Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Yuan Zhi (Polygalae Radix), Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen) (each 1 qian), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix) (5 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
There are cases where a person sits by a stove with roaring fire all day, resulting in incessant sweating. Over time, the primordial Qi becomes severely deficient, accompanied by thirst and a desire to drink. When fever suddenly occurs, people often mistake it for an external wind contraction. Little do they know that this is actually Lung Metal injured by Fire. The Lung belongs to Metal and fears Fire most. Although external Fire differs from internal Fire, when Lung Qi is subjected to the roasting pressure of both external and internal Fires, it naturally fails to receive nourishment. Moreover, the Lung is the mother of Kidney Water; if the Lung itself is difficult to nourish, how can it generate Kidney Water? If Kidney Water is not generated, it will daily seek "mother's milk" (metaphorically relying on Lung Yin for nourishment). If the mother is ill and cannot respond, the child will also become diseased. With both mother and child organs diseased, the skin inevitably becomes unfull, making it easy for Wind Pathogens to invade. It is not necessary for the pathogen to enter via the Fengfu acupoint of the Bladder Meridian to be considered an invasion. Therefore, why must the treatment focus on dispelling Wind? One need only tonify Lung Qi and abundantly nourish Kidney Water. Then, Lung Metal receives nourishment, internal pathogens find no place to hide, and any Wind entering through the skin will still exit through the skin.
The formula used is An Fei San (Lung-Calming Powder):
Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix) (5 qian), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix) (2 qian), Sheng Di (Rehmanniae Radix) (3 qian), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (3 qian), Fu Ling (Poria) (3 qian), Zi Su (Perillae Folium) (2 qian), Kuan Dong Hua (Farflos Flos) (1 qian), Tian Men Dong (Asparagi Radix) (3 qian), Zi Wan (Asteris Radix) (1 qian), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) (3 qian), Shu Di (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) (3 qian), Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus) (2 qian), Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix) (5 qian), Bei Mu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus) (0.5 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally. The body heat resolves, and full recovery is achieved after two doses.
This is a method of treating the Lung and Kidney simultaneously; calming the Kidney serves to calm the Lung. If one disregards Lung Qi and blindly expels pathogens, it is adding injury to injury. It would be rare indeed if such a case did not transform into a consumptive disease (Lao Qie).
For this syndrome, Su Jie Tang (Perilla and Platycodon Decoction) is also effective.
Su Ye (Perillae Folium), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 1 qian), Sheng Di (Rehmanniae Radix) (3 qian), Sha Shen (Glehniae Radix or Adenophorae Radix), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (each 5 qian), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix) (each 2 qian), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (3 qian), Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix) (1 liang).
