Ingesting it causes one not to feel hungry and promotes longevity, beautifying the complexion. It can be used when a person is in urgent distress or trapped in isolation, similar to how turtles and snakes achieve immortality by ingesting Qi (vital energy). Yanglingzi
Mingjing stated: In spring, consume morning dew at dawn; this is the Qi of the east before sunrise. In autumn, consume flying springs (flowing water) at sunset; this is the Qi of the west after sunset. In winter, consume hangxie (nighttime mist/dew); this is the Qi of the north at midnight. In summer, consume zhengyang (midday sunlight Qi); this is the Qi of the south at noon. These are combined with the Qi of Tianxuan Dihuang, forming the "Six Qis." Another view holds that pingming (daybreak) is morning dew, rizhong is zhengyang, riru is feiquan, yeban is hangxie, along with Tiandi Xuanhuang, constituting the Six Qis. All of these enable one to remain without hunger, extend life, and avoid disease. A person fell into a cave containing snakes, which consumed Qi daily in this manner. Upon seeing the snake's behavior, the person imitated the snake according to the seasons, consuming it when hungry. Continuing to mimic the snake daily, gradual efficacy was observed over time; the body became light and vigorous, seemingly capable of levitation. After Jingzhe (Awakening of Insects), both the person and the snake leaped out of the cave simultaneously.
Washes sores and scabies, eliminates scars. When added to sauce, it makes food cook easily; if it stains clothes, it causes rotting. Washing dirt off with it is like using lye ash water, differing from other waters. South of the Jianghuai region, the terrain is low and damp, especially severe from early to late May. The *Yueling* (Monthly Ordinances) states that "earth moist and muggy heat" occurs during the middle Qi of May. After this solar term, books must be sun-dried. Cui Shi of the Han Dynasty sun-dried books on the Qixi Festival; Ruan Xian could not escape custom, referring to this practice. Plum stains on clothes can only be removed with plum leaf decoction; others cannot be removed.
Sweet flavor, neutral nature, non-toxic. Primarily treats epigastric and abdominal pain, zhuwu (wandering pestilence), ghostly Qi, and evil filth. One should face a spring and drink it on an empty stomach. During times of peace and prosperity, liquan (sweet springs) gush forth. Ancient histories record much about this water; newly drawn water is considered best. For stopping heat-induced thirst, regurgitation, abdominal pain, and cholera-ruin, it is superior.
Sweet flavor, neutral nature, non-toxic. Primarily treats various heat syndromes in the chest and diaphragm, brightens the eyes, and stops thirst. Grows in the remote regions of Baxi, resembling maltose. Emperor Wu of Han established golden pillars and made cactus-shaped dew-catching plates to collect dew from the clouds, ingesting it to seek immortality.
Cold nature, non-toxic. Tuan shi zhe (a specific form/preparation): primarily resolves alcohol-induced heat, nasal congestion due to Shanghan (cold damage), and facial redness with various heats after drinking alcohol.
