Humans may suddenly experience severe stabbing pain in the heart and abdomen, accompanied by severe distress and a sensation of nearly dying; this is termed "Zhong E" (Sudden Attack by Evil Qi). This refers to the injury caused by evil pathogenic qi to the human body. The reason for this is that human blood and qi nourish themselves, with spirit serving as the master; if blood and qi are disharmonious, the spirit becomes weak, allowing malignant toxins and ghostly qi to invade. If pregnant women contract this disease, it also causes damage to the fetus.
Abdominal fullness during pregnancy occurs because there is pre-existing cold stagnation and retained fluid in the abdomen. Complicated by pregnancy and further aggravated by exposure to cold, the frozen fluids are activated, causing warm qi and cold qi to interfere with each other, resulting in abdominal distension.
When the Lung is affected by slight cold, and cold damages the Lung, coughing ensues. This is because the Lung governs Qi and corresponds to the skin and hair; when cold attacks the body, it first lodges in the skin and hair, thus affecting the Lung. Furthermore, the Qi of the five Zang organs and six Fu organs all derives from the Lung, which prospers according to the four seasons. Coughing can occur in any of the five Zang or six Fu organs, depending on which organ contracts cold corresponding to its season. In autumn, the Lung is affected; in winter, the Kidney; in spring, the Liver; in summer, the Heart. If coughing in other organs persists, it transmits to the corresponding Fu organs. If pregnant women suffer from this, prolonged illness will injure the fetus.
Xiong Bi (Chest Bi Syndrome) is caused by cold pathogenic qi invading the Zang and Fu organs and rushing upward to the chest and heart. Symptoms include a sensation of fullness, choking and obstruction, itching-like sensations combined with Bi pain, palpitations and fear in the chest, and inability to eat. This is called Xiong Bi. As the condition progresses, the Spleen and Stomach gradually weaken, potentially leading to death. If pregnant women contract this, it not only harms the mother but also damages the fetus.
Du Zhong (Toxic Swelling) is formed when wind pathogenic qi and malignant toxins invade the muscles, struggling with blood and qi, and accumulating into swelling. However, evil toxins attacking the body have no fixed location; they lodge where the meridians are deficient. Thus, they may settle on the body or in the throat. Wherever the toxin stops, blood becomes stagnant and obstructed; the struggle between blood/qi and the pathogen results in swelling. If the toxin manifests on the body, the situation is relatively mild; if it settles in the throat, it is most critical, causing swelling, blockage, Bi pain, and even the inability to swallow water or food. If the toxin attacks the Heart, it causes mental restlessness and distress. Pregnant women suffering from this require urgent rescue; otherwise, both mother and child will be injured.
Gu Du (Gu Poison) refers to placing various insects such as snakes, centipedes, and dung beetles together, allowing them to devour each other until only one remains; this survivor is named "Gu". People in many counties make Gu and worship it reverently, using it through diet to poison people to death. It is also said that patients may vomit blood or pass blood, dying because the Gu consumes their internal organs. It is further stated that the onset of Gu poison varies in speed: slow cases drag on for months, while acute cases kill within a day or two. One can use magical arts to identify the master who cast the Gu; calling out to expel the Gu leads to recovery. Even ordinary people die upon encountering this, let alone pregnant women; thus, both mother and child are injured.
