It causes no harm, and the effect can be achieved promptly. The formula used is *Huzi Tang* (Child-Protecting Decoction): *Renshen* (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian), *Fuling* (Poria, 3 qian), *Baizhu* (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 2 qian), *Chaihu* (Bupleuri Radix, 5 fen), *Guizhi* (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 2 fen). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, the convulsions subside; a second dose is unnecessary. Why is this method so miraculous? Because when infants are initially injured by wind-cold, the pathogenic factor must enter via the Taiyang channel (Taiyang meridian syndrome) first. Now, using *Guizhi* and *Chaihu* to resolve simultaneously the pathogens of the Taiyang and Shaoyang (Shaoyang meridian syndrome) channels, the pathogen will not dare to retreat into the Yangming channel (Yangming meridian syndrome). Moreover, with *Renshen* to consolidate the Qi of the Spleen and Stomach, the pathogen is even less likely to invade the Middle Jiao (Middle Burner). Adding *Baizhu* to benefit the waist and umbilical region, and *Fuling* to unblock the Bladder, allows the pathogen entering from outside to dissipate. Even without external pathogens, *Chaihu* soothes Liver Qi, and *Guizhi* warms the Earth of the Spleen and Stomach, which is indeed beneficial, what harm could there be? Alas, people in the world do not know such treatment methods; they recklessly fabricate the label of "Convulsive Disease" (Jingfeng, often referring to infantile convulsions/seizures), and lightly administer dispersing and sedative/heavy substances, thereby killing countless infants. Physicians do not realize their error, nor do the patients' families understand; they all attribute it to destiny and do not blame the mistake. Who knows that ten thousand ghosts cry out in the underworld? I wish everyone would completely eliminate the term "Convulsive Disease," so that children might find some blessing.
This condition can also be treated with *Jiuying Dan*: *Renshen* (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian), *Fuling* (Poria, 3 qian), *Chaihu* (Bupleuri Radix, 3 fen), *Baishao* (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 2 qian), *Shenqu* (Massa Medicata Fermentata, 5 fen), *Sharen* (Amomi Fructus, 1 grain), *Paojiang* (Prepared Zingiberis Rhizoma, 3 fen). Decoct in water and take orally.
After a woman has just given birth, if she suddenly experiences twitching and pulling of the hands and feet, deviation of the mouth and eyes, head shaking, neck stiffness, and even opisthotonos (body bent backward like a bow), people think it is postpartum convulsive disease. Who knows that it is actually Spasm (Jingbing, characterized by neck stiffness, limb spasms, and opisthotonos) caused by excessive blood loss? Postpartum, old blood is depleted, and new blood has not yet grown; the Blood residence is empty, making it easy for Wind to enter. It does not necessarily require external thieving Wind; even with every movement, Wind can arise internally. One feels chilling cold between the armpits; if not careful, Wind enters. However, since Wind enters due to deficiency, tonifying deficiency allows Wind to exit. The method of tonifying deficiency is that lost blood cannot be generated quickly, but deficient Qi should be urgently supplemented. Supplementing Qi makes Blood generation easier; once Blood is generated, Wind cannot remain. Therefore, driving out Wind from the Blood residence is not the principal treatment, let alone purely using drugs to calm convulsions. The formula used is *Jiuchan Zhijing Tang* (Postpartum Rescue and Spasm-Stopping Decoction): *Renshen* (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 5 qian), *Danggui* (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 1 liang), *Chuanxiong* (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 3 qian), *Jingjie* (Schizonepetae Herba, stir-fried until black, 1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, the illness lightens; after two doses, it lightens further; after three doses, complete recovery occurs.
This formula is a variation of *Foshou San* (Buddha's Hand Powder), greatly tonifying the deficiency of Qi and Blood. Adding *Renshen* makes Qi even more vigorous; when Qi is vigorous, pathogens cannot resist. Moreover, *Jingjie* is a drug that guides Blood back to its vessels; once Blood returns to its vessels, how can pathogens remain alone? Furthermore, *Jingjie* itself can dispel pathogens without damaging healthy Qi, so it can be used doubly to achieve unexpected results. If one does not tonify Qi and Blood but only engages in dispelling Wind, the Blood residence becomes emptier, and Wind will enter directly, instantly killing the woman. Can one not be cautious?
This condition is also effectively treated with *Huomu Dan*: *Danggui* (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and *Renshen* (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (each 1 liang), *Chuanxiong* (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 5 qian), *Chaihu* (Bupleuri Radix, 3 fen), *Rougui* (Cinnamomi Cortex, 1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally; recovery follows immediately.
There are cases where a person suddenly experiences twitching and pulling of the hands and feet, and deviation of the mouth and eyes. People consider it Stroke (Zhongfeng, typically referring to apoplexy or cerebrovascular accidents); who knows it is the sudden onset of Spasm (Jingbing)? In Stroke, the body inevitably collapses or tilts, and phlegm is vomited from the mouth. In Spasm, symptoms resemble Stroke, but the body does not collapse, and there is no phlegm-saliva discharge from the mouth or throat, nor the sound of a water chicken (phlegm rattle). Generally, Stroke has no external Wind; Wind arises internally. Spasm involves Wind entering from outside; Wind asserts its dominance without needing the assistance of internal phlegm. Thus, there are only signs of Wind causing twitching and deviation, but absolutely no sounds of surging, obstructed phlegm. If Wind arises internally, it is Fire stirring up Wind, assisted by Phlegm. Therefore, Stroke lacks external pathogens, while Spasm lacks internal pathogens. Those without external pathogens should not treat Wind solely; those without internal pathogens must treat Wind. However, treating only the exterior without treating the interior means that although external Wind may leave, internal Wind will arise. Hence, dispelling Wind requires tonifying Healthy Qi. The formula used is *Buzhong Yiqi Tang* (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction): *Renshen* (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian), *Baizhu* (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 3 qian), *Huangqi* (Astragali Radix, 3 qian), *Danggui* (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 3 qian), *Chaihu* (Bupleuri Radix, 3 qian), *Shengma* (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 4 fen), *Chenpi* (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1 qian), *Gancao* (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, twitching stops; after another dose, deviation ceases; after three doses, it does not recur.
*Buzhong Yiqi Tang* is a Qi-tonifying formula, not a Wind-dispelling agent. Why does it work easily to treat the Wind of Spasm? Because Qi deficiency makes Wind prone to entry; tonifying Qi makes Healthy Qi vigorous, sufficient to expel pathogens. *Chaihu* in the formula can originally dispel pathogens. Used in small amounts among tonifying drugs, it lifts Qi to guard Healthy Qi; used in large amounts among tonifying drugs, it augments Qi to expel pathogens. Thus, using 3 qian makes it difficult for Wind to remain. Why bother with other drugs to disperse Wind? People only know that *Renshen*, *Danggui*, *Huangqi*, and *Baizhu* are used in large quantities to tonify Healthy Qi, and absolutely do not know that using *Chaihu* in large amounts among *Renshen*, *Danggui*, *Huangqi*, and *Baizhu* is even more effective at expelling pathogens. This is why I highlight it.
This condition is also effectively treated with *Jiugong Tang*: *Renshen* (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang), *Bajitian* (Morindae Officinalis Radix), *Weirui* (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma) (each 5 qian), *Banxia* (Pinelliae Rhizoma), *Wuyao* (Linderae Fructus), *Qinjiao* (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix) (each 1 qian), *Chenpi* (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), *Fuzi* (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), *Tianma* (Gastrodiae Rhizoma) (each 5 fen). Decoct in water and take orally.
