Pulse: The Renying (ST9) pulse and the Cun position of the right hand pulse present as floating, large, and slow. The Guan and Chi positions of both hands present as floating, slow, and choppy. *Mai Jue* (Classic of Pulses) states: "The pulse of wind-stroke is yang-floating and slow, yin-soft and weak."
Symptoms: Aversion to wind. It is also said that wind-strike causes aversion to wind, which is logically inevitable. This is because wind pathogen easily injures Wei Qi (Defensive Qi), which belongs to Yang Qi. When the wind pathogen lodges in the body, it causes the Cou Li (pores and interstices) to become loose, failing to provide protective functions, thus resulting in spontaneous sweating and aversion to wind. External symptoms include: headache, heat in the limbs, cough, nasal congestion with heavy voice, or runny clear nasal discharge, or nasal obstruction unable to smell odors; these are all manifestations of wind-strike.
Treatment: Generally, wind-strike mostly involves the Lung organ. The treatment method must focus on releasing the exterior, clearing heat, descending Qi, and resolving phlegm. Initially, use herbs for releasing the exterior and clearing heat, such as Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Cong Bai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus), Zi Su Ye (Perillae Folium), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), and Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix). Subsequently, use herbs for resolving phlegm and stopping cough, such as Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Bei Mu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus), Kuan Dong Hua (Farfarae Flos), and Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix). If there is sweating accompanied by aversion to cold, along with stiffness and pain in the head and neck, Gui Zhi Ge Gen Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Kudzu Root Decoction) is the primary formula. If there is no sweating, restlessness persists, and there are no exterior syndrome signs, Shuang Jie San (Double Resolution Powder) is the primary formula.
