Wuyi (Melia Toosendan Fruit)
Pungent in flavor, neutral in nature, non-toxic. Primarily treats pathogenic qi within the five zang organs; disperses toxic pathogens characterized by a lingering, warm sensation in the skin and joints; eliminates three types of intestinal parasites; promotes digestion; expels *Taenia saginata* (Ascaris/roundworm); and dissipates wheezing in the intestines. Also known as Wugu, or Dian-Tang. Grows in the mountains and valleys of Jin region. Fruits are harvested in the third lunar month and dried in the shade.
Tao Hongjing stated: Currently, it is only produced in Goryeo. It resembles elm pods, has an odor similar to Xin, and locals use it to make sauce. Its property is insecticidal; placing it among items also prevents moth damage, though people worry about its strong smell. The *Tang Bencao* annotation states: *Erya* says Wuyi is also named KT, but the current name is [character error]. Those from Yanzhou and Tongzhou are considered the best. Current annotations state that Wuyi is found everywhere in Hedong and Hexi. Moreover, the *Shennong Bencao Jing* states it grows in the mountains and valleys of Jin, whereas Tao Hongjing believed it came only from Goryeo, likely due to ignorance of its true origin. Minister Yuxi et al. respectfully cite *Erya · Shimu*: "Wugu, its fruit is Yi." The annotation explains: "Wugu is Gu-yu (a type of elm). It grows in mountains, has round and dense leaves. The bark is peeled, soaked together, and tastes pungent and fragrant; this is what is called Wuyi." *Yaoxing Lun* states: Wuyi, used as an assistant drug, tastes bitter and pungent. It can primarily treat accumulated cold qi, abdominal masses and pain, remove wind pathogens from muscles and joints causing sensations like insects crawling. Meng Shen said: It treats pathogenic qi in the five zang organs, skin, and limbs. For hot sores, crush and mix with lard for application, which leads to healing. Mixed with white honey, it treats damp tinea; mixed with sand cow yogurt, it treats all kinds of sores. Aged material is superior. It can be consumed in small amounts; excessive consumption causes fever and heart pain due to its pungency. Consuming it in autumn is particularly suitable. Long-term consumption treats five types of hemorrhoids and prevents various diseases.
Ri Hua Zi stated: It treats intestinal wind hemorrhoids, malignant sores, scabies, and tinea.
*Tujing* stated: Wuyi grows in the mountains and valleys of Jin; it is now also found along nearby routes. Generally, it is similar to elm but slightly smaller, and its fruits mature early. This elm is larger, with an odor like Xin. *Erya · Shimu* states: "Wugu, its fruit is Yi." Guo Pu said: "Wugu is Gu-yu. It grows in mountains, has round and dense leaves. The bark is peeled, soaked together, and tastes pungent and fragrant; this is what is called Wuyi." *Erya · Shicao* states: "Ti, KT." The annotation says: "Also named Bai Kui," which is similar to one of the names in the *Benjing* (Dian-Tang). Su Gong said: "KT is a character error." However, Ti is a grass category, while Wuyi is a tree category; clearly, they are two different things. Perhaps their aromatic properties are similar? Fruits are harvested in the third lunar month and dried in the shade. It is frequently used in insecticidal prescriptions. Nowadays, people often take it, crush it into powder, and use it to season food; aged material is preferred. People store it, often pickling it with salt, which loses its aroma; such material is unsuitable for medicinal use and can only be used as food. It is especially suitable for consumption after autumn. *Xu Chuanxin Fang* treats chronic spleen and stomach qi leakage without cessation. Take five liang of Wuyi, crush into powder, and form pills with rice paste. Take thirty pills each time on an empty stomach before lunch, using aged rice water for delivery, increasing to forty pills. Long-term use removes the Three Corpses (parasitic entities), benefits the spirit, and preserves youthfulness. It was obtained from Zhang Liao and proved effective.
Chen Cangqi stated: Used to make sauce. Treats five types of Ji disease (pediatric malnutrition syndromes), removes sores and tinea. Material with a mutton-like odor is good. This is the kernel of wild elm. Haiyao: Respectfully citing *Guangzhou Ji*, it grows in Daqin (Persia/Rome) and is Persian Wuyi. Pungent in flavor, warm in nature, non-toxic. Treats cold dysentery, heart qi stagnation, kills insects, relieves pain, and treats uterine wind deficiency in women and pediatric gan diarrhea. Combined with Chebula Fructus (Hezi) and Cardamom Seed (Doukou), it is effective. Shiliao: Disperses abdominal qi pain; combined with horse yogurt, it treats tinea. Making sauce is very fragrant and delicious, with efficacy surpassing that of elm kernels. Aged material is good. It also kills sudden evil虫毒 (toxic pathogens). *Waitai Miyao*: Treats bladder qi urgency, promoting the downward movement of qi. Crush Wuyi, mix with equal parts of salt powder, wrap in cotton like a date size, insert into the lower orifice (anus/vagina), or it will discharge foul fluids and move qi downward, which is excellent. *Qianjin Fang*: Primarily treats worms in the spleen and stomach; pain occurs upon eating; complexion is yellow and lusterless; pain is intermittent. The Bixiao formula uses two liang of Wuyi kernels from Shizhou, stir-fried with flour until yellow, ground into powder. Take two qianbi doses mixed with rice water at non-meal times, leading to recovery.
*Yanyi* stated: There are two types of Wuyi: large and small. Small Wuyi is the elm pod. The kernel is extracted and fermented into sauce, which is particularly pungent. For medicinal use, the Large Wuyi should be used, which is a distinct species. However, small Wuyi fermentation often involves mixing with external substances, so careful selection and removal are necessary. It is indispensable for treating cold slipperiness of the large intestine and excessive cold qi.
