Crush *Portulaca oleracea* (Purslane) with a mortar and pestle, drink the juice, and apply the dregs to the affected area. Additionally, apply raw sesame oil (*Sesamum indicum*) to the lesion. Alternatively, boil soybeans (*Glycine max*) in concentrated water and apply the decoction.
The *Yingru Fang* (Infant and Child Formulas) prescribes a formula for Dan Du (Erysipelas) entering the abdomen or spreading downwards to the scrotum (which is considered incurable):
*Cinnamomi Ramulus* (Guizhi, 桂枝) [Note: Text says Mahuang, corrected to match source text: *Ephedrae Herba* (Mahuang, 麻黄)] (stir-fried), *Cimicifugae Rhizoma* (Shengma, 升麻) (each 3 fen), *Natrii Nitras* (Xiaoshi, 硝石) (4 fen).
Grind the above ingredients into fine powder. Administer one *fangcunbi* (a square-inch measure) with well water (Jinghua Shui, 井花水) three times daily. Another version adds *Rhei Radix et Rhizoma* (Dahuang, 大黄) by half a fen.
The *Liu Family Heritage* treats Zoumatai (a rapidly progressing, severe form of erysipelas); if the toxin enters the heart and abdomen, it is fatal. Formula:
Fresh *Sophorae tonkinensis* leaves (one handful), fresh *Trichosanthis Fructus* (Gualou, 栝蒌) (peeled and pounded together with Sophora leaves), powder of red adzuki beans and white kidney beans (each 3 fen).
Mix evenly and apply to the affected area; the effect is miraculous.
Crush bamboo to extract juice, take one sheng (approx. 200ml) as a single dose; one or two doses are sufficient for efficacy.
Crush Chinese chives (*Allium tuberosum*), add some salt and sesame oil, rub with hands until warm, then wipe over the erysipelas lesion; immediate recovery ensues.
Treat all types of Dan Liu (erysipelas nodules).
Grind *Natrii Sulfas* (Tuxiao, 土硝) into powder, mix with ginger juice and vinegar, and apply; apply three to four times daily. (Tuxiao refers to the earthen casing of dung beetles or the nest of white grubs.) Five *Ricini Semen* (Bimazi, 蓖麻子), remove shells and grind finely, add one qian of wheat flour (*Triticum aestivum*), mix with water, and apply lightly; this is very effective. Crush *Sagittariae Sagittifoliae Rhizoma* (Cigu, 茨菰) leaves and stems with cold water, sweep onto the area with a chicken feather broom; swelling subsides immediately. Apply juice from *Huhucao* (Protect-fire herb). Apply juice from *Wuyecao* (Five-leaf herb). Mix *Rhei Radix et Rhizoma* (Dahuang, 大黄) powder with water and apply. Grind *Gardeniae Fructus* (Zhizi, 栀子) kernels with water and apply. Mix *Scutellariae Radix* (Huangqin, 黄芩) powder with water and apply. Grind *Fatsiae Fructus* (Suodao, 蒴藋) juice with water and apply. Mix house dust with lard (from the twelfth lunar month) and apply. Mix *Betulae Cortex* (Huapi, 桦皮) powder with oil and apply. Mix millet flour with saliva and apply. Grind glutinous rice juice with water and apply. Boil alum (*Baimingfan*, 白矾) powder in water and apply. Mix *Carthami Flos* (Honglanhua, 红蓝花) with vinegar and apply. Boil *Angelicae Dahuricae Radix* (Baizhi, 白芷) roots and leaves and apply. Pound carp meat until mushy and apply. Mix dried ginger (*Ganjiang*, 干姜) powder with honey and apply. Mix earthworm (*Dilong*, 地龙) feces with water and apply. Crush hemp seeds (*Dazima*, 大麻子) to extract juice and apply. Apply water used by lime-burners to wash their vats. Mix soil from leek beds with water and apply. Mix *Ulmus davidiana* root bark (*Yugenbaipi*, 榆根白皮) with egg white and apply. Apply mutton fat (*Yangzhi*, 羊脂) that has not touched water, after roasting, and cover with white powder. Apply juice from *Coriandrum sativum* (Huisu, 胡荽). Grind *Terminalia chebula* (Hezi, 诃子) with vinegar and apply. Crush *Acalypha australis* (Guimu, 鬼目) juice and apply. Crush perilla seeds (*Renzi*, 荏子) juice and apply. Grind fermented bean paste to extract juice and apply. Grind *Rehmanniae Radix* (Dihuang, 地黄) juice and apply. Grind bean leaf juice and apply. Grind *Sargassum* (Haizao, 海藻) juice and apply. Boil *Kadsura longipedunculata* (Shinan, 石楠) with wine and apply. Mix chicken manure with water and apply. Crush *Platycladus orientalis* bark and apply. Apply bitter juice. (Internal administration also recommended.) Crush garlic and apply. (Especially excellent for treating Wuse Dan / Five-colored Erysipelas.)
The *Qianjin Fang* states: Whenever eggs are used in formulas, only use those that have cracked first; others lack potency. It also states: Among all things in the world, algae (*Zao Cai*, 藻菜) is the coldest. For patients suffering from heat-induced swelling, toxic erysipelas, etc., take algae from canals, chop finely, cook and pound thoroughly, then apply to the erysipelas lesion to a thickness of about three fen; replace when dry. I argue against using this topical application. If the pathogenic factor is on the exterior, it may be addressed externally; however, suppressing it forcibly prevents external release, forcing the toxin inward. One must first administer internal medicine to support the healthy qi and expel toxins internally before applying such treatments.
