-turned eyelashes) was treated using one Mumiezi (Momordicae Semen), shelled and powdered, wrapped in cotton, and inserted into the nostril. For left eye pathology, insert into the right nostril, and vice versa. After one or two nights, the lashes naturally separated. (*Zhifa Hui*.)
Lu Xiaoyu treated the wife of Vice Minister Sun, who developed redness and pain in both eyes and bilateral temporal regions following anger. After half a month of treatment, the redness and pain intensified, swelling resembling a peach, with menorrhagia lasting several days, constipation for several days, anorexia, dizziness, and vomiting. Pulse diagnosis showed a wiry pulse on the left and slippery on the right, indicating excess Yang in both upper and lower aspects. He stated: "Xianghuo (Ministerial Fire) resides in the Liver and Gallbladder. Anger triggers it, causing eruptions like dragon-thunder fire, which cannot be forcibly suppressed. Although the pathology manifests severely above and mildly below, it originates from below rebelling upwards." He prescribed a decoction of Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) vinegar-fried, Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) stir-fried, Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) salt-water fried, Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) wine-fried, Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Danpi (Moutan Cortex), Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis), and Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia) combined with Yiqing Wan (Suppress Green Pill) and Longhui Wan (Dragon Gall Bladder Pill). Two doses of each pill/decoction were administered day and night, reducing symptoms by more than half. Since bowel movements remained unpassed and menstruation continued, the decoction was maintained, combined with Runzi Wan (Moisten Character Pill). Bowel movement became difficult but passed; porridge was consumed, followed by sleep. By the next day, all symptoms resolved. Subsequently, Qingqi Yangying Tang (Clear Qi and Nourish Ying Decoction) was used for regulation.
An eighty-four-year-old man could read fine print at night. Inquiring, he said: "I obtained a miraculous prescription: wash the eyes once a year on September 23rd with Mulberry Leaf (Sangye), permanently eliminating dimness. (Best harvested on May 5th, June 6th, or Start of Winter.)"
The mother of Ni Xinxi, Lady Tao, lost her sight for eleven years due to grief over her son's death. Suddenly, a visitor arrived claiming he could cure blindness. At the time, his grandson was studying at the Imperial Academy, and clan relatives were holding a farewell banquet. The visitor said: "Please stay and watch." Opening his needle case, he inserted needles into the inner canthi of both eyes. Vision was instantly restored. He touched the grandson's head and said: "I have not seen you for a long time; you are now an adult." Xinxi offered one hundred taels of silver in gratitude, which the visitor refused before leaving. The crowd considered him divine. (*Yunjian Zazhi*.)
In Jiujiang, a husband beat his wife, causing both eyeballs to protrude. A passing soldier instructed her not to move, took a handkerchief wetted with water, supported the eyeballs, rotated them to align the tendons, and reinserted them. The area was wrapped with the wet cloth, instructing her not to open her eyes for three days. Impatient, she removed the wrap after two days. Her eyes returned to normal but often hurt when exposed to wind and cold. She attributed this to removing the wrap too early. (*Qiji Fang*, compiled by Wang Daicun.)
Gu Han of the Jin Dynasty cared for his blind sister-in-law, tasting medicine and serving meals, refusing to wear a hat or eat until she recovered. Her condition required Snake Gallbladder (Ranshe Dan). Gu Han could not obtain any. A boy handed him a box containing Snake Gallbladder. The boy turned into a blue bird upon exiting. His sister-in-law’s eyesight recovered. (*Book of Jin*.)
Wang Shuquan (Zhi Zhong) stated: "While traveling in Kuaiji, I studied early and ate only at Chen hour (7-9 AM). Prolonged practice caused eye dryness. Upon returning home from travel fatigue, a roommate gave me Yanjing (Salt Essence). Rubbing the eyes several times cured the ailment. If Salt Essence works thus, Qingyan (Blue Salt) must certainly treat eye diseases. Ancient prescriptions used Qingyan for teeth; cupping it in the hand to wash the eyes brightens vision. Yanjing is the essence from the bottom of salt warehouses." (*Zisheng Jing*.)
Prime Minister Li Gonggong of the Tang Dynasty accompanied the emperor in Shu, suffering daily eye issues: dryness, membrane formation, pain, seeing black spots bean-sized continuously for days, or seeing things like flying insect wings. Various treatments failed. Monk Zhishen said: "Your Excellency's illness stems from Wind-Toxin. When the Five Viscera are Excess, drain the Son; when Deficient, tonify the Mother. The Mother makes the Son Excess; the Son makes the Mother Deficient. Kidney is the Mother of Liver. Now the Kidney is affected by Wind-Toxin, causing Liver Deficiency. Liver Deficiency leads to visual hallucinations/dizziness, similar for other viscera. Podagra, Xiao Zhong, Xiao Ke, and various Winds all stem from Kidney Deficiency. Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) treats all these." (This monk deeply understood classic principles, though unable to fully elaborate, he remains a top-tier Tang dynasty practitioner. Conflicting theories merely confuse people.) Prescription: Sheng Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) and Shu Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) one jin each; Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis) and Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), de-lumed; Zhike (Aurantii Fructus) stir-fried, de-pithed; Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) wine-soaked; Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), peeled and de-husked, four liang each. Grind to fine powder, avoiding iron. Honey-pill sized like tung seeds. Take fifty pills empty-stomach with Doulin Jiu (Black Bean Dripping Wine). Doulin Jiu method: Half sheng of black beans, cleaned and winnowed, stir-fried until smoke rises, soaked in three sheng of wine. Do not consume the beans. Boiling Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) in this wine yields Zitang. (*Baibai Fang*)
Lu Jingyuan’s son suffered from inflammatory blepharitis with pain in both eyes, tears soaking cheeks forming ulcers. All medicines failed. While organizing old books, he found this prescription and tested it. Soon, medicinal tears flowed out along the ulcers, revealing small worms. He was subsequently cured. Remarkably effective. Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) one liang, Danzhuye (Lophatheri Herba) one liang, Baipix (Platycladi Cortex) one liang dry or two liang semi-dry. Chop the three ingredients, boil in two sheng of water until reduced to five he. Cool slightly, use for eye drops and washing affected areas, three to four times daily. (Ibid.)
Mantra for Stye (Hordeolum) already red/swollen but not suppurated is miraculous. Take a corner of the patient's clothing, tightly twist it, and rub it on the inner canthus of the affected eye. Each rub is accompanied by chanting "Yi Shen Di, Yi Jue Yan" (Move to the bottom, move the stye). Chant seven times in one breath, rub seven times. Twist tightly, tie a knot. Naturally subsides. Untie only when the eye is calm. Sincerity is crucial. The patient need not know the mantra; self-application is also effective. (Ibid.)
Zhu Danxi treated a patient whose eye disease flared up in spring and summer, treating it as Stagnation. Prescription: Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) wine-soaked, Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma) ginger-processed, Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma) and Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) child's urine-soaked, Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) two liang each, Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) stir-fried one liang, Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) child's urine-soaked one and a half liang, Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) wine-soaked, Caolongdan (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix) wine-steamed, Lubozi (Brassicae Semens) and Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis) half liang each, Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) three qian. Grind to powder, form pills with Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata). Cured after ten days to one month. (*Zhifa*.)
Chen Mingyuan from Huachuan suffered blindness for ten years. Various medicines failed; he considered himself disabled. Zhou Hanqing from Songyang examined him and said: "Although the opacity is internal, it is treatable." Using a needle inserted from the outer canthus into the back of the eyeball, he rolled up the opacity underneath. Vision suddenly cleared, distinguishing five colors. Chen regarded him as divine. (*Xu Cui*.)
Zhao Liangren stated: "Mr. Danxi once used Shengao (Ginseng Paste) to treat an elderly man with sudden blindness, darkness like night, exactly as described in *Lingshu*: 'When Qi escapes, vision is unclear.' I also treated a scholar with headache and congestion/pain in the left eye linked to Head Wind. Following Dai Ren's method, bleeding at Baihui (GV20) and Shangxing (GV23) failed. Then, bleeding at the second row of Foot Taiyang passing on the left side of the head, level with Shangxing, where pressure was painful, resulted in immediate cure. This indicates that acupuncture and herbs must hit the exact pathology. Medicine must counter the pathogen directly. Ancestors' prescriptions merely set standards/rules." (*Yaoyao Huowen*.)
Miao Zhongchun’s uncle suffered blurred vision post-illness, cured immediately by this formula, indicating Liver-Kidney deficiency. Genuine Gouqi (Lycii Fructus) one jin (remove stems); Genuine Huaisheng Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) one jin (large ones, washed with wine). Boil in river water in a clay pot until flavorless. Remove dregs, double-boil until drops form pearls (paste consistency). Add six liang of refined honey per jin of paste. Dissolve in plain warm water empty-stomach. (*Guang Biji*.)
Huang Xueyu Qianbai suffered from Wind-Lacrimation, tearing profusely outdoors. Miao Zhongchun sent a prescription: Gujingcao (Cerebi Cornea) as Sovereign herb; Jili (Tribuli Fructus) and Gouqi (Lycii Fructus) as Ministers. Formed into pills with Sheep Liver. Cured within less than one course. (Ibid.)
Xue Lizhai treated a man with red, itchy, painful eyes, photophobia, tearing, and ear itching. Various medicines failed; qi and blood declined daily, appetite decreased, itch intensified. Diagnosed as Wind-Heat attacking from Spleen and Kidney. Prescribed Sisheng San (Baifuzi, Huangqin, Duhuo, Shayuan Jili) mixed with wine, four doses. Cured. Another patient with dizziness, wind-skin itching, scratching leading to ulcers, cured with Bafeng San (Eight Winds Powder).
Zhang Shiwan treated Chan Heshang with eye disease for two years. Overuse of Wind-dispelling and Heat-clearing herbs caused continuous buzzing tinnitus and hard, dry constipation. A slight opacity appeared near the left eye. Seeing lamplight made it appear large as a bucket; moonlight made it appear small as a firefly. Zhang said: "This is Yin deficiency with Ministerial Fire acting up. The Moon is Yin essence; Kidney Water is dried up internally, unable to flood its light, hence appearing small. Lamplight burns oil, disturbing Yin excessively, unable to withstand the scorching heat, hence appearing large. Combining pulse and symptoms, this results from chronic mental/Spleen strain, excessive dryness in Fire/Earth organs, damaging True Yin of Kidney Water." Prescribed Tianwang Buxin Dan (Heavenly Emperor Heart-Nourishing Pill). Regarding Xu Zhonghan Yan: seeing sunlight causes blinding/misting, while lamplight enhances clarity. This stems from chronic Heart/Kidney labor, Upper Excess/Lower Deficiency. Upper Excess gathers Five Emotions in Pericardium, secretly insulting the Monarch (Heart); Lower Deficiency causes Ministerial Fire dysfunction, failing to govern clear observation. Lamplight aids this, enhancing clarity. This parallels infant colic due to fetal cold stopping upon exposure to fire. Can ophthalmologists grasp this principle?
Lizhai said: "Worldly tradition states that if a small blister appears on the eye initially, checking the back reveals a tiny red spot like a sore. Pricking the eye cures it immediately, named 'Stitch Needle,' actually resolving Heat accumulation in Foot Taiyang Meridian. Trials prove effective."
Zhang Ziyan, a Junior Minister, often saw flashing lights and a white-robed figure resembling a Buddha in late life. Believing it devoutly, he abstained from meat and alcohol, becoming emaciated and ill. Seeking Wang Shouqing’s diagnosis, Wang was shocked, said nothing, and administered dozens of large pills and over a thousand small pills. Instruction: Finish within ten days, then report back. Upon compliance, the white figure turned yellow, and light vanished. Craving meat and alcohol returned. Next day, yellow disappeared, demeanor changed. Reporting to Wang, he said: "I knew this. Your Spleen was initially diseased, overcome by Lung (Mother of Heart). Your suspicion weakened Heart Qi, causing hallucinations. Large pills fortified Spleen; small pills tonified Heart. Lung is Son of Spleen; unable to overcome Mother, disease healed spontaneously." (*Daoshan Qinggu*, unselected.)
Shen Cunzhong stated: "When serving as Inspector of Hebei, I suffered red eyes for forty days, dark red ulcers beside black pupils, painful day and night. Treatments failed. Official Qiu Ge asked: 'Do your ears itch?' If yes, it is Kidney Wind. Sisheng San treats Kidney Wind; two to three doses bring relief. Locals call it Holy Powder. I transmitted and took it. One dose afternoon, one dose bedtime. Eyes hurt severely. Slept at second watch. Woke with redness dispersing, pain gone. Three to four more doses brought full recovery. Scholar Sun Hefu, Governor of Zhenyang, heard this, rejoiced: 'I knew how to treat eyes. Previously, I saw Politician Lv Jifu suffer chronic eye disease. Taking Toubing Dan cured him.' Following this, I prepared one dose, took twenty to thirty doses, eyes healed. Thus, Toubing Dan also treats Kidney Wind." (Unselected.)
Gong Zicai treated a man with painful eyes. After taking Fire-descending and Wind-dispelling herbs, eyes turned crimson, severe heat/fatigue. Ten Complete Great Tonifying Decoction (Shiquan Dabu Tang) for several doses resolved symptoms. Later, Buzhong Yiqi Tang combined with Liuwei Dihuang Wan cured him. Recurrence of dryness/fatigue after labor responded again to Shiquan Dabu Tang.
Another patient with red/blurred eyes took Wind-dispelling/Heat-clearing herbs, worsening photophobia/hearing, pulse large/deficient. Due to mental overwork and irregular diet. Buzhong Yiqi Tang plus Fushen (Poria Cum Radix), Zaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) cured immediately. Relapse from labor required Shiquan Dabu Tang combined with previous herbs for cure.
Previously, with Ouyang Shubi, Chao Wujiu, and Zhang Wenqian at Jietan Temple. I suffered blurred vision, preparing to wash with hot water. Wenqian said: "Eyes forbid washing/pointing. Eye disease should be preserved; Tooth disease should be exercised." (Xiong Note: This is a subtle method for eye disease from *Lotus Sutra*. Meddling fools deserve blindness; do not be rigid.) Also recalled Luzhi saying: "Treating eyes is like governing people; treating teeth is like commanding troops. Govern people like Cao Can governed Qi; command troops like Shang Yang governed Qin." Reasonable, so recorded. (*Dongpo Zhilin*.)
Prime Minister Cui Shenyu inspected West Zhejiang. Left eye grew a polyp-like growth obscuring the pupil, causing extreme distress. Physicians failed. Tan Jian said: "Can be removed immediately, provided you remain calm and decisive." Cui agreed, keeping it secret from family. Tan added: "Must be done at noon on the ninth day, Jingming (BL1) acupoint, in a quiet place. If successful, no worries." Early month, cloudy/rainy on sixth/seventh day, Tan worried. Eighth/ninth day cleared. Asked about alcohol intake. Cui: "Small amount, but finished." Tan delighted. At North Tower, invited Cui to drink, sit quietly. Tan gently palpated the lesion: "Trivial matter." Felt pulling, bearable pain, sound of scissors. Moved to courtyard. Sound of combing. Used dyed cotton to wipe and apply medicine, pain minimal. Polyp size of child's finger, hard like tendon. Threw into river. Days later, imperial decree summoned Cui to high office. (From Tang Zhao's records.)
Wei Yuheng stated: "Old Man Jin, nearly seventy, suffered syncope (stroke-like). Post-recovery, blurred vision, gait instability. Someone taught Tribulus (Bajili) water-pills, four qian morning/evening. Dispels wind, brightens eyes, cheap/easy. After few days, bitter/dry mouth/throat. Continued, sudden blindness. Aggravated by anger, syncope recurred, eyes closed/speechless, sweating beads. Pulse scattered. Temporarily used Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) two liang, Gouqi (Lycii Fructus) one liang, decocted. Physician arrived, dared not prescribe, suggested adding Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata) one qian, arguing heavy Yin tonics need slight Yang support. I said: 'Externally, many use Shenfu Tang (Ginseng and Aconite Decoction), causing withered sinews/black skin, half-body death before person dies, due to劫 (robbery) of declining Yin.' (Xiong Note: True experience; I witnessed many.) This case is Triple Yin exhaustion, Five Emotions Fire flaming up, causing sudden syncope. Patient blinded by dryness of Tribulus; how dare add Fuzi? Physician left silently. Two herbs taken, spirit revived. Halved dose, added Shashen (Glehniae Radix), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Shayuan Jili (Astragali Complanati Semen). Cured. Took regularly, distinguished porcelain patterns after two years. Later changed physicians, died of unknown cause."
Lu Yuchuan, over sixty, chronic hypochondriac pain. Tried all aromatic penetrating ancient formulas. Later physician gave pills with Hubalu (Leguminosae Semen) as Sovereign, mostly Liver-subduing herbs. Pain temporarily relieved. Then one eye blinded, still blamed medicine. Second dose, both eyes damaged, pain worsened. Consulted, given large dose of Sheng/Shu Dihuang, Gouqi, Nu Zhen Zi (Ligustri Lucidi Fructus), Shashen, Maidong, Louren (Trichosanthis Semen). Cured after one dose. Realized previous medicines were wrong. However, Black Water Divine Light in eyes exhausted, unrecoverable.
Approximately twenty-year-old male patient. No other illness, but total blindness at sunset (Nyctalopia/Sparrow Blindness). Pulse: Left Guan large, Left Chi extremely minute. Asked: "Recently married?" Yes. Prescribed Shengdi, Gouqi, Niuxi, Ganju (Chrysanthemi Flos), Shashen, Maidong, Nu Zhen Zi. Four doses cured. Advised sexual moderation, else recurrence/disability.
Fang Maochun’s wife suffered aphonia. Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba) and Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), indispensable for contemporary aphonia treatment. Four doses, ignoring their aromatic/drying nature, caused red/swollen eyes with discharge blocking vision. Over a month, gradual blindness. Pulse: Both Cun overflowing, wiry/rapid. Added Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) to previous formula. Several doses cured. Nephew had same condition, but pupil everted, too late for medicine.
Xiaozhang Jiujing San (Eliminate Opacity Save Vision Powder): Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis) half qian, raw ground; Lingyangjiao (Saigae Tataricae Cornu) one qian; Caojueming (Cassiae Semen) one qian; Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) half qian; Bajili (Tribuli Fructus) one qian; Longdancao (Gentianae Radix) five fen, wine-charred; Ganju (Chrysanthemi Flos) eight fen; Muzeicao (Equiseti Herba) five fen; Hanfangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) one qian; Chongweizi (Leonuri Fructus) one qian. Two zhong water, decoct to eight fen. Take far from meals. Wang Jinshan said: "Caruncle on white sclera resembles fish bladder. World uses external cutting/hooking, not proper treatment. I formulated this using Shixie (Stone Crab) as Sovereign. Cold/Drying nature removes dampness, reduces caruncle, effective as drum-beat response. Excellent product. Assistant Lingyangjiao guides, extinguishes Liver Wind, disperses bad blood; Caojueming treats Qingmang (blindness), removes white membrane; Lianqiao clears guest heat, dissipates nodules, specifically drains Small/Large Intestine heat;"
