[Background Information]
Book Title: Zhenglei Bencao (Compendium of Materia Medica Classified by Category)
Author: Tang Shenwei
Dynasty: Song Dynasty
Chapter: Volume II / Preface Part 2 (1/5)
Category: Materia Medica
[Jiyou Addition: Yan Yi Commentary]
Respectfully, regarding the various medicines: although a single herb may treat multiple diseases, its nature and properties also have specific biases. When prescribing formulas, this may lead to confusion or doubt. Furthermore, there is concern that when used singly in clinical practice for urgent situations, they are hastily collected without thorough research. Therefore, it is appropriate to list the names of herbs indicated for specific disease sources under their respective categories, so that treatment can be readily applied here; if one wishes to search specifically, it is also easy to understand. The sweet and bitter tastes may be omitted as they are easily known whether toxic or non-toxic; only the cold and hot natures must be clearly distinguished. Now, based on the *Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing* (Divine Farmer's Materia Medica) and the *Ben Cao Jing Jiu Zhu* (Old Annotations of the Materia Medica), annotations are added below each entry. For those unsuitable for decoctions or wines, and those suitable for them, these are also listed subsequently. (Upon detailed examination, the *Tang Bencao* uses red dots for hot nature, black dots for cold nature, and no dots for neutral nature, but there are many discrepancies; now, under each herb, annotations are made according to the *Ben Cao Jing* and *Bie Lu*.)
Under the black cover and additional additions by Tang Shenwei:
