The Kidney governs the waist and lower limbs. Among the Three Yin and Three Yang meridians, the Twelve Regular Meridians, and the Eight Extraordinary Vessels, there are those that penetrate the Kidney and connect to the lumbar spine. If the Kidney is damaged by overstrain, injuring the meridians, and is further invaded by Wind-Cold pathogenic factors, causing Qi and Blood to clash, then Lumbago (lower back pain) occurs. When Yang meridians are affected, the body cannot bend forward; when Yin meridians are affected, the body cannot extend backward. If both Yin and Yang meridians are afflicted by pathogenic factors, it results in lumbago with an inability to bend or extend.
The *Yangsheng Fang* (Prescriptions for Health Preservation) · *Daoyin Fa* (Guiding and Pulling Methods) states: Extend both legs, and use both hands' fingers to touch the tips of the five toes. This cures "waist fracture" where one cannot bend down, as well as hemoptysis (coughing up blood) and chronic pain. It also states: Extend both legs fully, and grasp the five toes with both hands seven times. This cures a fractured waist where one cannot bend down or extend upward.
When labor injuries damage Kidney Qi, the meridians become deficient. If one lies on dampness or exposes oneself to drafts, Damp-Wind pathogens take advantage of this deficiency to clash with the Kidney Meridian and interact with Qi and Blood, causing lumbago. Hence, it is called "Damp-Wind Lumbago."
In cases of overstrain, Kidney Qi is deficient. Since the Kidney governs the waist and lower limbs, and its meridian penetrates the Kidney and connects to the spine, Wind pathogens suddenly enter the Kidney Meridian due to deficiency, resulting in sudden onset of lumbago.
All lumbago is caused by injury to Kidney Qi. When Kidney deficiency allows Wind pathogens to invade, these pathogens accumulate in the Kidney Meridian and clash with Qi and Blood. If this persists without resolving, it leads to chronic lumbago.
The Kidney governs the waist and lower limbs. When the Kidney Meridian is deficient, it is susceptible to Wind-Cold. If there is internal accumulation of water, Water-Dampness and Wind pathogens clash and infiltrate the Kidney, causing Kidney Qi to stagnate internally without being able to circulate freely, thus inducing lumbago. The clinical manifestations include heaviness of the body and coldness of the waist, a sensation of heaviness in the abdomen as if wearing a belt of five thousand coins, feeling as though sitting in water, a shape resembling water retention, absence of thirst, normal urination, and normal appetite. If prolonged, this may transform into Edema Disease (water disease), due to Kidney Dampness.
"Waist Fracture" refers to pain in the waist caused by sudden trauma. This is due to damaged Blood clashing with the dorsal spine. If not cured for a long time, it causes shortness of breath and pallor, because the Kidney has been injured.
This condition arises from insufficient Kidney Qi and exposure to Wind pathogens. Overstrain leads to Kidney deficiency; deficiency makes one susceptible to Wind-Cold. The clash between Wind-Cold and True Qi results in pain in the waist and lower limbs.
The Liver governs the sinews and stores Blood. Blood is Yin, and Qi is Yang. Pure Yang nourishes the Spirit, while soft Yang nourishes the sinews. When Yin and Yang are harmonious, Qi and Blood are balanced and mutually nourish the body, preventing pathogenic invasion. However, if the body is deficient, it becomes susceptible to Wind. Wind-Cold clashes with the sinews of the dorsal spine; coldness causes spasms and tightness, leading to Kyphosis (hunchback/back curvature).
