Magnolia Officinalis (Houpu, 厚朴) [Note: Text refers to Mulan/Magnolia bark]
Taste: Bitter. Nature: Cold. Toxicity: Non-toxic. Indications: Primarily treats severe heat accumulated in the skin; removes facial redness and rosacea-like conditions (facial heat and redness associated with alcohol); treats aversion to wind, epilepsy, and damp itching in the genital area; clarifies the eyes and ears; treats wind-stroke and cold damage (Shanghan), as well as carbuncles, sores, edema, and eliminates foul odors. Alternative names: Linlan (Forest Orchid), Duluan. The bark resembles Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi) but has a different fragrance. It grows in the valleys of Lingling and Mount Tai. The bark is harvested in the twelfth lunar month and dried in the shade.
Tao Hongjing stated: It is found everywhere in Lingling. Its appearance resembles Nanmu tree (Phoebe zhennan), with very thin bark that tastes pungent and fragrant. Currently, the bark produced in Yizhou is thicker, resembling Magnolia Bark (Houpi) in shape, but superior in aroma. People in the East currently use Shan Guipi (Mountain Cinnamon Bark) as a substitute, which is also similar. It is also good for Daoist incense blending. The Commentary of Tang Bencao states: Magnolia leaves resemble those of Jun Gui (Cassia aromatic leaf), but its pungent and fragrant quality is inferior to Cinnamon. Ministers Yuxi et al., according to the Shu Ben Tu Jing, state: The tree is several zhang high, leaves resemble Jun Gui leaves, with three longitudinal veins, and the bark...
The Tu Jing states: Magnolia grows in the valleys of Lingling and Mount Tai, and is now found in various prefectures such as Hu, Ling, Shu, and Chuan. The tree reaches several zhang in height, leaves resemble Jun Gui leaves, also possessing three longitudinal veins. The bark resembles Ban Gui (Board Cinnamon), with transverse and longitudinal textures, and its fragrance is inferior to Cinnamon. This is completely distinct from Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig). However, the variety produced in Shaozhou is said to be the same species as Cinnamon. The outer bark is taken as Mulan, while the inner bark is taken as Guixin (Cinnamon Heart). It is likely a specific type within the Cinnamon genus. Harvested in the eleventh and twelfth lunar months, dried in the shade for use. Ren Fang's Shuyi Ji states: Mulan River, located in the Xunyang River, abounds with Magnolia. Additionally, there is a Mulan Boat carved by Lu Ban in Qili Islet, which remains there to this day. The "Mulan Boat" mentioned by modern poets originates from here.
Waitai Miyao records a formula for treating facial conditions: One jin (approx. 500g) of Magnolia Bark, finely chopped, soaked in three-year-old vinegar slurry for one hundred days. Remove, dry in the sun, and grind into powder. Take one cunshi (approx. 5-10g) with grain water, three times daily. Zimu Bilu records a treatment for pediatric macroglossia (double tongue): A piece of Magnolia Bark one chi long and four cun wide, scrape off the rough outer bark, soak in one sheng (approx. 200ml) of vinegar to extract the juice, and apply specifically onto the tongue.
