Newborn infants who have accumulated latent fetal heat and are about to develop erysipelas (Dan) will necessarily show external signs first, although people often fail to notice them. If an infant in the cradle produces thick purulent eye discharge without cause, this is a sign that erysipelas is about to erupt. If accompanied by slight panting and urgency, it indicates that the toxic qi has become severe and is ascending to invade the Lung. As soon as these symptoms are detected, one should urgently use Longnaoyin Zi (Dragon Brain Decoction) mixed with water, or herbs such as Banlangen (Isatis Root) and Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn), to secretly dissipate the toxicity. If red patches have already appeared all over the body, one should then apply Yuntaie (Rapeseed) externally to curb the momentum of the disease, treating it step-by-step according to its progression.
My family had two children who, at birth, had thick eye discharge, and both subsequently developed erysipelas. The granddaughter of He Zaiyi died at seven days old; she first had eye discharge, then a coin-sized red spot of Dan appeared below her lower abdomen, which gradually spread upward to her abdomen and heart. This situation must be known. Chu Yushi stated: "Erysipelas occurring within the first hundred days is fatal and untreatable," yet there are cases that can be treated, so treatment should not be neglected.
Generally, for pediatric cases of various Dan swellings, even if the pathogenic force is strong, one must absolutely avoid using drastic purgatives like Dahuang (Rhubarb Rhizome) and Mangxiao (Mirabilite) to forcefully purge the bowels. Doing so risks allowing the toxic qi to enter the interior due to deficiency, making the pathogen dominant and rendering treatment difficult. Instead, one should only use herbs with neutral properties that detoxify and support the interior, frequently regulating the Zang-Fu organs, and promoting mild bowel movement. This approach protects the Yuan Qi (Primordial Qi) while expelling external pathogens, thereby ensuring a high chance of complete recovery. For instance, the son of neighbor Tao suffered from erysipelas at six months of age. A physician used Qingjindan (Green Gold Pill) to purge him excessively, causing the toxin to sink into the interior, leading to panting and convulsions, and ultimately death. Infants have delicate skin and flesh, their conditions easily shift between deficiency and excess, and they cannot take large doses of medicine. Therefore, treatment must not be negligent, but also not hasty; it relies entirely on precise and dedicated nursing care to ensure safety. Laypeople generally do not understand this, so I record it comprehensively.
When pediatric erysipelas erupts, if one predicts that the pathogenic force will inevitably spread to weak areas such as the throat and neck, the abdomen and heart, or the genitals and sacrum, one should first apply medication to protect these areas. Additionally, one should use Bian Sha (Bian Stone) to puncture the leading edge of the spreading lesion, releasing a small amount of evil blood to drain the toxicity. Some suggest scraping away all the evil blood with a comb until clear yellow fluid appears, stopping only then. This method is suitable only for patients with critical condition but strong Zheng Qi (Upright Qi) and intense blood heat. Generally, susceptibility to this disease varies in severity; older children with robust constitution can tolerate it. However, for infants under one month old who have contracted a heavy toxin, this method should not be applied universally. Zhang Kangdao, Vice Magistrate of Wuwei, had a two-year-old son who suffered from Huoyan Dan (Flame Erysipelas). A physician in Lu performed Bian Sha therapy, draining over a cup of evil blood, and the child died two days later. This must be known. The *Bencao* states: "For erysipelas in adults and children, it is advisable to eat Crucian Carp (Jiyu) and Shui Mu (Water Mother, commonly known as Jellyfish)." However, one should not indulge in eating them just because they are recommended, as doing so may cause harm. Since Crucian Carp is also a type of fish, is it not also unsuitable?
