Chao Yuanfang stated: Children have weak Shenqi (vital spirit and qi), with slight deficiency in Jingyang (essence and vitality). Consequently, their Hun and Po (ethereal and corporeal souls) are possessed by Gui (ghostly/pathogenic influences). The manifestations include: not feeling other obvious ailments, but presenting with sallow complexion (Wei Huang), frequent loud crying, and persistent foul breath. The song "Gui Chi Ge" (Song of Ghost Possession) in *Ying Tong Bao Jian* states: "Children's qi is weak and destiny declines, their hun and po are often possessed by ghosts; the signs are sallow complexion and much crying on the ground, no need for medicine, seek a master." The "Gui Qi Ge" (Song of Ghost Qi) states: "Ghost qi resides in the skin, transmitted between organs; swelling resembles water disease, spasms resemble convulsions; fever makes the whole body dry and stiff, heart cramps and pain gather; children also suffer this, medication must be viewed urgently."
The formula from *Tu Jing* to treat Gui Chi: Use tiger eyes, tiger claws, and finger bone hairs tied to the child's arm to ward off evil ghosts.
Wuxie Wan (Five Evils Pill) from *Waitai Miyao · Shenshi Fang*: Treats evil madness, ghostly bewitchment, delirious speech, wild running, confusion, and inability to recognize people. This is considered Gui Wu (ghost collision); one should use the Shagui Wan (Ghost-Killing Pill) formula.
Ingredients: Cinnabar (Dan Sha), Realgar (Xiong Huang) (each separately ground), Dragon Bone (Long Gu), Muming Dugong (a mineral drug), Aralia elata branch (Gui Jian), Typhonium rhizome (Gui Jiu) (each 5 liang), Adzuki bean (Chi Xiao Dou) (3 liang), Mylabris (Yan Qing) (1 piece), Peach kernel (Tao Ren) (100 pieces, peeled, tip removed, roasted, separately ground).
Process these nine ingredients: crush, sieve, mix all medicines through fine silk gauze, stir until uniform, then add melted wax to form pills the size of a bullet. Store in a crimson pouch, tie to the arm—left for males, right for females, head for infants. Do not let women or chickens/dogs see the preparation. For administration, mix honey to form pills the size of a wu zi (seed of Chinese parasol tree). Take 3 pills per dose, three times daily. Avoid five pungent spices and raw blood products.
(Shi Zhu, Gu Zhu)
Chao Yuanfang stated: "Zhu" implies staying or lingering, referring to wind pathogens and ghost qi remaining inside the human body. Regardless of age, if blood and qi are deficient and declining, yin and yang lose their guardianship, allowing wind pathogens and ghost qi to invade and lodge between muscles, extending into the viscera. Symptoms may include skin twitching and wandering unpredictability, stabbing pain in the heart and abdomen, or body heat and skin swelling. The condition becomes stagnant and fatal; after death, it transmits to others, hence named "Zhu". Children cannot withstand wind pathogens; illness often arises because the nursing mother, during postpartum recovery, fails to avoid temperature changes, summer heat, or dampness, or due to carrying the child out early and late. The child's hun and po are weak and injured by ghost qi, resulting in disease.
Formula from *Qianjin Fang* to treat pediatric Zhu: Mix ash from the stove and salt in equal proportions, heat, and apply as a hot compress (moxibustion-like therapy).
Taiyi Beiji San (Great One Emergency Powder) from *Qianjin Fang*: Mainly treats sudden onset of evil guest qi, Wushi (Five Corpses) entering the abdomen, Guici (ghost piercing) and Guife (ghost paralysis), as well as poisoning from Gu Zhu, hematemesis, hematochezia, sudden heart/abdominal pain, abdominal fullness, and Yin Du (yin toxicity) syndrome of Shanghan (Cold Damage) after six or seven days.
Ingredients: Realgar (Xiong Huang), Genkwa flower (Yuan Hua), Cassia twig (Gui Xin) (each 2 liang), Cinnabar (Dan Sha), Sichuan pepper (Shu Jiao) (each 1 liang), Veratrum (Li Lu), Croton seed (Ba Dou) (each 1 fen), Prepared Aconite root (Fu Zi) (roasted, peel and navel removed, 5 fen), Gelsemium (Ye Ge) (3 fen).
Process these nine ingredients: Process Ba Dou separately into a paste. Mix the remaining herbs, grind, and sieve. Combine with the Ba Dou paste, pound until uniform, and store tightly in a copper vessel to prevent leakage. For emergencies, administer orally with water, starting with a dose of "one zi bi" (size of a sesame seed on a spoon), increasing up to "half qian bi". Reduce dosage for elderly and children. If pain is in the head, epistaxis occurs; if above the diaphragm, vomiting occurs; if below the diaphragm, diarrhea occurs; if in the limbs, sweating occurs. This effect is like pouring boiling water on snow, healing instantly under hand. Keep secret; do not transmit to the unvirtuous.
Formula from *Qianjin Fang* to treat contagious Zhu, Huoluan (cholera-like disorder) with evil qi, and prolonged Ke Wu (guest fright) in children:
Ingredients: Hyena liver (Ta Gan) (1 piece), Realgar (Xiong Huang), Polygonum arvense (Mang Cao), Cinnabar (Dan Sha), Typhonium rhizome (Gui Jiu), Rhinoceros horn (Xi Jiao), Croton seed (Ba Dou) (each 1 liang), Musk (She Xiang) (2 fen), Rhubarb (Da Huang), Bovine calculus (Niu Huang) (each 1 liang), Centipede (Wu Gong) (1 strip).
Process these eleven ingredients into powder, mix with honey to make pills. Take on an empty stomach, starting with two pills the size of hemp seeds, increasing to three pills, stopping when efficacy is achieved.
