[Muxiang San (Costus Powder)]
Indicated for extreme cold in the Zang-Fu organs and chronic cold injury leading to exhaustion, oral ulcers accompanied by diarrhea, undigested food in stool, loss of taste, emaciation, irritability, and postpartum conditions...
Muxiang (Costi Radix), Poguozhi (Burmese Dodder Seed/Gao Li Jiang is listed but context implies Bu Gu Zhi/Burmannia Root or Psoralea Fructus often associated with "Poguozhi", here translated as Psoraleae Fructus based on standard alias), Gaoliangjiang (Galangal Rhizome), Sharen (Amomum Fruit), Nongpu (Magnolia Bark, processed with ginger juice, 3 fen each), Chishao (Red Peony Root), Chenjuhong (Aged Tangerine Peel), Rougui (Cinnamon Bark), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, half liang each).
The above are ground into a powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Use about 4 liang of pig liver from a sow that has not yet menstruated, remove the fascia, slice thinly, and layer the powder onto the slices. Place in a vessel, add one bowl of jiangshui (fermented rice water) and a small amount of vinegar (approx. one tea-foot volume). Cover and boil until the liver is cooked. Add 1 qian of salt, three finely chopped scallion whites, and one piece of ginger the size of a bullet (crushed). Continue boiling until the liquid is nearly exhausted. Consume cold as a single dose on an empty stomach. Mild diarrhea upon initial intake is acceptable; this indicates the expulsion of cold qi from the lower body and will cease shortly. For chronic cold-type dysentery and slippery diarrhea, this single dose is sufficient. If thirsty, take with porridge soup. Avoid raw, cold, and greasy foods. If unable to consume cold items, add a small amount of jiangshui and take warm. In *Zhang Jianfu Zhifang*, it is recorded that Zhang Jianfu suffered from chronic diarrhea. When invited to a meal, he declined citing illness. The host said, "I have a good medicine, one dose will cure you." He boiled the medicine and summoned him. Upon arrival, Zhang... [text fragment] ...was weary of the complexity. Instead, only jiangshui was used to boil pig liver into pills, sized like sophora seeds. Take 50 pills per dose with porridge drink; the efficacy is the same. For acute diarrhea, only one dose is needed. It is contraindicated for heat-dysentery and heat-diarrhea. My family treasures this prescription greatly; it is truly remarkable, incomparable to other remedies.
[Sha Jian Wan (Sand-Boiled Pills)]
Indicated for all types of stagnation, promoting qi transformation and digestion, tonifying true qi. For postpartum expulsion of lochia (stagnant blood) and excellent benefit for deficiency damage.
Sha (Talcum, 1 liang, select transparent pieces without stone impurities, grind separately into powder), Boshang Huixiang (Fennel Fruit, 1 liang, lightly stir-fried), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root, 1 liang, soak overnight in non-ash wine, remove radix tip, slice thinly and dry), Jinlingzi (Chloranthus Fruit/Sweet Olive, 3 liang washed and broken, 4 liang soaked overnight in non-ash wine, when soft scrape out pulp with knife, discard peel and seeds), Rousourong (Cistanche Stem, 1 liang, soak overnight in non-ash wine, slice thinly and dry), Chuanxin Bajie (Morinda Officinalis Root, 1 liang, soak overnight in non-ash wine, remove heart/core), Tianxiong (Aconitum Carmichaelii Lateral Root Preparatum, 1 liang, boil in non-ash wine for 500-700 boils until soft, scrape off skin), Binglang (Areca Seed, 1 liang), Muxiang (Costus Root), Chenxiang (Aquilaria Wood), Heifuzi (Prepared Aconite Root, each...)
Grind into fine powder. Use non-ash wine to cook white wheat flour paste to form pills, sized like sophora seeds. Take 30 pills per dose. On an empty stomach, at midday, take with warm wine. This formula is common in every household. My wife once suffered from dysentery during the puerperium, becoming severely debilitated over time, unresponsive to various treatments. Scholar Li Qian, skilled in medicine, said: "Puerperal dysentery differs from ordinary dysentery. Ordinary dysentery can be stopped with astringent herbs, but puerperal dysentery arises from blood deficiency. Using astringents will further obstruct blood flow, worsening the dysentery. Please prepare the Sha Jian Wan method for me." It is said this medicine indeed treats postpartum dysentery. First administer Gui Xiao Wan (Cinnamon Small Pills), then administer Sha Jian Wan. Take 90 pills daily; the dysentery halved immediately and resolved the next day. Even if no disease exists postpartum, Sha Jian Wan is suitable for consumption, as it nourishes blood and removes stagnation. The Gui Wan formula is attached below.
Sha (Ground), Rougui (Cinnamon Bark), Gansui (Kansui Root), Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos), Muxiang (Costus Root), Yuanhua (Genkwa Flos, stir-fried with vinegar until scorched), Badou (Crotonis Fructus, remove heart and peel but retain oil)
Process equal parts by pounding. Form pills with wheat flour paste, sized like small mung beans. Take 2-3 pills per dose with warm water, adjusting dosage according to deficiency or excess. Li Qian was a renowned physician who stated that this pill is superior for resolving stagnation, effective regardless of duration.
