Longgu (Fossil Bone)
Sweet in flavor, neutral and slightly cold in nature, non-toxic. It primarily treats Gu Zhu (a type of accumulation disease caused by evil qi) in the heart and abdomen, old spirits and demons, cough with reverse flow of Qi, dysentery with pus and blood, leukorrhea (non-menstrual vaginal bleeding) in women, hard and fixed masses (Zheng Jia), pediatric heat-induced convulsions and epilepsy, treats irritability and fullness in the heart and abdomen, flaccidity and atrophy of the four limbs, sweating, spontaneous fright during sleep at night, anger, latent Qi lodged under the heart, inability to breathe, intestinal abscesses, internal carbuncles, and genital ulcers. It stops sweating, reduces urination, treats hematuria, nourishes the spirit, stabilizes the soul, and calms the five Zang organs.
Bai Longgu (White Fossil Bone): Treats seminal emission during dreams and urination.
Minister Yu Xi et al. respectfully note regarding general medicines for seminal emission: Bai Longgu is neutral and slightly cold.
Longchi (Dragon Teeth): Primarily treats pediatric and adult convulsions and epilepsy, manic disorder with wild running, Qi knotting below the heart, inability to breathe, various spasm disorders, kills spirits and demons, pediatric "Five Frights" and "Twelve Epilepsies", body heat that cannot be approached, and alternating chills and fever in the bones of adults. It also kills gu poison. It works well when combined with Renshen (Ginseng Root) and Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis), but fears Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum).
Minister Yu Xi et al. respectfully note regarding general medicines for frightening pathogens and drug pairs: Longchi is neutral.
Longjiao (Dragon Horns): Primarily treats convulsions and spasms, high body heat like fire, hardness in the abdomen, and hot diarrhea. Long-term use lightens the body, enhances spiritual clarity, and prolongs life. It grows in the rivers and valleys of Jin region and in soil caves on the rocky banks of Mount Tai where dead dragons were found. It can be harvested at any time. It fears Ganqi (Dried Lacquer) and Shujiao (Sichuan Pepper).
Tao Hongjing says: Currently, it is mostly produced between Liangzhou and Yizhou, and also in Bazhong. The bone should be selected from the spinal marrow area, displaying a white background with brocade-like patterns; those that stick to the tongue when licked are of good quality. The teeth are small and strong, retaining their tooth shape. The horns are hard and solid. There is also "Long Nao" (Dragon Brain), which is fat and soft, and can also stop dysentery. It is said to be shed skin of dragons, not actual dead bones. Recently in Bazhong, dragon bladders have been obtained several times, which I have seen personally with my own eyes; they retain their complete form and are said to treat residual diseases after childbirth, and should be taken as powder. Tang Ben Zhu notes: Longgu is currently produced in Jin region; those that are hard and raw are not good, while those possessing all five colors are excellent. Its green, yellow, red, white, and black colors should correspond to the Zang organs, similar to Wuzhi (Five Mushrooms), Wu Shiying (Five Quartzs), and Wushizhi (Five Clay Minerals). However, the *Ben Jing* does not discuss this, and the reason is unknown. Minister Yu Xi et al. respectfully note regarding drug pairs: Longjiao is neutral. Wu Shi says: Longgu with blue-white color is superior. He also states regarding Longchi: Shen Nong and Ji Shi consider it very cold. *Yao Xing Lun* says: Longgu is a sovereign herb, incompatible with fish, and has slight toxicity. It expels evil Qi, calms the mind, stops cold dysentery and passage of pus and blood, treats metrorrhagia and leukorrhea in women, stops seminal emission in dreams, nocturnal emissions involving ghosts, treats hematuria, and is added for deficiency with frequent chaotic dreams. He also states regarding Longchi: It is a sovereign herb. It anchors the heart and stabilizes the soul. Both teeth and horns primarily treat severe heat in children. Ri Huazi says: Longgu strengthens the spleen, astringes the intestines and stomach, stops diarrhea and dysentery, treats thirst and diseases, prevents fetal leakage during pregnancy, treats intestinal wind with lower bleeding, metrorrhagia and leukorrhea, epistaxis, hematemesis, and stops sweating. He also states regarding Longchi: It is astringent and cool. It treats irritability, epilepsy, manic heat, and repels spirits and demons.
*Tu Jing* says: Longgu, along with its teeth and horns, comes from the rivers and valleys of Jin region and soil caves on the rocky banks of Mount Tai where dead dragons were found; it is now abundant in Hedong prefectures and commanderies. Some say it is shed dragon skin, actually not dead bone; selecting the spinal marrow with white brocade patterns that stick to the tongue indicates good quality. The teeth are small and strong, retaining tooth shape. The horns are hard and solid. Harvesting has no fixed time. Li Zhao's *Guo Shi Bu* says: When spring waters rise, fish climb the Dragon Gate, shedding many bones, which people collect as medicine, some having five colors. The *Ben Jing* says it comes from Jin region. Since Longmen is also in Jin region, could the so-called Longgu today be the bones of these fish? Some say the bones have male and female types; fine-grained and broad ones are female, coarse-grained and narrow ones are male. For medicinal use, those with all five colors are best, followed by yellow-white, and black is inferior. They must not come from places contaminated with impurities, otherwise they are unusable. Bones and teeth are commonly used by physicians, while horns are rarely used. Only in Shen Shi's *Wuxie Wan* are dragon horns used. It is also stated: if horns are unavailable, use teeth. In *Qianjin Fang*, treatments for heart conditions sometimes combine Longchi and Longjiao.
Wei Dan treated wind-heat manic epilepsy by taking rotten dragon horns, grinding them thickly to extract juice, taking two large he (unit of volume) after meals, twice a day. However, rotten dragon horns are generally rare in the world. Sun Guangxian's *Bei Meng Suo Yan* says: During the Later Shijin period, at the border of Zhenzhou and Xingtai, a dragon was fought to death. A local magnate named Cao Kuan saw it, took its pair of horns. In front of the horns was an object like blue color, with patterns like messy brocade, which no one recognized. Cao Kuan was killed by bandits within a year, and the garrison soldiers were also executed shortly after. It is also said: People on the sea coast say dragons lay two eggs each time, one becomes "Jidiao". Jidiao often associates with deer, or leaves secretions by the water; when encountering floating debris, it sticks to tree branches, resembling a cattail club, with a slightly greenish-yellow color, resembling gray, called Zixiaohua (Purple Tip Flower), often used in decoctions. *Yanling Zhibao Fang* treats deafness regardless of duration by taking Jidiao grease, inserting half an almond-sized amount into the ear daily, resulting in cure. It is said this item is not rare in Fujian and Jianzhou; its grease must be stored in glass bottles, further sealed in camphor wood boxes, otherwise it will lose potency due to air permeability. Also, *Qiezhong Fang* for amenorrhea lasting years, which must be treated, uses small amounts of Longtai (Dragon Fetus), Wasong (Tile Moss), and Jingtian (Crassula) three items, boiled in two cups of water to obtain one cup, strained. Divided into two warm doses; after a short while, abdominal movement occurs, and menstruation flows. Longtai: Not seen used in ancient and modern formulas, and few people recognize it. The original formula note says: This item comes from large streams in mountain ravines in Shu, resembling dried fish scales, very fishy and smelly when decocted with medicine. Formula experts rarely hear of or see it; although not a crucial herb, since ancients used it, there should be those who know it in the world, so it is attached here to show extensive recording.
Lei Gong says: Those from Yanzhou, Cangzhou, and Taiyuan are superior. Bones with fine grains and broad texture are female, bones with coarse grains and narrow texture are male. Bones with five colors are superior. Boil in water, bathe twice, grind into powder, store in silk bags. Take one swallow, break open its belly, remove intestines, place the bag of bone powder inside the swallow's belly, hang it over a well overnight. At dawn, remove the swallow and bag, take the bone powder and grind it ten thousand times; the effect is miraculous. Men should take it on an empty stomach, placed within kidney-tonifying formulas, aiming for the Qi of Longgu to enter the Kidney organ. *Shenghui Fang*: Treats infantile umbilical ulcers that do not heal for a long time. Use Longgu burnt to ash, finely ground, and applied externally. *Waitai Miyao* treats Cold Damage that has lasted eight or nine days to more than ten days, with great irritability and thirst, intense heat, and sores in the Sanjiao, frequent loose stools, or opening mouth and sticking out tongue with sighing, rotting eyes, sores in mouth and nose, muttering, and inability to recognize people. It removes heat toxins and stops dysentery. Half jin of Longgu, crushed, boiled in one dou of water to obtain four sheng, submerged in the bottom of a well until cold. Take five he gradually. Drink freely, especially suitable for young and old. *Qianjin Fang*: Women with spontaneous hematuria. One liang of Longgu, mixed with wine using a square-inch scoop, taken on an empty stomach, three times a day. Another formula: Treats forgetfulness; long-term use improves intelligence and memory. Equal parts Longgu, Hugu (Tiger Bone), and Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix), ground into powder. Take one square-inch scoop with wine after meals, three times a day. *Zhouhou Fang*: Treats unresolved febrile disease with fatal diarrhea. Half jin of Longgu, crushed and ground, boiled in one dou of water to obtain five sheng, wait until extremely cold, drink slowly; sweating indicates cure. Another formula: Treats chronic malaria. One square-inch scoop of powdered Longgu, before onset of fever, boiled in one and a half sheng of wine for three boils, drink completely while hot, cover to induce sweat, effective. Another formula: If chronic diarrhea persists for a long time, becoming rest dysentery. Four liang of Longgu, crushed to size of small beans, boiled in five sheng of water to obtain two and a half sheng, let cool, divide into five doses. Also mix with rice water to make pills, take ten pills. *Jingyan Fang*: Warms essence and Qi, benefits primal Yang. Equal parts Bai Longgu and Yuanzhi, ground into powder, refined honey made into pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take thirty pills with cold water on an empty stomach and before bed. *Meishi Fang*: Treats loss of essence, leaking upon brief sleep. Four fen of Bai Longgu, five he of Jiu Zi (Leek Seed), ground together into powder. Take one square-inch scoop mixed with wine on an empty stomach. Another formula: Treats post-febrile dysentery with continuous pus and blood, inability to eat. Take Bai Longgu powder mixed with rice water, one square-inch scoop. Another formula: Treats persistent epistaxis and hemoptysis. Make five-colored Longgu into powder, blow a quantity of a river bean into the nose, stops immediately. Another formula: Treats wind-heat manic epilepsy. Grind rotten dragon horns thickly to extract juice, take two he after meals, twice a day. Yao Shi Fang: Treats hematuria. Two square-inch scoops of powdered Longgu, mixed with warm water, taken twice a day, cured. Yao Hezhong treats infantile rectal prolapse due to dysentery. Dust with Bai Longgu powder. Yang Wengong's *Tan Yuan* says: There is much Longgu in the mountains of Zezhou. It is because dragons shed in the earth, and cliff collapses yield much of it, with body bones, head, and horns all intact.
*Yanyi* says: Regarding Longgu, theories from various schools are inconsistent and cannot be specified, ultimately being speculation. In a commoner's house in Yingyang County, West Capital, a cliff suddenly collapsed, yielding a set of Longgu with complete limbs, head, and horns. It is unknown whether it was shed or died. If considered shed or dead, it is a tangible object, yet living ones cannot be seen, only dead ones visible; if considered transformed, why does its form alone not transform? However, what is described in *Xiyu Ji* is very detailed, but I dare not rely on it. All things receive different endowments, creation cannot be fully known, and details cannot be ascertained. Confucius said: "The gentleman knows what he does not know," leaving gaps as appropriate. Wild and forced interpretations may mislead future learners. It cannot be omitted in treating seminal slipperiness and large intestine slipperiness.
