When infants and children present with epilepsy (epilepsy), convulsions (convulsive disorders), or dizziness, moxibustion is applied to the Shenting (Shenting, GV24) acupoint. One point, 7 moxa cones. The location is directly above the nasal bridge, entering the hairline by 0.5 cun.
For various types of epilepsy in infants and children, such as hiccups or vomiting clear froth, moxibustion is applied to the Jueque (Jueque, CV14) acupoint. Three moxa cones. The location is 1 cun below the Jiwei (Jiwei, CV15) acupoint, in the depression.
For "chicken epilepsy" in infants and children, characterized by susceptibility to fright, blinking, and head shaking, moxibustion is applied to the Shaoyin (Shaoyin, HT7) acupoint. Two moxa cones. The method for locating this point is in the depression 0.5 cun from the wrist crease on the palmar side.
For "fright epilepsy" in infants and children, which begins with a cry of fright before onset, moxibustion is applied to the center of the whorl of hair on the vertex, 3 moxa cones, and also to the blue collateral vessels behind the ears. The moxa cone should be the size of a wheat grain.
For "fright epilepsy," moxibustion is applied to the Guilu (Guilu, CV23) acupoint. One point, 3 moxa cones. The method for locating this point is on the upper lip interior, above the central frenulum line.
For "food-induced epilepsy" in infants and children, which begins with chills and shivering before onset, moxibustion is applied 0.5 cun above the Jiwei (Jiwei, CV15) acupoint. Three moxa cones.
For "cow epilepsy" in infants and children, characterized by staring straight ahead and abdominal distension before onset, moxibustion is applied to the Jiwei (Jiwei, CV15) acupoint. One point, 3 moxa cones. The method for locating this point is in the depression 0.5 cun below the xiphoid process (sternal ensiform cartilage).
For "horse epilepsy" in infants and children, characterized by an open mouth, head shaking, body arching backward, and neighing sounds, moxibustion is applied to the Puxen (Puxen, BL60) acupoint. Three moxa cones on each side. The method for locating this point is in the depression at the junction of white and black skin below the calcaneus (heel bone); the foot should be arched to locate it.
For "sheep epilepsy" in infants and children, characterized by wide-open eyes, tongue protrusion, and bleating sounds, moxibustion is applied to the interspace below the ninth thoracic vertebra. Three to five moxa cones.
Note: The *Ling Shu* states: For sudden spasm where the feet cannot support the body, select the Tianzhu (Tianzhu, BL10) acupoint. Tianzhu belongs to the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian. It also states: For epilepsy with spasms, where the patient does not know their suffering, select below the two Qiao vessels; for males, select the Yang Qiao; for females, the Yin Qiao. Jiegu (Zhang Yuansu) stated: If attacks occur during the day, moxa the Yang Qiao vessel; if at night, moxa the Yin Qiao vessel. Apply 2 moxa cones to each. The Yang Qiao vessel originates in the middle of the heel, ascends along the medial malleolus to the throat, and intersects with the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel); this corresponds to the Zhaohai (Zhaohai, KI6) acupoint.
[Qian Yi] Severe cases of the five types of epilepsy result in death; those who become worse after the illness also die. In infantile epilepsy, the following signs indicate untreatable conditions: eyes staring straight without sound, fixed gaze without movement, white opacity forming on the eyes, slow eyelids with black lips, pupillary flickering, cyanosis around the eyes, greenish face with black fingers, saliva resembling white pus, locked jaw with abdominal distension and refusal to nurse, sawing sound in the throat with excessive sleepiness and refusal to nurse, fever with hematochezia and refusal to nurse, flaccid body with unconsciousness, hollow rumbling in the abdomen, cold and painful lips, continuous vomiting and diarrhea, profuse sweating with unremitting high fever, inability to sleep despite lying down for a long time, opisthotonos (body arching backward). If one hand can fit under the spine of an adult, or one finger can fit under the spine of a child, these are all considered untreatable.
