The Fourteenth Difficulty of *Nan Jing* states: "When the Spleen is damaged, regulate its diet and adapt to cold and warmth." It further says: "The Spleen, Stomach, Large Intestine, Small Intestine, Sanjiao (Triple Burner), and Bladder are the foundation of granaries, the residence of Ying (Nutritive) Qi, termed 'vessels,' capable of transforming dregs and excreting flavors." Regarding diet, heat should not be scorching, and cold should not be chilling; when cold and warmth are moderate, Zheng Qi (Upright Qi) will be maintained, preventing pathogenic deviations. If there is dietary irregularity or improper temperature regulation, resulting diseases may include unceasing loose stools, epigastric fullness and oppression, abdominal and hypochondriac distension, loss of taste in the mouth, and fatigue in the four limbs. All these are caused by damage to the Spleen and Stomach. The intestines and stomach are like a market, accepting and admitting all things. If any of the Wind, Cold, Summerheat, Dampness, Dryness, or Fire pathogens becomes excessive, it can also damage the Spleen and Stomach. Those who prescribe medicine based on syndrome differentiation must examine carefully.
