According to Chen Cangqi: It grows in valleys by the sea, and is of a herbaceous nature. Its taste is cold, and it is non-toxic. It primarily treats epidemic febrile diseases (Tianxing Shiqi), and pathogenic influences from ghosts or evil spirits.
It is suitable for burning as incense. Alternatively, it can be decocted in water; it is effective for washing edema and floating qi. When decocted with earth ginger (Di Jiang) and mustard seeds (Jie Zi) for bathing, it effectively treats wind-malaria (Feng Nue).
According to Chen Shi: It grows in Lingnan and the mountains of the South Sea. Each stem has thirty roots, resembling Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma). Its taste is bitter, its nature is neutral, and it is non-toxic. It primarily treats toxic carbuncles and ulcers (Dujie), with miraculous efficacy. The specimens from Zhongzhou and Wanzhou are superior. The herbal stems have similar efficacy and can be taken orally after decoction in water. Because toxins are prevalent in Lingnan, every household stores this herb.
According to "Guangzhou Ji": It grows in the valleys of southern Guangxi. It has pods about two chi long, containing thin flakes like paper, sized like cicada wings, which treat evil pathogens. Children wear one piece in a crimson silk pouch on their arm to ward off evil and calm fright. This herb grows in the south, hence the name "Nanbei Zi" (North-South Character). People today often mistakenly write it as "Nannv Zi" (Male-Female Character), which is incorrect. "Yinan Cao" refers to Hemerocallis citrina (Daylily). The above twenty-five types are supplements by Chen Cangqi.
Its taste is pungent, and its nature is warm. It treats ghostly qi, removes foul odors, and prevents insect/fish damage. It grows in Pengcheng. The plant is several chi high with white flowers. "Erya" states: "Che, KT (pronounced Qi) Yu." Guo Pu's commentary notes: "It is an aromatic herb." "Guangzhi" states: "Yellow leaves and white flowers."
Marine Medicines section: According to "Guangzhi": It grows in valleys in Hainan. Chen Shi states: It grows in Xuzhou. It is slightly cold and non-toxic. It treats cholera-like disorders (Huoluan) and wards off evil qi; it is excellent for fumigating clothes. "Qimin Yaoshu" states: For trees infested by insects, decoct this aromatic herb, cool it, and pour it over the tree; it effectively prevents borer damage.
It treats malignant sores, ulcers, scabies, carbuncles, and ant bites. It also addresses dry eyes. Grind into powder and mix with raw oil for topical application. It grows in manure-rich places, with a head resembling a brush, purple in color, emerging in the morning and dying by evening. Children call it "Gou Ni Tai," also known as "Gui Bi Jun" (Ghost Pen Mushroom). Those emerging from the ground generally treat sores and scabies. Black fungi growing on cow dung are particularly good. Additionally, fungi that grow in layers on soil turned to ash after autumn rain are named "Xian Ren Mao" (Immortal Hat) and primarily treat blood disorders.
Its taste is bitter, its nature is neutral, and it is non-toxic. It treats heat-toxins, including venom from snakes, dogs, insects, and carbuncles. Its efficacy is the same as Chen Family White Medicine. The vines differ. In Enzhou, Lingnan, the root is harvested and dried in the shade.
Marine Medicines section: According to "Guangzhou Ji": It grows in Lingnan and coastal areas. The vines resemble Di Gua (Benincasa hispida var. chieh-qua), and the roots are similar. Its taste is pungent, its nature is warm, and it is non-toxic. It treats all types of toxic vapors and snakebites. The root is ground and ingested. For any poisoning, it induces vomiting to expel the toxins.
