According to the *Shenghui Fang*: All types of Dan (erysipelas) in infants and children are caused by wind-toxin residing in the couli (interstitial spaces between skin and muscle), where heat-toxin contends with blood, steaming outward. This results in hot, red skin resembling cinnabar, hence the name "Dan." If the condition persists, muscles may rot and decay. If the toxic qi enters the abdomen, it can be fatal. Currently, a single formula is used to treat all types of Dan, thus it is called "Yiqie Dan" (All-encompassing Dan).
The song in *Yingtong Baojian* regarding various Dan toxins in children states: When Dan fire first forms, it resembles burning; Tianhuo (Heaven Fire) causes the whole body to turn red and expand; Yifanghuo appears as blue-black on the arms; Li Dan originates from the forehead; Dan toxin on the buttocks and anus encircles like a belt with violent redness; Liuhuo worsens daily with unpredictable changes and five-color markings; Jiahuo connects the cheeks, axillae, and breasts; Tianzao occurs at the medial malleolus and perineum; Feidan (Flying Dan) presents with redness on the back and knees; Nizaodan is summoned from the inner thighs, umbilicus, and genitals. Chao Yuanfang stated: The Huodan syndrome involves symptoms alternating like Taiyang disease (common cold/flu), with redness spreading over the body and enlarging daily. He also noted: In Danhou syndrome, the onset is red like fire, with blisters appearing within moments. The *Yingru Fang* stated: Huodan presents with symptoms alternating like Taiyang disease and body redness; it is not named after thermal burns but resembles the rising sun, named according to location, also called Ridan. It is suitable to use Loulu San from the *Qianjin Fang*. Zeng Shi stated: Red-purple Dan tumors arise from internal depression of Heart Fire, appearing red like cinnabar. The Heart governs blood, and fire nature is hot; when blood-heat contends, yin stagnates in yang, causing Dan toxin. Heart deficiency-cold causes itching, while Heart excess-heat causes pain. Cases originating from the abdomen and spreading to the limbs are easy to treat; those originating from the limbs and entering the abdomen are difficult to cure. First, use Baijie San to release the exterior, then use Danggui San added with Lqiaoqiao and Jingjie, decocted in water. Also, Niubang Tang added with fried Hemp Seed (Hemaziren) crushed and decocted together, to vent heat and extract toxins. Next, use Chige San, or initially use Huadan Tang. When erupting on the body, similar to the above syndromes, without severe dryness or itching, but with floating rashes all over, mental confusion, and irritability, it is named Yinshi Du Zheng (Yin-Damp Toxic Syndrome). First, use Chonghe Yin added with Nanmuxiang and fresh ginger, decocted in water; subsequently, use Danggui San and Xionghuang San. However, regardless of whether these two syndromes are red or white, if the toxin enters the abdomen or kidneys, it often causes harm and should not be treated lightly as ordinary conditions, lest one bring upon oneself distress. Tang Shi stated: Pediatric Dan toxin is due to extreme heat-toxin contending with blood, with wind exploiting it, causing redness, swelling, and wandering across the body, also known as Chiyou Feng (Red Wandering Wind). If it enters the kidneys or abdomen, it is fatal. Generally, although there are many types of Dan toxin, the pathological source is the same. Those with widespread red Dan toxin and itching, or girls aged fifteen or sixteen with unopened meridians prone to Dan rashes, are all caused by wind-toxin in the blood. They are suitable for Fangji San.
