(Chi Chi Feng / Red-winged Bee) Has slight toxicity. Primarily treats spider bites, as well as Ding sores (hard, deep-seated boils), abscesses, and ulcerative sores. Burn it until black, mix with oil, and apply topically. Alternatively, take the soil from the bee nest, mix with vinegar to form a paste, and apply to the site of the spider bite; recovery is expected. It is found in Lingnan, resembles the earth bee, has red wings and a black head, digs burrows in the earth to build nests, and feeds on spiders. It is as large as a crab. It can sense the approach of bees from afar, and the bees anticipate its hiding place. They prey upon each other in this manner, leaving nothing behind.
The method of use is the same as mentioned previously. (Shan Qiong Chong / Mountain Centipede-like Insect) Resembles a small bee, is black in color, and has only one leg. It attaches to tree roots and cannot be removed; it does not move. Harvested in the fifth month, found in Lingnan. There is also a "one-legged ant" (Du Jiao Yi), which has the same efficacy as the Shan Qiong Chong. It also attaches beneath tree roots but can tremble; it is found in Lingnan.
(Hai Zhe / Jellyfish) Salty in flavor, non-toxic. Primarily treats Qi deficiency, women's consumptive disorders, accumulated blood, leukorrhea, pediatric wind diseases, and erysipelas. For burns caused by boiling water or fire, administer with ginger and vinegar. People from coastal regions also consume it as a common food. Also known as Shui Mu (Water Mother) or Chu Pu Yu. It lives in the East Sea, is blood-red in color, large specimens are as big as a bed, small ones as big as a bucket. It lacks an abdomen, stomach, eyes, and vision; it uses shrimp as its eyes. When the shrimp moves, it sinks, hence the name Shui Mu. The relationship between the shrimp's eyes and the jellyfish is akin to mutual borrowing. (Pronunciation: Chu Jia Qie).
(Chuan Shi Gui Zhu Chong / Parasitic Worm for Consumption Disease) Has slight toxicity. Primarily treats Chuan Shi Gui Zhu (a chronic wasting disease attributed to ghosts/pathogens). It resembles a night-crawling insect but is smaller; it should not be used lightly.
(Dian Xiao / Ground Beetle type) Toxic. Primarily treats all types of Ding sores, abscesses with bone erosion, old flesh tags, and tumors. Burn it into powder, mix with lard from the twelfth lunar month, and apply topically. It can also be formulated into ointments with other herbs to treat Ding sores by extracting them from the root. It resembles a spider and digs burrows in the soil. *Erya* states: Die (pronounced Die) Yi (pronounced Dang). Guo Pu’s commentary notes: It is the ground beetle. There is a lid above the burrow that covers the entrance. Currently called Dian Xiao Chong; people in Hebei call it Yi, pronounced Zhi Tang. It is found everywhere. Cui Zhiti’s formula states: It is superior for treating Ding sores.
(Ma Lu / Millipede) Has great toxicity. Primarily treats excessive alcohol consumption. Take one segment, burn it to ash, and swallow with water. After ingestion, the patient will no longer desire the smell of alcohol. Consuming more than one segment can be fatal to humans. This is used to treat alcoholism. It also treats silkworms dying white and stiff; take the insect, burn it to ash/powder. Burn it until black and apply to malignant sores. It is black-spotted, two to three cun long, lives in forests, resembles a centipede but is larger. There are even larger ones, finger-thick, named Ma Lu, capable of climbing trees and gathering to make sounds. Already recorded in *Ben Cao Jing*.
