The taste is pungent, the nature is warm, and it is non-toxic. It primarily treats carbuncles and swellings (Yongzhong), foul sores (Echuang), and necrotic tissue (Simu); wind-damp bi syndrome caused by cold-dampness; flaccidity and inability to control the limbs (Sijian juhuan bu shou); swelling and qi stagnation in the head due to wind pathogen; it unblocks the couli (pores and interstices) and softens the skin. It should not come into contact with the genitalia, as it may cause impotence (Wei). Another name is Guanzhi. (It fears Dahuang, Rhizoma Rhei.)
Minister Yuxi and others respectfully cite Meng Shen: "Deer meat (Miroccus albirostris meat) benefits Qi and tonifies the middle jiao, treating soreness and weakness of the waist and legs. It should not be eaten together with pheasant meat. Respectfully, the meat itself has no special medicinal efficacy; its nourishment for the five zang organs is slight and insufficient to tonify Qi. Excessive consumption weakens sexual function and induces jiaogixie (beriberi/foot disease). The bone is excellent for eliminating deficiency-wasting conditions (Xulao). One can boil the bones to extract juice, brew wine with it, and drink it; this makes one plump, white-complexioned, and beautiful."
The horn tastes sweet and is non-toxic. It treats bi syndrome, stops bleeding, and benefits Qi and strength. It grows in the valleys of Mount Nan and along the Huai River coast. It is harvested in the tenth month.
Tao Hongjing says: "Currently, it is most abundant in Hailing, forming herds of thousands, mostly female and few male. People say that one male mates with over ten females, and dies immediately after mating. Its fat falls into the soil; after a year, if obtained by humans: it is good, named Dunzhi, and taken with wine, it is very effective. Considering the nature of the deer is so lustful, it should not cause human genital impotence. Another theory states: saying it should not approach the genitals, causing them not to become flaccid, this has reason. Deer meat should not be eaten with shrimp, raw vegetables, plums, peaches, or fruits, as these combinations induce pathology. Its horn scraped..."
*Bencao Tujing* (Newly Illustrated Materia Medica) notes: "Milu velvet antler (Mirui), when taken, has greater efficacy than Lu rong (Deer Antler Velvet); boiled into gelatin, it surpasses Baijiao (Pigskin Gelatin). The claim that they die after mating is also a false rumor; asking people in mountains and marshes everywhere, none have heard of death resulting from mating. Minister Yuxi and others respectfully note: Tonifies deficiency-wasting, fills the marrow. Method for processing the horn: Cut into five-cun segments, split in the middle, roast until yellow and fragrant, then powder. Take three qianbi with wine on an empty stomach. If sudden heart pain occurs, one dose brings immediate recovery. Regular use makes the complexion red and white like flowers, benefits the Yang pathway. It is unknown why its efficacy differs from the meat. It can also be decocted into gelatin, having the same efficacy as Lujiaojiao (Deer Antler Glue). The velvet is far superior to deer velvet. Immortal prescription: Highly valued. Also treats men's cold qi and wind, causing bone and tendon pain. Make into powder for long-term use. Or grind in fermented grain water into a paste, apply to the face to prevent wrinkles, making it lustrous and lovely. Common people also use leather boots to fumigate feet for jiaoxi (athlete's foot). Chen Shiliang says: 'Mi, large...'"
Rihua Zi says: "The horn adds essence and tonifies marrow, benefits blood vessels, warms the waist and knees, beautifies the complexion, strengthens Yang, treats wind-pathogen, and is particularly effective for men, surpassing deer horn. According to *Yueling*: 'The deer horn belongs to Yin; at Summer Solstice, the horns shed, because one Yin arises.' It treats numbness and insensitivity of the waist and knees, and tonifies all blood diseases."
*Tujing* details are recorded under the entry for Deer Antler Velvet in Volume 17.
*Zhouhou Fang*: "Ge Shi treats young people with excessive Qi and facial sores; applying Milu fat cures them. Empirical Prescription: Treats elderly people with exhausted bone marrow. Tonifying Milu Velvet Decoction: Five liang of Milu velvet, remove hair, coat with butter, roast until slightly yellow, powder. Use two sheng of clear wine, slowly simmer in a silver pot into a paste, store in porcelain. Take half a spoon each time, mixed with warm water, taken before meals on an empty stomach. He Junmo cites *Book of Rites · Yueling*: 'In mid-summer, deer horns shed; in mid-winter, milu horns shed.' Rihua Zi... Beast. At Summer Solstice, receiving Yin Qi, horns shed; Mi is a marsh beast, thus winter... Image. Lu is a Yang beast, lustful and roaming mountains, at Summer Solstice receiving Yin sheds horns, symbolizing retreating from Yang. Shen Cunzhong's *Bitan* states Milu velvet benefits tonifying Yang, Lu rong benefits tonifying Yin, strengthening bone marrow. Ru rong too tender, several inches long, breaks like rotten wood. Ends like agate/red jade are best. Qingmi is a large deer. Inferior to ji, resembles zhang but is toxic."
