Zhongfeng (Wind Stroke) is caused by the invasion of deficient wind pathogens into the human body. Wind refers to the Qi of the four seasons and eight directions. Typically, on the day of Winter Solstice, one observes the winds from the eight directions; winds coming from their native direction govern the growth and nourishment of all things. If they do not come from their native direction, they are called "deficient winds" (Xu Feng), which harm all things. When the human body is deficient, it becomes susceptible to these winds. Although symptoms may not manifest immediately upon initial invasion, the pathogen remains in the skin and muscles. Later, if the body suffers a second wind injury, the cumulative effect of prior and subsequent exposures, combined with bodily deficiency, triggers the disease. The Shu points of the internal organs are located on the back; Zhongfeng often enters through these Shu points and manifests as disease corresponding to the specific point invaded.
If the Heart is affected by wind, the patient can only lie supine and cannot turn sideways, accompanied by sweating. If the lips are red and sweat flows profusely, the condition is treatable; urgently moxa the Xinshu (BL-15, Heart Shu) point for 100 moxibustion units. If the lips are blue, white, yellow, or black, this indicates heart failure transforming into water retention (a critical syndrome); if the face appears fixed and expressionless, with frequent trembling or startle responses, it is untreatable, and death will occur within five to six days.
If the Liver is affected by wind, the patient sits in a squatting posture and cannot lower their head. If there is a slight bluish discoloration around both eyes extending to the forehead, with blue lips and a yellowish complexion, the condition is treatable; urgently moxa the Ganshu (BL-18, Liver Shu) point for 100 moxibustion units. If the discoloration is deep blue-black, and the face is half yellow and half white, the liver is already damaged, the condition is untreatable, and death will occur within a few days.
If the Spleen is affected by wind, the patient squats with abdominal fullness, generalized jaundice, vomiting of salty fluid, and sweating; this is treatable; urgently moxa the Pishu (BL-20, Spleen Shu) point for 100 moxibustion units. If the hands and feet turn blue, it is untreatable.
If the Kidney is affected by wind, the patient squats with lower back pain. If, upon inspecting the left and right hypochondriac regions, no yellow patches the size of a cake are present, the condition is treatable; urgently moxa the Shenshu (BL-23, Kidney Shu) point for 100 moxibustion units. If the teeth are yellowish-red, the sideburns stand erect, and the complexion resembles earth, it is untreatable.
If the Lung is affected by wind, the patient lies supine with chest fullness, shortness of breath, dizziness, stifling sensation, and sweating. If the area below the eyes, on both sides of the nose, extending down to the mouth, appears white, the condition is treatable; urgently moxa the Feishu (BL-13, Lung Shu) point for 100 moxibustion units. If the color is yellow, the lung is already damaged and transformed into blood stasis; it is untreatable. The patient will exhibit delirium and pick at empty air or clothes, leading to death within a few days.
Zhongfeng Koujin (Wind Stroke with Jaw Lock) occurs when bodily deficiency allows wind pathogens to invade the sinews connecting the mandible, cheeks, and mouth. The sinews of the three Yang meridians of the hand converge in the mandible and cheeks; the sinews of the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian ascend to flank the mouth. When wind carries cold pathogens and invades these sinews due to deficiency, the sinews become spasmodic, pulling the jaw tight and causing lockjaw.
