On the first day of a seasonal pathogenic disease (Shi Qi Bing), the Taiyang channel (Greater Yang channel) is affected. As the head of the three Yang channels, it governs the head and neck; therefore, on the first day, pain in the head, neck, waist, and spine occurs.
On the second day, the Yangming channel (Bright Yang channel) is affected. The Yangming channel governs the muscles, and its collaterals connect to the nose and enter the eyes; therefore, on the second day, heat in the flesh, dryness of the nose, and insomnia occur. When yang channels are initially affected at the exterior, one may apply medicated ointments or use moxibustion/fire therapy to induce sweating for recovery.
On the third day, the Shaoyang channel (Lesser Yang channel) is affected. The Shaoyang channel follows the hypochondrium and ascends to the neck and ears; therefore, on the third day, heat in the chest and hypochondrium and deafness occur. The meridians of the three Yang channels begin to transmit the disease among themselves, but it has not yet entered the zang organs; thus, it can be cured by inducing sweating.
On the fourth day, the Taiyin channel (Greater Yin channel) is affected. The Taiyin channel is the head of the three Yin channels. After three days, once all yang channels have been affected, the disease transmits to the yin channels. The Taiyin channel connects with the spleen and governs the throat; therefore, on the fourth day, abdominal fullness and dryness of the throat occur. Since the disease is located in the chest and diaphragm, it can be cured by emesis (inducing vomiting).
On the fifth day, the Shaoyin channel (Lesser Yin channel) is affected. The Shaoyin channel passes through the kidney, connects with the lung, and links to the root of the tongue; therefore, on the fifth day, heat in the mouth, dryness of the tongue, and a desire to drink water occur. Since the disease is located in the abdomen, it can be cured by purgation (drastic downward draining).
On the sixth day, the Jueyin channel (Terminal Yin channel) is affected. The Jueyin channel follows the genitalia and connects with the liver; therefore, on the sixth day, irritability, fullness, and contraction of the genitals occur. At this point, the three Yin and three Yang channels are all affected, and toxic vapors have entered the stomach and intestines; thus, it can be cured by purgation.
On the seventh day, according to the law, the condition should slightly improve. This is because the transmission of disease through the yin and yang channels has concluded. If the disease persists, it indicates a "re-entering channel" disease (Zai Jing Bing). A re-entering channel disease refers to the meridians being affected again.
If the seasonal pathogenic disease does not resolve after the eighth or ninth day, it may be due to: the various meridians being affected repeatedly; or toxic vapors remaining uneliminated after prior treatment with sweating, emesis, or purgation; or the disease stagnating in one channel without immediate transmission, causing symptoms to remain unchanged for several days. In all such cases, one must carefully observe the signs and symptoms...
Regarding the fourth day, when the toxin is in the chest and diaphragm, emesis is appropriate. For those who experience chest and heart irritability and fullness on the second or third day, it is because the toxic vapors have already entered. For those whose illness has lasted five or six days or more, yet the toxic vapors remain in the upper jiao (Upper Burner), this is due to the presence of phlegm-solidity in the patient; therefore, emesis is also appropriate.
