A scholar suffered from illness due to prolonged stress from imperial examinations after intense study. He experienced hematemesis and epistaxis filling basins, extreme emaciation with visible bones, and upon closing his eyes for sleep, dreamed of battles and defeat, experiencing indescribable terror. This persisted for ten years. It flared up with fatigue. Physicians administered herbs for nourishing the heart and calming the spirit, but to no avail. One day, reading *Su Wen: Lun Zang Qi Fa Shi Lun* (Treatise on the Methods and Times of Organ Functions in the Basic Questions), he realized that the Hun (Ethereal Soul) resides in the Liver, and the Liver stores blood. Since writing was arduous and excessive bleeding occurred, the Hun lost its nourishment; thus, closing eyes induced dream disturbances akin to demonic oppression. This indicated Liver deficiency and Gallbladder timidity, causing feelings of failure and fear. Only a potent tonic could achieve efficacy, whereas ordinary herbal medicines were insufficient. Therefore, he consumed Lu Jiao Jiao (Cervi Cornus Colla) dissolved in wine on an empty stomach. After five days, his sleep stabilized; after half a month, muscle mass returned; after one month, his Shen (Spirit) was at peace, allowing him to leave his room. This is because Lu Jiao Jiao strongly tonifies Essence and Blood; when Blood is abundant, the Spirit naturally calms.
