Lu Yangyu treated Shen Huanan, who originally suffered from damp-heat and phlegm accumulation. At age fifty, he fell from a horse, injuring his left hypochondrium with unbearable pain. A surgeon healed him with plaster and powder applications. However, whenever he ran fast, a slight pain occurred in the hypochondrium, ceasing after half an hour of rest. Around age sixty (Zhoujia), he accidentally developed dysentery. Lower abdominal pain radiated to the left hypochondrium, was intolerable to touch, and accompanied by tenesmus. Given Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), and Binglang (Arecae Semen), the dysentery stopped but pain persisted, with fever, dysuria, and worsened tenesmus; appetite was completely lost. Pulse diagnosis revealed deep, wiry, and forceful pulses, especially at the left Guan position. Lu said, "Pain is due to blood stasis." The treatment principle states: "Stagnant blood and foul matter in the lower jiao cause loss of appetite." Thus, indigestion is also due to stasis; urgent purgation is needed so that pain decreases with bowel movement. He used Runzi Wan combined with Tao Ren paste, administered with Honghua Tang (Safflower Decoction). Two qian were given, expelling about one bowl of thick phlegm, but abdominal and hypochondriac cramping worsened, indicating the stasis was stirred but not yet expelled. Another two qian were given; after half a day, another bowl of thick phlegm was expelled, containing one or two pieces of black mud-like material. Pain remained unchanged, pulse still deep and firm. Another three qian were given; after half a day, several bowls of mud-like pigment and thick phlegm were expelled. Pain suddenly decreased, abdomen and hypochondrium became palpable, appetite returned, and pulse became harmonious. Later, Daqi Yangrong Tang with added Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) was taken for several doses, stabilizing the condition.
Lu Xiaoyu (Lu Yangyu) treated Ning Jianyuan, nearly seventy years old, who fell into water while boarding a boat, injuring his thigh and causing pain radiating to the left hypochondrium. He had recovered for three months with medication. Suddenly, pain appeared in the left thigh near the Bitshu point. Some attributed it to Liver channel deficiency in the elderly; others to damp-phlegm migration, Liver stagnation, or Qi rebellion at Kunlun. Treatments for pain and swelling failed, worsening with chills and fever. Pulse was flooding and rapid in all positions, wiry at the left Guan. Asking about trauma, he recounted the fall. Lu said, "This must be residual blood stasis turning into toxin." Inspecting the painful area showed pus formation. He referred him to surgery, instructing needle lancing, which drained several bowls of pus and blood. Large doses of Shenqi Tuoli San (Ginseng and Astragalus Toxin-Expelling Powder) were taken for dozens of doses until recovery.
A man suffered persistent lower back pain after falling from a horse, worse at night than day, clearly due to blood stasis. Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) without Shengdi Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) was modified with Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Tao Ren (Persicae Semen), Honghua (Carthami Flos), and Sumu (Pterocarpus Indicus Lignum). After four doses, black blood was passed in stool, and he recovered.
In Huguang, a Hu family son injured his skull falling from height at age five or six, resulting in inability to straighten his body as he grew older. Zhu Shouzhen, a fellow townsman, jokingly lifted his head one day, producing a cracking sound, after which the boy died instantly. Zhu fled in fear. The boy revived shortly after, his neck straightening again. Upon returning home, his family was overjoyed and planned to thank Zhu. (From *Shuo Yi*.)
Zhang Zihe treated Zhang Zhongwen, who fell from a terrace about four chi high, injuring the Nao (perineal/genital area). His right lateral malleolus swelled with burning heat and pain. A physician wanted to lance the swelling to bleed it. Zhang stopped him, saying, "The Nao is already painful; adding needle puncture would cause double pain, which is unbearable." Instead, he prescribed Shenyou Wan (Divine Protection Pills), eighty to ninety pills, causing over twenty bowel movements. Hot foods were forbidden. By midnight, the swelling itched, pain ceased, and walking returned to normal. Zhang said, "My method cures ten out of ten; I do not deceive future generations."
An eight-year-old child had a broken knee causing pain when walking for months. Zhang said, "It is a minor illness." He used Zhouche Wan (Boat Cart Pills) and Tongjing San (Meridian-Unblocking Powder), mixed with warm wine. By midnight, vomiting and purging occurred simultaneously: one bowl vomited, half a jar purged. In bed, the child told his mother, "My kneecap itches unbearably." The next day, Wu Jin Wan (Black Gold Pills) was given to strengthen bones and tendons. After one month, the disease cured, and he could walk.
During Emperor Dezong's reign, a court official fell from a horse, injuring his foot. The Imperial Physician needled his leg, but the needle could not be withdrawn. Smoke-like Qi escaped, leaving the official exhausted and near death. The physician panicked. A Daoist arrived, saying, "I can treat this." Examining the needle site, he reprimanded the physician: "You acted too hastily. Life and death points differ by mere millimeters. Human vessels are like rivers; acupuncture requires understanding key junctions. You are skilled but missed the correct point." He ordered the bed moved forward and needled the Qi-full area on the left leg, predicting, "This needle will push the other out to the eaves board." Inserting the needle more than one cun, the stuck needle jumped out violently, reaching the eaves board. The wound closed smoothly, and the patient recovered instantly. The official and physician offered gold and silk, which the Daoist refused, drinking only a cup of tea before leaving. (From *Yi Shi*. Note: This serves as a lesson for acupuncturists.)
Dai Yaochen, Vice Magistrate of Shicheng, damaged his big toe testing a horse, bleeding profusely. He used a freshly broken scallion, heated in bran fire, peeled, and applied the sticky interior to the wound, replacing it frequently with hot ones. Alternatively, mashed scallion was applied. Pain stopped, and no scar remained the next day. Official Song Wei later used this formula successfully for many traumatic injuries where life was barely hanging on. (From *Bencao Gangmu*.)
Gong Zicai treated a man who fell from a horse, having intestinal blood stasis. After purgative treatment, he developed fever, night sweats, and spontaneous sweating with floating, choppy pulse. This resulted from heavy purgatives damaging Qi and Blood. Shiquan Dabu Tang (Comprehensive Great Tonifying Decoction) worsened the condition, causing delirium. This was due to insufficient medicinal power. Paojiang (Prepared Ginger Rhizome) and Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), five qian, were added to the previous prescription. Sleep followed, and upon waking, he felt relieved. Two more doses cured him.
Zhang Sanxi recalled seeing someone with persistent lower abdominal pain after kicking a door hard. Mismedication led to swollen, blue lower abdomen before death, revealing the true cause.
Sun Wen Yuan treated a man post-syphilitic sore who fell, dislocating the Huantiao point, unable to reduce, with severe pain and unequal leg length. Stasis filled the joint cavity, preventing bone reduction. Treatment focused on resolving stasis with Qi-moving and Blood-invigorating herbs, aided by descending guides. Ingredients included aged kiln bricks (four liang), Shengdi Huang (one tael five qian), Duniu Xi (one tael five qian), Gusuibu (one tael five qian), Danshen (one tael five qian), Chishao (one tael five qian), Ziran Tong (three liang), Puhuang (one tael), Cheqianzi (one tael), Sumu (one tael), Deer Antler (two liang), and Mingfan (five qian), all powdered. Mixed with a paste made from Mugonggen (Mugwort Root) and Honghua (Safflower), honey-pilled. Taken with wine on an empty stomach. Initially, the leg lengthened by two cun, leaving a half-cun difference. Continued use would have fully cured him, but the patient feared medicine and stopped midway.
Li Kezhai's family had a tame crane. When its tibia broke, Li asked for a bone-setting secret recipe. A man offered his family's formula using Tubiechong (Eupolyphaga), Cu Zhi (Copper Sulfate processed with vinegar), Ziran Tong, Ruxiang (Olibanum), Moyao (Myrrha), and Caiguazi (Vegetable Melon Seeds), powdered. One-and-a-half fen was given with wine. The crane's leg healed. For humans, take after meals for upper body injuries, fasting for lower body. Li shared this formula. (From *Xu Jinling Suoshi*.)
Zhang Sanxi noted that the Huihui Dan Yao for fractures in Nanjing, taken with melon seeds and wine, was highly effective. It primarily contained Tubiechong and Ziran Tong, differing only in refinement.
Wu Ying, Military Governor of Sichuan, shared a secret formula for severe trauma. Even if near death, if breath remains, immediate administration restores consciousness. In Fujian, he treated a soldier killed in a fight; only heart warmth remained. Medication was forced down. Crackling sounds were heard in the chest; soon, eyes opened, asking for food. He walked the next day. The formula uses wild chrysanthemum leaves and stems dried in shade, decocted with fresh urine and unfiltered wine. Another recipe uses a downy chick ground with bone and Wujia Pi (Acanthopanacis Cortex) applied to wounds for miraculous bone setting. (From *Juyi Lu*.)
Feng Chuzhan, at fifty, was crushed by a falling tree between the waist and spine. Spine dislocated, pain like being cut in half, chest bone moving, waist purple, lower body cold, head sweating profusely. Remembering the rule "a thread of blood entering the heart causes death," he drank scallion juice mixed with wine and fresh urine. This caused extreme cold below the navel and rebellious Qi. Realizing the need to secure Yang Qi urgently, he took Renshen (one liang), Chao Baizhu (six qian), and Zhi Fuzi (three qian), twice daily. A surgeon suggested blood-breaking herbs, but Feng insisted on tonifying Qi and Blood for lower injuries. He used Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill) with Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex), and Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus). Due to right kidney and spine injury, ancestral Qi lacked root, causing insomnia and muteness. Any speech or sleep triggered rebellious Qi. Strong medicine helped stabilize him. Dry cakes were eaten to suppress Qi, digesting easily. Bowel movement occurred on the eighth day without stasis. Externally, pig fat with human hair was melted, mixed with Shiquan Dabu Tang modification, Ruxiang, and Moyao, applied to wounds. After seven days, Qi rebellion eased; after half a month, sleep and speech returned; after one month, sitting up; after two months, walking with a cane. The spine protruded half an inch, becoming chronic. Energy declined, knees and ankles ached. Fortunately, bold treatment saved his life.
Li Nangong, magistrate of Changsha, judged a fight where A claimed injury by B. Pinching revealed B's bruises were real, A's fake. A southern tree leaf painted skin to mimic bruises; peeling bark and ironing doubled the effect, resistant to washing. Li knew real bruises are hard from blood aggregation, fakes are not. (From Sima Guang's *Susui Jiwen*.)
Hua Nanyan, during a thorn bush incident, saw a man with facial lacerations and near-skull fracture, dying. Feeling pity, Hua prepared his own wound medicine, instructed staff to keep the patient warm and wind-free, and arrested the attacker while releasing others. Explaining to friends, he reasoned that saving one life prevents multiple families from being destroyed by legal entanglements and vengeance. The patient recovered, ending the lawsuit. The wound medicine formula: Scallion juice mixed with calcined stone, formed into cakes, dried, and applied to stop bleeding and heal even broken bones. (From *Bencao Gangmu* context implied).
Han Yifeng, acting magistrate of Yongning, found a beaten man dead overnight. Noting the deceased's poor elderly parents, he needled Baihui (GV20) as a last hope. In cold weather, villagers warmed the corpse with clothes and hot water rubbing. After fourteen needles, throat sounds and faint breath appeared. Pulse moved. At twenty-one needles, loud sounds emerged, limbs moved, and the man complained of pain. Wine and medicine were given, wounds dressed, painful spots needled. The attacker was ordered to care for him under penalty. The man recovered, leading to reconciliation.
Xue Lizhai treated a man with head and arm injuries from a fall. Scallions were mashed, heated, applied, and massaged with hot hands. Jiangsheng Dan (Holy Descending Pills) powder was taken. *Bencao* states scallions greatly treat trauma.
Yizi San (One Character Powder) treats all blunt trauma and fractures. Zhao Shugong's father fell from a cliff while drunk. Arm broken, unconscious. Treated with this powder, he recovered and resumed hammering. Formula: Wulingzhi (Trogopteri Dung), Moyao, Chuan Wutou, Cao Wutou (peeled, raw), Dilong (Earthworm), Ruxiang, Shexiang (Musk), Bai Jiaoxiang. Powdered, taken with warm wine. Take after meals for upper body, before meals for lower. Numbness indicates efficacy. (From *Baibai Fang*.)
A prisoner in Changle County, severely beaten, requested Hu Sun Jiang (likely a local herb), juiced, decocted with wine, and residue applied to wounds. Recovered in days. (Same source).
Monk Chuan from Lingquan Temple treated trauma using ancient half-liang coins. Quenched repeatedly in wine and vinegar until rust dissolved. Washed, dried, powdered. Mixed with Ruxiang, Moyao, and Shuizhi (Leech). Taken with ginger juice and warm wine. If no fracture, it causes vomiting; if fractured, it passes through, forming golden-wire-like structures in stool, proving efficacy. Avoid alcohol for three days. Liu Liangxian noted Wang Xiang's bone-setting powder using half-liang coins, likely the same formula. (Same source).
For persistent swelling and pain from trauma: Fresh ginger juice, rice vinegar, and ox hide glue are boiled together, mixed with Mapibo (likely a plant powder). Applied as a plaster. Effective in Shaoxing. (Same source).
Liang Yansi, envoy to Fujian, could not walk. Doctors treated for wind or gout without success. Xiang Yanzhang diagnosed a subluxation ("bone not in place") and cured it with massage. (From *Jiulingshanfang Ji*.)
Dili Mixi, Secretary of Nantai, had a wrist injury with palm reversal for six months. Doctors failed. Knowing Baoyi Weng mastered massage, he sought help. Strong men rubbed him from morning to afternoon until muscles softened. The palm was kneaded with a cracking sound. Within two months, function returned. (Same source).
