Snoring sleep refers to the phenomenon where sounds are produced in the throat and pharynx during sleep. The human throat is the passage for the ascending and descending of Qi (vital energy). If Qi and Blood (Xue) are harmonious, the airway remains unobstructed whether awake or asleep; however, if Qi is disharmonious, its turbulent movement impacts the throat and pharynx, producing sound. In obese individuals who snore, it is because their Qi and Blood are stagnant and dense, compressing and narrowing the throat passage, causing sluggish and obstructed airflow.
Some individuals have a disharmony in their constitutional Qi, causing their essential fluids (Jin Ye) to become mixed with turbid substances, resulting in an offensive body odor. For this condition, treatments such as hot compresses (Tang), moxibustion (Wei), acupuncture (Zhen), and stone lancets (Shi) have specific prescriptions. Additionally, there are methods for tonifying, nourishing, and guiding exercises, which are now appended from the *Yangsheng Fang* (Prescriptions for Nourishing Life): Cover the mouth and nose with hands, breathe gently towards the sun for a period until fluid generates in the hands, then quickly use the hands to massage the face and head. Practicing this regularly...
Those whose armpits emit an odor resembling green onions and fermented soybeans, or some say resembling foxes, are termed "Fox Odor" (Huchou). This is all due to disharmony of Qi and Blood, leading to accumulation and stagnation that causes foul odors.
When the armpits are constantly damp and develop sores due to the odor, it is called "Leaking Armpit" (Louye). This is also caused by disharmony of Qi and Blood, where Wind Pathogens (Feng Xie) bind with the body's defenses, causing Jin Ye to accumulate and stagnate, resulting in dampness and foul odor.
Dan (Erysipelas/Dan toxin) refers to the sudden redness of the body, resembling the application of cinnabar, hence the name Dan. It may appear on the hands and feet, or on the abdomen, with lesions the size of a palm, all caused by toxic wind-heat. Severe cases may resemble Ju (carbuncles/abscesses); if not treated promptly, the pain becomes unbearable, and after a long time, the tissue may rot and discharge several sheng (a traditional unit of volume) of pus and blood. If it occurs at the joints, it can sever the limbs; if the toxin enters the abdomen, it can be fatal. It is most contraindicated for children to contract this disease.
White Dan initially presents with itching and pain, slight swelling, appearing distended like blown-up skin, raised but without severe pain or redness, and the lesion color is white. This is due to the involvement of wind-cold pathogens, which causes the white coloration.
Black Dan also initially presents with itching and pain, or swelling and elevation, with a slightly blackish hue. This is due to the involvement of wind-cold pathogens, which causes the black coloration.
Red Dan initially presents with erythema and elevation. Large lesions resemble connected coins, while small ones resemble hemp seeds or beans. The skin texture resembles chicken combs. This is caused by severe wind-toxin, resulting in redness. It is also known as Cornelian Cherry Dan (Zhuyu Dan).
Dan Zhen (Dan rash) presents with unchanged skin color and no heat sensation, but with subcutaneous elevations that are contiguous and mildly itchy, hence named Dan.
Shihuo Dan (Chamber Fire Dan) initially appears on the gastrocnemius muscle (calf), about the thickness of a finger and two to three cun in length, with red and hot skin.
