[Ju Danxi] In treating diseases related to pregnancy and childbirth, one should reason from the Jueyin Meridian (Jueyin Channel), without violating Stomach Qi (Stomach Energy) and the Upper Sanjiao (Triple Burner). This is called the "Three Prohibitions": do not induce sweating, do not purge downward, and do not promote urination. Inducing sweating leads to a condition similar to premature purgation in Cold Damage (Shanghan); promoting bowel movements causes rapid pulse and disturbs the Spleen; promoting urination leads to loss of body fluids internally and dryness in the Stomach. The principle of preparing medicines is: if these three prohibitions are not violated, Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi) will harmonize naturally, and chills and fever will cease. If thirst occurs, use Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction); if Qi is weak, use Huangqi (Astragalus Root); if there is stabbing pain in the blood with a harmonious quality, add Danggui (Angelica Sinensis); if there is abdominal pain, add Shaoyao (Peony Root). Generally speaking, for postpartum conditions caused by epidemic pathogens, modify Chaihu Tang (Bupleurum Decoction); for miscellaneous diseases, modify Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction). One should carefully observe the pulse and symptoms before using them. In general, externally harmonize Ying and Wei, internally regulate bowel movements and urination, and treat it as a complicated syndrome resulting from mishandled Cold Damage.
[Li Zhongnan] For pre-partum diseases, one should only focus on calming the fetus and smoothing Qi. If external contraction of Wind, Cold, Summerheat, or Dampness, or internal injury from Joy, Anger, Worry, Thought, Sorrow, Fear, or Fright leads to other diseases, the treatment methods are no different from those for men; one should seek remedies within the respective disease categories. However, when treating other conditions during pregnancy, one must carefully examine and verify any agents that might disturb the fetus.
[Ju Danxi] During pregnancy, one should clear heat and nourish blood. For calming the fetus before delivery, Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) and Huangqin (Scutellaria Baicalensis Root) are excellent herbs. One month before delivery, take Sanbu Wan (Three Tonics Pill) added with fried Xiangfu (Cyperus Rotundus Rhizome) and fried Shaoyao (Peony Root), formed into pills with steamed wheat cake dough. To suppress heat, use Sanbu Pill made into pills with Shengdihuang Paste (Powdered Huangqin, Huanglian, and Huangbai mixed with Shengdihuang Paste). At eight or nine months of pregnancy, one must smooth Qi using Zhiqiao (Aurantii Fructus) and Sujing (Perillae Caulis). When reaching eight or nine months, if fire agitates the fetus causing rebellious Qi and wheezing urgency, use Tiaohuangqin (Premium Scutellaria) and Xiangfu powdered and taken with water. Select Tiaohuangqin that sinks in water, indicating density. To secure the fetus: use Dihuang (Rehmannia Root) half qian, Danggui Shenwei (Angelica Sinensis Root tip and tail), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Shaoyao (Peony Root), and Chenpi (Citrus Reticulata Peel) each one qian, Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) one and a half qian, Gancao (Licorice Root) three fen, Huangqin (Scutellaria Baicalensis Root) and Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome) half qian each, Huanglian (Coptis Chinensis Rhizome) and fried Huangbo (Phellodendron Amurense Bark) a small amount, Sangshangyangerteng (Honeysuckle Stem growing on Mulberry, i.e., Honeysuckle Flower) seven complete leaves, and fourteen glutinous rice grains; chop and decoct for administration. For blood deficiency causing insecurity, use Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin). For pain, use Suosha (Amomum Villosum Fruit) because it moves blood and Qi.
*Yijian Zhi* records: During the Zhenghe era, the granddaughter-in-law of Duke Cai Lu fell ill at term. Imperial physicians believed it was Yang-pattern Cold Damage and feared fetal expulsion, so they dared not administer cooling agents. Zhang Rui arrived, examined her, and said, "The fetus has been in the womb for ten months and is about to be born; what medicine could ruin it?" He immediately prescribed standard medication and instructed doubling the dose. Half a day later, the child was born, and the illness disappeared. The next day, the woman suffered severe diarrhea and throat closure preventing food intake. Other doctors criticized his error again, saying, "These two ailments are like ice and charcoal; furthermore, she has just given birth. Even a master of life would have no remedy." Zhang Rui said, "Do not worry; I will cure her today." He took dozens of pills and had her swallow them. Her throat opened immediately, and the diarrhea stopped. At the full month celebration, Duke Lu poured wine to toast him, saying, "Your skills are divine. I dare not ask how, but may I ask how one medicine cured two ailments?" Zhang Rui replied, "This is not recorded in the classics; I acted according to my judgment. The medicine used previously was Fuzi Lizhong Wan (Aconite and Poria Decocting Pill) wrapped in Zixue (Purple Snow). At that time, the throat was blocked; only extreme cold medicines could work. Once swallowed, Zixue dissipated completely; what reached the abdomen was the power of Fuzi (Aconite Lateral Root). Thus, one dose cured both ailments." The Duke was greatly amazed.
Wang Ji treated a woman who had experienced transverse and breech deliveries seven or eight times, with all children failing to survive. Wang Ji's pulse diagnosis revealed fine, choppy, and slightly wiry pulses. He said, "This is a dual deficiency of Qi and Blood accompanied by Heat." Someone asked, "If Qi and Blood are sufficient, pregnancy can form; if Qi and Blood are deficient, how can the fetus survive?" Wang Ji said, "Her long and thin physique with fine and soggy pulses indicates dual deficiency of Qi and Blood. Her bluish complexion and wiry pulse indicate frequent flaring of Liver Fire. The floating and slippery pulses at the Chi position suggest that Blood deficiency is lighter while Qi deficiency is heavier. It is appropriate to use Buyin Wan (Nourish Yin Pill), removing Chenpi (Citrus Reticulata Peel), and doubling the dosage of Xiangfu (Cyperus Rotundus Rhizome), Renshen (Ginseng Root), and Huangqi (Astragalus Root). Form into honeyed pills and take continuously. After a year, she delivered smoothly and bore a son.
Baosheng Wan (from *Ju Fang*) nourishes the fetus and benefits blood, calming and harmonizing the Zi Zang (Uterus). It treats improper management during pregnancy, or fetal movement and insecurity due to labor/overexertion, heavy pain in the lower back and abdomen, placental obstruction and leaking fetus, intermittent lochia, uterine pathology preventing conception, or failure to maintain pregnancy leading to atrophy, dryness, failure to grow, passing the due date without delivery, full term but lack of strength to move, potentially causing miscarriage. It also treats inappropriate timing during labor, premature excitement, lochia appearing before labor begins, dry placenta leading to difficult labor, transverse or breech presentation, extreme pain and confusion, prolonged labor without delivery, dead fetus in the uterus, cold abdomen, blue-black lips, and vomiting of cold foam. It treats postpartum evil blood rushing upward causing fainting and unconsciousness, panting and sweating, incomplete expulsion of stasis, umbilical and abdominal pain, alternating chills and fever. It treats damage from labor, lingering emaciation, sallow complexion, thin body, palpitations, night sweats, poor appetite, gradually developing into Chulao (Postpartum Consumption). Taken monthly, it strengthens Qi, nourishes the fetus, regulates labor, moistens the fetus for easy delivery. Taken postpartum, it nourishes blood and Qi, harmonizes Yin and Yang, tightens Cou Li (pores/skin texture), solidifies Zang-Fu organs, treats Wind-Deficiency, and removes chronic cold.

Using young boy's urine is best for regular use; if it causes nausea, mix with half wine. For pregnant women near term, taking one dose daily until delivery results in no pain perception. Taking five to ten doses increases appetite daily due to medicinal power; its merits cannot be fully described.
Longxu Tang Treats body pain before and after delivery. *Baoshi Lun* states: Body pain occurs when the body is deficient and receives Wind-Evil, lodging in the meridians. Evil Qi battles Righteous Qi, clashing between bone and flesh, causing body pain and immobility. Longxu Tang is the primary treatment. If pregnancy involves body pain, it is likely due to excessive labor. Otherwise, for Wind-Cold invading meridians, Yutong Wan (Pain Relief Pill) or Fangfeng Tang (Saposhnikovia Decoction) are primary treatments. For postpartum body pain and immobility due to labor, it is because after birth, the joints open, blood vessels flow freely, and weak Qi causes blood stagnation between bone and flesh. Thus, joint meridians become tense, the lower back cannot turn, hands and feet cannot move, body heat feels like swallowing charcoal, head feels like nails driving in. Unaware physicians mistakenly induce sweating for Cold Damage, generating other syndromes. This prescription is suitable.
Huangqi (Astragalus Root, 1 liang, honey-roasted) Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root, de-rhizome, wine-soaked) Niuxi (Achyranthes Root, wash off sprouts, wine-soak overnight; if urgent, steam熟 in wine) Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root, de-rhizome) Du Huo (Angelica Pubescens Root, de-rhizome) Gancao (Licorice Root, each 2.5 qian)

Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome, 2 liang) Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root, 3 liang)
Grind into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, with 1 cup of water and 0.2 parts wine. Decoct to 0.7 parts, take warm. Another method uses coarse powder, 4 qian per dose, 0.7 parts water, 0.3 parts wine, decoct to 0.7 parts, take hot. Arrange this medicine before delivery; prepare two doses. After delivery, administer quickly. Twice daily for three days, once daily thereafter. Another name is Xiong Gui Tang (Cyperi et Angelicae Decoction), consisting of these two ingredients in equal parts, chopped and decocted in water. Specifically treats blood loss injuring the fetus, postpartum blood loss, metrorrhagia, traumatic bleeding, dental extraction bleeding that won't stop, excessive blood loss from any cause, mental restlessness, vertigo, fainting and unconsciousness, heavy head, dim vision, feeling of falling. It treats all these. For postpartum vertigo, add Shaoyao (Peony Root). Another name is Guixiang San (Cinnamon and Cyperus Powder), treating unbearable postpartum abdominal pain; add Rougui (Cinnamon Bark) in equal parts, decoct with wine and young boy's urine for immediate effect. Another name is Dang Gui Tang (Angelica Decoction), treating dead fetus in pregnancy or fetal movement insecurity; decoct with wine and water, take several doses. If the fetus is dead, it expels it. If alive, it calms it. This has proven effective repeatedly, never failing. Another name is Hupo San (Amber Powder), taken near term to shrink the fetus for easy delivery and treat postpartum ailments. Another name is Yangrou Tang (Mutton Decoction), treating deficiency and emaciation, abdominal pain, alternating chills and fever, shortness of breath, inability to support oneself, dizziness, spontaneous sweating, abdominal tension. Take 1 liang of lean mutton, 10 slices of fresh Ginger, 2 cups of water, decoct to 0.6 parts, take warm. Another name is Jun Chen San (Ruler and Minister Powder), treating Heart and Abdominal pain in unmarried women, irregular menstruation; decoct in water. For pregnant women with insecure fetal Qi or postpartum ailments, add wine. Another name is Xiong Dang San (Cyperi et Angelicae Powder), treating Women's Blood and Qi disorders, upper asthma and lower edema. Grind two ingredients equally into fine powder, take 2 qian on an empty stomach with mugwort tea. Also treats postpartum body damage, Blood rushing to the Heart, abdominal distension with Qi blockage; highly effective. For difficult transverse delivery or dead fetus in uterus, first fry 1 he of Black Soybeans until cooked, add 1 cup of water and 1 cup of young boy's urine, 4 qian of powder, decoct to 1 cup, divide into two doses. Repeat if ineffective. For postpartum evil blood rushing to the Heart causing confusion, panting, urgent abdominal pain, use Black Soybeans plus half he of fresh Ginger Juice decocted and taken. For Zang Du (Visceral Toxicity), take 1.5 qian, add 0.5 qian of fried Sophora Flower powder, 1 cup of water, decoct to 0.6 parts, take anytime; blood clots expelled in three days cures it. For postpartum headache, add Jingjie (Schizonepeta Spike) and decoct; also suitable for hematemesis. For difficult labor, use Baicaoshuang (Charred Grass Ash) and Xiangbaizhi (Aucklandiae Radix) in equal parts, powdered, named Wu Jin San (Black Gold Powder). Take 2 qian with 1 he each of young boy's urine and good vinegar, soak in boiling water and drink. One dose shows effect; severe cases require a second dose for delivery. Another method uses Wuji San (Five Accumulations Powder) decocted with vinegar to induce labor. For metrorrhagia and spotting, excessive blood loss unable to stop for a long time, if Xiong Gui Tang fails, use Xiangfu (Cyperus Rotundus Rhizome) fried, peeled, powdered. Add 1 qian of Gancao (Licorice Root) powder per 1 liang of Xiangfu powder, mix with clear rice water and take, named Shun Yuan Tang (Smooth Origin Soup). For white leukorrhea, add 0.5 liang of Shaoyao (Peony Root) to Shun Yuan Tang. Some say Xiangfu consumes Qi, but this is incorrect. Scholar Xu stated it nourishes blood and tonifies Qi, a fairy medicine for women, suitable even for the emaciated. It also treats vomiting and epistaxis in men and women, loose stools, and blood loss from various syndromes. Use this medicine with rice water to form pills with Baicaoshuang powder, take over 100 pills, or other ash medicines are effective. Do not abruptly stop bleeding with drying/astringent agents, as this causes stagnation and corruption, generating other syndromes. Generally, if Blood cannot move, it is due to Qi. When Qi is balanced, Blood follows its proper path, avoiding reckless movement. Xiangfu excels at guiding Qi; use it without doubt.
Fanhun Dan Treats critical conditions of various diseases before and after delivery in women.
Use Chi Jian (Wild Gastrodia Elata Rhizome/Tianma), whose leaves resemble Mugwort, opening purple flowers like Red Smartweed. 1. Dead fetus in uterus: Likely due to sudden organ heat steaming the fetus. The dead fetus does not remain in the uterus; signs include cold pain in the abdomen, frothy urine, abdominal distension, cold extremities, and blue nails. Or at delivery, this medicine calms the Soul and Spirit, harmonizes Qi and Blood, prevents disease, breaks blood, tonifies deficiency, stops pain, nourishes Qi and Blood, regulates meridians; take with half wine and half young boy's urine.
2. Difficult labor: The fetus feeds on maternal blood for ten months; remaining blood forms a mass, commonly called 'Child Pillow'. At delivery, the blood mass moves first, wrapping the fetus in bad blood, causing difficulty. Or postpartum, incomplete expulsion of evil matter causes stabbing abdominal pain and rushing to Heart/Chest causing oppression; take with half young boy's urine and half wine.
3. Dirty face, flushed complexion, retained placenta: After delivery, organs are deficient, Five Hearts are vexatious, blood flows into the placenta making it hard to exit, causing chills, fever, and cold sweat. Expelling the bad blood allows the placenta to exit naturally, like a severed belt. Take this medicine. Or transverse difficult delivery, Heart oppression nearing death; take with half young boy's urine and half wine; fresh Mint Juice or salt water is also suitable.
4. Three days postpartum, unable to rise or lie down, visual darkness and spots: Postpartum Qi and Blood are unsettled, circulating through the Five Zang. Entering the Liver causes dim vision, commonly called Dark Wind, treated by physicians as Wind. Or Blood Heat causing dry mouth, vexatious thirst, Heart oppression resembling hallucinations, mania, unconsciousness; take with half young boy's urine and half wine; fresh Mint Juice is also suitable.
5. Postpartum dry mouth, Heart oppression, and vexatious thirst: Qi and Blood unsettled, eating hot noodles causes stagnation, leading to heat, restlessness, and thirst, commonly called Chest-Diaphragm Fullness. Or bilateral temporal headache, yawning, palpitations, shortness of breath, emaciation, loss of appetite, Blood-Wind body heat, numbness, severe joint pain; take with half warm rice water and half young boy's urine.
6. Postpartum limb edema and chills/fever: Due to bad blood flowing into Five Zang, seeping into limbs, staying long, turning to pus. Panting, difficult urination, cough, chest discomfort, nausea, vomiting sour water, hypochondriac pain, weakness; dissolve in warm wine.
7. Postpartum alternating chills and fever: Due to bad blood entering the Heart causing heat, entering the Spleen causing cold, resembling malaria, affecting the abdomen...
