The kidney manifests its luster in the external genitalia. When kidney qi is deficient and cannot control body fluids, sweating occurs; due to deficiency, wind pathogens invade, lodging in the couli (the spaces between skin and muscles), preventing the righteous qi from venting. The pathogenic and righteous qi interfere with each other at the skin level, causing itching. Scratching leads to the formation of sores.
"Wind deficiency" refers to a condition where various ailments originate. Individuals suffering from labor injury have weak blood and qi, making their skin and couli loose and sparse, allowing wind pathogens to easily invade. The wind may wander through the skin or stagnate within the zang-fu organs. Depending on what is affected, numerous diseases arise. Treatments involving decoctions, moxibustion/heat therapy, acupuncture, and stone needles have separate specific formulas. Methods for tonification, nourishment, and guidance/exercise are attached below.
The *Regimen Manual · Guidance Method* states: Bend one leg, point the toe towards the ground and exert force to tense the body. With one hand, pull back the Jie Xi (ST41) acupoint of the foot towards the heart as far as possible. Feel as if the waist, the Jie Xi acupoint of the foot, and the head are dissolving like bones, with qi scattering. Push the mat backwards with the other hand. Perform this to the utmost extent once, repeating 21 times (3 x 7). Do the same switching hands. This removes wind-heat and acute stuffiness in the hands, feet, waist, and arms.
It also states: Tilt the head down and arch the back, extending to the utmost extent at once. Reach hands down to the knees, straighten the waist, and keep the face and body upright. Then return to the starting position. Go back and forth 21 times. Initially, stand upright, extend hands downwards, move the waist left and right 14 times (2 x 7), and stretch the spine up and down 7 times. This gradually alleviates coldness and disharmony in the spine, arms, and waist. Press the head down, stretch both hands long upwards behind the head, raising them together with the head gradually by five cun. Extend to the utmost extent at once, then retract hands to the front of the heart and behind the back. Movements should be harmonious, with qi and strength balanced; do not let qi overpower strength, nor strength overpower qi. Repeat 14 times. This removes disharmony of meridians and vessels in the chest and back, and imbalance of blood and qi.
It also states: Extend the left shin, bend the right knee and press inward. Hold for five breaths, then stop. This guides lung qi, removes wind deficiency, and clarifies vision. Practicing according to the classics, guiding the qi in the lungs, removes wind deficiency diseases, clarifies vision, and allows one to see clearly at night just as during the day.
The kidneys govern the waist and legs. If the kidney meridian is deficient and damaged, wind-cold invades, causing lower back pain. Additionally, if pathogens lodge in the collateral of the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian, it causes lower back pain radiating to the lower abdomen, making it impossible to breathe while lying flat.
Palpating the Chi pulse (radial artery distal part) being deep indicates lower back and abdominal pain. A weak Cun Kou pulse (radial artery proximal part) indicates lower back and abdominal pain. If both Chi and Cun pulses are floating and move straight up and straight down, this indicates stiffness and pain in the waist due to disease of the Du Mai (Governing Vessel).
Generally, there are five types of lower back pain: First, Shaoyin lower back pain. Shaoyin corresponds to the month of Shen (lunar July); when yang qi of all things is injured, lower back pain occurs. Second, Wind-Bi lower back pain. Wind-cold adheres to the waist, causing pain. Third, Kidney-deficiency lower back pain. Overexertion injures the kidneys, causing pain. Fourth, Traumatic lower back pain. Falling or dropping injuries damage the waist, causing pain. Fifth, Dampness lower back pain. Sleeping on wet ground causes pain. Treatments involving decoctions, heat therapy, acupuncture, and stone needles have separate specific formulas. Methods for tonification, nourishment, and guidance/exercise are attached below.
The *Regimen Manual* says: Do not lie down immediately after eating; over time, this forms qi disorders, leading to lower back pain.
It also says: Do not strain excessively during defecation; this causes lower back pain and dry eyes.
It also says: Laughing too much causes the kidney to shift, leading to lower back pain.
It also says: After sweating, do not sit on the edge of the bed with legs dangling; over time, this forms Blood Bi, resulting in heavy legs and lower back pain.
The *Regimen Manual · Guidance Method* states: Extend one hand upward to the utmost extent, rotating the palm in four directions. Exert force downward with the other hand. Press palms together and extend fingers. Lean sideways, turn the body as if looking back, palm facing up, sink the mind's qi, and scatter comfortably. Perceive qi descending and ascending. Reach the utmost extent. Do the same left-right and up-down four times (4 x 7 = 28). This removes pain and stuffiness in the Jing Well points of the arms, ribs, and spinal column.
It also states: In a kneeling position, extend both hands long, pushing forward against the mat. Wait until the waist and spine need to turn, allowing the whole body's bones to dissolve and qi to scatter. Stretch the waist to the utmost extent, then quickly return to kneeling to create tension, as if expelling cold qi from inside the spine. Let the arms ache, feeling a dull pain, then sit up. Go back and forth 14 times. This removes disharmony of the five zang organs and back pain/stuffiness.
It also states: Whenever one feels spinal stiffness, regardless of the season, contract the throat, direct qi into the arms, look up, and exert force upward. Twist the head left and right, 21 times total (3 sets of 7). Pause once, wait for blood flow and qi movement to stabilize, then resume. Start slow, then become urgent; do not start urgent then slow. If healthy, practice at three times: morning rising, noon, and sunset. Each time, perform 21 repetitions. This removes chills and fever, and pain in the spine, waist, and neck.
It also states: Extend both legs long, pressing toes upward. Extend both hands long, palms facing each other, fingers straight. Look up and thrust the spine. Extend to the utmost extent at once, completing three cycles. Move feet apart by one chi, keeping hands in place, turning palms outward seven times. Move feet apart by two chi, pushing hands down against the mat to the utmost extent, three times. This removes deficiency-labor of internal and external meridians/vessels throughout the body, and bone marrow pain/stuffiness. Extend both legs toward the corner of the body. Grasp both big toes tightly with both hands. Do not use mental effort; let mind's qi reside in the feet. Simultaneously exert and relax hands and feet to the utmost extent, 21 times. This removes pain in the hips, arms, and waist, relieves constrained qi at Jie Xi, and gradually reduces damage.
It also states: Anyone learning health preservation must first sit upright, knees together, feet aligned. Upon sitting, initially point toes toward each other, heels outward. Sit seeking stability, then bring heels inward relative to each other. Upon sitting, point toes outward. If feeling stuffy/painful, gradually lift the body as if relaxing. Sit until the sensation resembles two seats, no longer painful. Then raise heels vertically. Upon sitting, align toes and turn them outward. Practice this every time you sit. This removes cold in the Bladder, wind-cold on the face, cold knees, foot pain, rebellious qi, and lower back pain, eliminating all discomfort naturally.
