Tao Hongjing stated: "Yuanyi" (moss growing on walls) is also called Wujiu, but its therapeutic effects differ; it is not of this species. The *Tang Bencao* commentary notes: "This substance is Shiyi (stone moss), also called Shi Tai (stone lichen), and another name is Shi Fa. It grows in dark, sunless places on rocks, resembling Juanbai." Currently, according to Chen Cangqi's *Bencao*: "Wujiu, when burned to ash and used for washing hair, turns it black. It grows in shady places between large stones and trees, appearing lush and green like moss but not being true moss." Ministers Yu Xi et al., respectfully citing Ri Hua Zi: "Shiyi is astringent, cold, and toxic. Yuanyi serves as a guiding herb; when burned to ash and used for washing the head, it promotes hair growth. This refers to the moss growing on mountain rocks in damp, shady places, which can grow four or five cun long, and is also called Wujiu. Su Song considered the name 'Shitai' incorrect."
It primarily treats heart pain and blood bi (Xin Tong Xue Bi), various diseases of the face, and facilitates the distribution of medicinal potency. It grows in Shu Commandery. It is harvested in the third lunar month.
Tao Hongjing stated: "This drug is said to originate from Rui, but the supply from Rui has been cut off for a long time, and genuine specimens are no longer available in common practice. Nowadays, people produce imitations to offer for use." The *Tang Bencao* commentary notes: "This drug originally came from Goryeo, but now it is produced west of Liangzhou. Its shape resembles Tianxiong. The *Shennong Bencao Jing* records it as originating from Shu Commandery, but it is no longer found there. Those from Liangzhou grow in sand, with a single stem resembling Schizonepeta (Shuweicao), and leaves growing among the spikes." Ministers Yu Xi et al., respectfully citing the *Shu Bencao*: "It is sweet and pungent, warm in nature. Furthermore, the *Tujing* states: 'Leaves are fine and surround the stem, growing among the spikes, emerging from wet ground under sandy deserts.' Ri Hua Zi stated: 'Non-toxic. It treats wind-stroke with loss of voice, all types of cold wind pathogenic factors, facial scars and blemishes. For medicinal use, it must be processed (Pao). Specimens from Silla are superior.'"
The *Haiyao Bencao* states: "According to the *Nanzhou Ji*, it grows in the East Sea and in Silla. The seedling resembles Fuzi (Aconite Root). It is greatly warming and slightly toxic. It primarily treats scabies and tinea (Jie Xuan), wind sores (Feng Chuang), facial scars, dampness under the scrotum, weakness in the legs, and various wind-cold pathogenic factors. It is beneficial when added to facial cosmetics (Mianzhi)."
